Hair dye removal disaster

I have a hair appointment on Tuesday eve (hurrah) I usually have my roots done. I had to use a casting semi during lockdown as couldn't face the school gates 6 weeks ago.

DM made the comment that I still have a lot of that colour on my hair so told me I had to use a colour remover before my appointment.

Well you can all guess what happened. I'm now ginger. The salon is going to laugh at me isnt it? Im not even sure they can colour it again so soon.

Any advice appreciated Confused Blush

For a dye that's supposed to last less than six weeks and fade Castings is an absolute bugger to get rid of or dye over.

I tried to remove a Castings colour that was similar to my own (dark blonde - light brown) and it refused to budge, tried colour remover and mine went orange too and in the end my hairdresser had to put lots of hi lift (?) blonde highlights in to counteract the orange and a toner.

I still had a red tone to my hair until it grew out, sorry Sad.

What colour are you naturally, what colour was you before you put the dye over and what colour was the dye?

So many questions, sorry!

Thanks for replying. I have mid to dark brown with reddish tones. My DM and DSis have embraced the lighter/ginger look to hide greys but it does not suit me at all. I really should not listen to them for beauty advice.

It doesn't look so bad this morning but I think that's just me clutching at straws. Even my 6 year old has pulled face at it. I'm going to have to call the hairdressers and admit everything.Blush best case is they can sort it out tomorrow, worst case they cant and I'll look odd forever.

Actually, it may help the professional dye to take better. Keep deep conditioning it before your appointment, but at least you have removed the metallic salts from the box dye which is a good thing! Definitely let the salon know as they may need to do a pre-colour kind of toner, to put the pigment back in before the second colour.

I dont know why you felt you had to remove the colour if you normally get a darker colour put on it. Colour remover is more for when you want to lighten your hair

HelpMeh · 13/07/2020 07:22

I don't understand what possessed you to strip your hair colour if you were already going to the hairdressers for colour?! Stop listening to your mother.

This is what always happens with dye remover especially if you have dark hair.
The dye contains a bleaching agent as well as colour so it lifts to a ginger colour as well as deposits new colour. Then when you use dye remover it removes the colour but leaves the natural hair which has been permanently lifted/bleached.
You can fix if by going back over with non permanent dye. Sometimes if you haven't rinsed it properly for 20 + minutes it darkens again and looks a right state, not sure what the chemical process for that is but something at the back of my mind says re-oxidation.

Just popping back to say hair looks less orange in daylight. Hairdresser called me back and seemed ok with my idiocy. Obviously shes seen it all before.

She thinks my hair will be fine as it's not patchy but will know more tomorrow. It hasn't been cut since January so most of the lighter ends will be chopped off soon. If she puts new dye on tomorrow it will fade fast though.
