Hair colouring advice ..

Hi all,

I would really appreciate some hair advice. I am 34 and have never had my hair dyed .. except for a box dye years ago. I have booked in at a salon on Saturday for a colour.

All I want is to cover the grey hair that seems to be more noticeable over lockdown - I have brown hair that I quite like the colour of so I am not looking for any big change.

I am nervous about getting my hair dyed (I don't really know why) - can you ask for a semi-perm dye or is everything at the hair dressers perm? Would I be better asking for lowlights or balayage? I want something natural that could go for 4ish months between needing redone but covers up the greys.

Also - the hairdresser hasn't mentioned a patch test - is that normal?

I have tried calling her however she does not work Thurs/Fridays - it sounds like she rents a chair in the salon from the lady I spoke to.

Any advice appreciated!

Christ, do not get it done if she’s not given you a patch test 48hrs beforehand. Cancel and book in somewhere else where they’re more professional.

All hairdressers have been advised by various professional bodies that post Covid, every Colour client must have a patch test because it’s known that if someone has had Covid, it affects their immune system and can make them much more sensitive to hair colouring products.
Because people can be asymptomatic with Covid, you patch test all colour clients regardless, just in case.

Hi I agree with @RandyLionandDirtyDog it's not good if they haven't offered a patch test. Don't let yourself be talked into a permanent colour as this will definitely need a visit to salon more than once every few months, more like every 6 weeks depending on rate your hair grows. Highlights or low lights would be best bet depending on whether you want to go lighter or not. You could also try a semi permanent or demi permanent which is in between a semi and a permanent and would fade out over time. A semi permanent doesn't contain peroxide so wouldn't damage your hair. It would only blend in grey though not cover it so if you haven't got much grey it would be fine. I let myself be talked into permanent tint and really regretted it as it requires a lot of upkeep.
