Make up help for a 41 yr old!!

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 14/07/2020 16:20

I've realised I'm stuck in a very simple and not good enough make up routine. Bit of foundation, concealer if I need it, beige eye shadow and mascara
I need a change and to look "nice and made up" but not overdone and I don't have a lot of time and not sure enough skill for all this contouring milarky!!
Can anyone help and recommend some decent tutorials or products for a slightly chubby faced 41yr old
Especially any good eyeshadow I put mine on and it just disappears

I could do with similar OP!

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 14/07/2020 19:19

All the tutorials I've seen have a million products and are really young looks.
Maybe weve found a gap in the market?

Have a look at beauty and the boutique some really good tutorials with not a huge amount of products.

You might find this thread from a few days ago helpful OP:

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 14/07/2020 19:32

Thank you Luna I will take a look.
Thanks macavity I must have missed that one. I did try to do an admittedly quick scan of previous threads

I recommend Wayne Goss tutorials on YouTube. He gives great advice and doesn't use millions of products. I don't wear much make up but have definitely picked up a few tips from him.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 14/07/2020 20:33

Thank you Paul Robinson! . Off to check Wayne out
And I love your user name !!

Try Lisa Eldridge on YouTube too. She is a proper editorial makeup artist so sometimes does recreate complicated looks she’s down on celebs but she has lots of day time and natural looks too.

Second beauty and the boutique - the no make up make up look is great - just gives you a healthy natural glow

emma6776 · 14/07/2020 21:13

I’m 41 and I think my makeup looks pretty good. After moisturiser and suncream I use either IT Cosmetics CC cream or Estée Lauder daywear tinted moisturiser depending how much coverage I want. I use a flat foundation brush to apply. Estée Lauder doublewear concealer under eyes, Bobbi brown cream blush on cheeks, Stila eyeshadow in Kitten, a wee bit of kohl on my top lash line, eyeko mascara (the only one that doesn’t budge as I’m a contact lens wearer). I set with a glowy setting spray - using MAC at the moment but they’re all the same. If I’m looking flat I’ll pat a bit of MA strobe cream onto my cheekbones.

More eyeliner/mascara plus bronzer if I’m going out. Takes me 5 minutes to do.

If your eyeshadow is disappearing you need a descent eyeshadow base. There are lots out there. I use Mac, think its called "painterly". I think eyebrow and lash colour fades as you age and also lashes become straighter and finer so I think a good mascara that curls/lengthens/thickens is a must. Teach yourself how to tint your brows and keep them in a neat shape. Have your lashes tinted regularly.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 15/07/2020 07:32

Thank you for the tips. I'm definitely not using primer which may be why the eyeshadow disappears.
Amd don't use a setting spray so that's a good tip

I'm about your age. For a quick, natural but polished work makeup routine, I'd recommend the following:

  • A foundation that is quick and easy to apply, but long lasting. I quite like long-wearing cushion foundations (like the Yves Saint Laurent cushion ink compact) or stick foundations (Bobbi Brown does a lovely one). That way it's just swipe, blend and go - no messing about with liquids, loose powders or brushes.
  • Concealer - I always pick a long wearing one that won't crease in my fine lines. I like By Terry Touche Veloutee, which comes in a brush-style applicator so you don't need a concealer brush. Expensive but looks very natural on.
  • A cream blush - creams look very natural and you can quickly dab them on with fingers. I absolutely love the Westman Atelier blush sticks. Pick a natural shade like Petal (soft pink).
  • A lightweight powder to set everything in place. I love the Charlotte Tilbury face powder compacts, again it's a very natural finish.
  • Brow pencil helps your features look more polished and defined. I prefer ones that have a wide angular tip as they're fast and easy to apply, if they have a grooming tool at the end that also speeds things up as you can quickly brush everything into place. Chanel and Hourglass make great pencils like this.
  • Eyes - if you have problems with eyeshadows disappearing and want something quick and easy, I highly recommend eyeshadow sticks. They're so fast to apply, you don't need a brush and they'll last the day, Laura Mercier Caviar eye sticks and Bobbi Brown's version are both amazing and come in a range of neutral colours. You can either just swipe one neutral colour over the lid and blend, or you can use 2-3 colours to create a more defined eye look. Kiko also make a budget version. A bit of mascara and you're good to go.
  • Lips - I really like sheer lipsticks for work because they don't look too overdone and they're foolproof to apply (if you're in a rush it doesn't matter if they're not applied precisely). I like Chanel Rouge Coco Flash or Chantecaille Lip Chics.
violetbunny · 15/07/2020 09:43

This is the kind of eyeshadow I mean, there is a video here showing how you apply them:

www.spacenk.com/uk/en_GB/makeup/eyes/eyeshadow/caviar-stick-eye-colour-MUK200007537.html

I really like the Rose Gold shade, it's a lovely neutral pink base colour with a little shimmer that you can wear on its own. Or you can layer on other colours for more definition (Amethyst looks amazing with it, which is a soft mauvey-brown)

RudeAF · 15/07/2020 13:24

The IT Cosmetics CC cream @emma6776 mentioned is lovely and the whole range is on offer at Cult Beauty today. 20% off I think.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 17/07/2020 07:13

Thank you for taking the time to reply it's really helpful.
I will have a look at those too!
I'm wondering if I've been scared of putting on too much product (the after effects of the 90s bronze powder on pale skin) and then wonder why I dont look made up! Maybe I just need to be braver! Will experiment over the weekend
Thank you all

@@Needcoffeecoffeecoffee Don't be afraid of using a bit more product, it's all in the product and application. The aim is to look a bit more polished and well rested, but certainly for me it requires a bit of product and effort Grin

This makeup tutorial is a simple but good one for a quick everyday work appropriate routine:

Treacletoots · 17/07/2020 08:13

Karen Rene beauty on YouTube OP.

I'm similar, slightly chubby and 42 Grin

This lady specialises in tutorials for older ladies and I've learned so many tricks about eye makeup especially, although I use them probably once a yeae. Best of luck

Treacletoots · 17/07/2020 08:15

Oh and I started using The Ordinary at the start of lockdown. My skin has improved sooo much which means I can achieve a polished look with less makeup and spend less time on foundation and more on eyes.

Deathraystare · 17/07/2020 17:20

Check out Hot and Flashy on youtube plus plus Sugarpuffand stuff

GrimDamnFanjo · 17/07/2020 17:28

For eyeshadow I recommend this:
Put a base on if you need to
Put a light colour all over
Put a darker colour on the outer third of your eye and in the crease line
Blend together so there's no harsh lines
Put a light shimmery shadow just under your brow
Eyeliner on the top lid
Mascara
Brow pencil or what ever.
