I’m getting into running, I’m not a serious marathon runner but does anyone recommend a particular brand or style?

I started running in may and I bought Asics as my runner friends recommended them. If you've got small feet (5 or smaller) you can’t often pick up trainers in the junior section much cheaper!
I agree with what others have said for at least a month you will have lots of aches as your muscles and joints get used to running so neutral shoes are best to start with. They may well be fine forever. I’ve got Asics gel excite 7’s From the junior section of Sports Direct and they’re so comfy and cheap I’m tempted to stock up on them but I have only been running 2 and a bit months so I might change my mind!

Be careful with kids' trainers. They have much thinner soles and less cushioning than adult trainers (typically a kid with size 4 feet will weigh a lot less than an adult with size 4 feet, and also they'll be designed with the assumption that you only need a few months' use because the kid will grow out of them).

I used to have this problem with astroturf boots back 20 years ago, when women's football wasn't such a big thing so typically women had to buy kid's astro boots because no-one made women's boots. They were crap. Eventually I bought a women's pair on a trip to the states and they were an absolute revelation in terms of the cushioning and support.

Where the real value add came was hime bringing out 5 x shoes that came out narrow (I have REALLY narrow feet) and letting me try each one out on the treadmill. He said chose the pair that are most comfortable, I did exactly that, ran a marathon in them and have since bought 3 more pairs.

This . I appreciate @fellrunner85 is obviously speaking from wide-ranging knowledge and experience, but as a new runner many years ago, I found the gait testing and advice from an independent running shop invaluable. I was given tailored insoles I still use and which improve the fit and comfort of any pair of trainers, and the ones I bought at that first assessment were definitely not the premium ones, which I really didn't like the feel of.

It's not necessary to spend a lot (I run several times a week, 5-15k, and honestly, Decathlon everyday runners are cost effective and comfy. Loads of great advice here though. Good luck with your running!

I did C25K three years ago and have kept up 5k 2 or 3 times a week since and I love my Brooks (half a size up from my usual shoe size). I find them cheap compared to well known brands.

Thanks @DianasLasso I'm a five and I imagine am a similar weight to a junior at 7 and a bit stone so hopefully that won't be a problem for me I'm running between 35-40 km a week and I've had no problems but your right someone bigger might.
