What are some great New Zealand brands I can check out?

I live in Australia and have a lot of favourite Australian brands for clothing and jewellery.

From the famous ones (Scanlan Theodore, Zimmerman, Dinosaur Designs) to the basic staples (Oroton, Trenery) to the small, ethical indie labels (Sarah and Sebastian jewellery, swoon-worthy coats from Friends With Frank, custom t-shirts from Citizen Wolf) there is so much to love!

I've heard New Zealanders wax lyrical about local brands over there, but haven't heard a lot of specific recommendations.

So tell me! What are great labels in the Land Of Jacinda?

I think NZ fashion focuses heavily on practical. It’s a very casual country, and friends & family stock up on so so many clothes in Europe when there because clothes are significantly cheaper and usually better even for simple stuff eg a men’s cotton oxford shirt in next is about £35/$70nzd inc tax / vat- same quality would be way more than that ... kids clothes especially. UK supermarket clothes for kids are amazing, kmart isn’t the same...

NZ clothes seem expensive in the UK at the moment due to the exchange rate. It was $3/£1 at one point...then $2.50/£1. Right now it is under $2/£1. In NZ, the clothes price didn't change but to anyone IN the UK or Europe, the clothes now seem very expensive. At the moment, due to the exchange rate, they are bad value.

Practical is the word. It’s all just a bit COS. Librarian or public servant. Lots of browns, mauves, purples. Hmm

Alongcameacat · 25/07/2020 19:42

Practical is the word.

Why is this I wonder? I holidayed in NZ and can’t remember the clothes at all. I spent time in Australia and thought they were years/decades behind Europe. The only clothing brands I remember were surfing brands. At the time I liked the idea that nobody cared about clothes, they appeared far happier for it.

@Alongcameacat

All birds and stylish don’t belong in the same sentence. Birkenstocks aren’t stylish either. Is this thread about well made good quality clothes or style? There is a huge difference.
I couldn't agree more. Allbirds is a fantastic wee business that has enjoyed huge success. But the shoes are definitely not stylish.

@LunaTheCat Hello! I recognise you from other threads and I think we have very similar tastes and views on fashion Smile

Thanks for the recommendations; this is EXACTLY what I was looking for and now I'm looking at some gorgeous new labels.

Apologies for starting the thread and then disappearing; I've spent a week in bed with a nasty cold (thankfully not COVID) but am on the mend now and definitely in the mood for looking at beautiful investment pieces.

Hello LavenderHills. Glad your cold is better.
We feel very fortunate in NZ with COVID - keep safe Australia.
There are some wonderful Australian brands too - I love Gorman, Elk. Unfortunately not made in Australia!
