Adult basics for small teens

DS is 14, just under 160cm, 26 inch waist. I'm having trouble finding clothes he likes that fit well.

He doesn't care for fashion but likes basic clothes like khaki cargo shorts, straight leg blue jeans, plain or striped t-shirts in blues, greens or greys. He won't wear slogans or pictures.

Are there adult or teen brands in his size so I can buy basic clothes to fit his height and waist measurement? He's not even skinny, it just seems with adjustable waists that the waist is huge and then has to be dragged in so it is bulky and uncomfortable.

My similarly sized boys have always liked H and M.

Knittingnanny · 10/07/2020 21:53

My very very tall 10 year old grandson wears small men’s in Gap. We have an outlet nearby so very cheap

ChaoticCatling · 10/07/2020 22:09

Do the adult ranges at H&M and Gap go down to a 26 inch waist? Anyone know which brands do? DS doesn't like many of the clothes in the kids' section, they seem to follow fashion so you can't find particular basics all the time like you can in the men's.

Not sure but the ten year old doesn’t ever need knitting nanny to take anything in and he’s fairly medium build for his height

M&S and Next go up to age 16. I realise that they aren't cool but if he picks well it wont be obvious what the label is.

H&M usually do a 3 pack of plain tshirts in the boys section. If you buy his clothes have you thought about buying from the adult women's section? H and M have plain tshirts in about every colour going.

These come in size age 14+

My DD is 14, 160, 26" waist. She wears h&m boys joggers and long sleeved tops, all plain colours, because the material is thicker and softer than the girls. Size small tops in Sainsbury's mans are perfect for her (long arms, broad shoulders for a girl) and they have a huge range of plain cotton t-shirts at the moment. Their trousers in XS are 28" waist, they've lots of chinos, Chino shorts etc, and he could wear a belt (which I what I have to do!)?

haba · 11/07/2020 00:47

My DS is v narrow, and tbh I get waist adjustable trousers still for him, again mostly from H&m, some gap (chinos are in the sale atm).

ChaoticCatling · 11/07/2020 06:36

DS doesn't care about cool, he is just extremely particular. Yet I could find what he likes in M&S men's, it's all just too big.

Won't wear chinos, they have to be cargo shorts, with the leg pocket big enough for his phone. He has two pairs he will wear, both second hand boden. The size 12 will be too small soon, the size 13 is his favourite. The 13 didn't have an adjustable waist (I put some elastic in but he hardly needs it) so the waist isn't bulky. The adjustable ones don't seem to taper at the waist at all. He has another pair from Next that he won't wear because he has to pull them in so far they are uncomfortable. They are a 13, smaller sizes don't fit him elsewhere. He won't wear a belt.

Of the kid's brands, are there any that are tapered at the waist to fit a normal slim teenager so the adjustable elastic is just to adjust them slightly?Tshirts aren't a problem for fit, just finding ones he actually likes.

H&M, Gap, Jack Wills (hoodies are branded, but most of the rest isn’t. They also do an XS and the clothes last a long time), Decathlon is good for plain t shirts, joggers and fleece tops.

haba · 11/07/2020 07:05

Sorry,I read "cargo" as "Chino"!
The cargo shorts we have had have all come from gap.
I often have to put darts in waistlines but cargos are often thick material and that would make them bulky.

Bluebell79 · 11/07/2020 09:03

I found an XS men’s size tends to be smaller than age 14-15, I get a lot from next Men’s and H&M, my son mostly wears joggers.

geogteach · 11/07/2020 09:36

Primark and uniglo do narrow waist. To be honest though when my son was that age he had to start wearing a belt

  • there was no other way. We even had to get that cut and extra holes put in. The only trousers he has that he can wear without a belt are school trousers, but I had to have these made To measure, 26 waist with 36 inch leg do t exist. He currently Lives in football shorts
PassingByAndThoughtIdDropIn · 11/07/2020 09:53

I have a very similar DS and find that GAP normally do good cargo shorts. The advantage of shorts is that if you pick longer length ones you can buy in a smaller size to fit the waist and it’s not too bad if the leg is a bit shorter than originally intended. Also a fan of H&M basics and Uniqlo.

pearlypidge · 11/07/2020 09:58

Uniqlo as PPs have said.

Also we got some jeans from Zara (kids section) that weren't bad on my skinny 14yo

foxtiger · 11/07/2020 18:31

At his height he could probably still wear H&M age 14 jeans, which were quite a good fit for my skinny waisted sons at the same age. (H&M are also good for plain coloured t-shirts.) Look out for the brand Replay in TKMaxx too, they are cut for a slim figure (the teenager's sizes that still go by age).

Somebody told me, slightly too late for it to be of use to my lot, that TopMan go down to a 26" waist.

ChaoticCatling · 12/07/2020 13:45

Thanks for the ideas. I don't know why so many brands seem to make kids clothes so big on the waist when it's normal for teen boys to shoot up and fill out when they are older.

H and M have cargo shorts, to around knee length. Also try sports direct, they tend to have quite a lot of that type of thing

roundandsideways · 14/07/2020 21:05

Also h and m sometimes do elasticated belts in plain colours. My boys, tall and thin, have black ones which look very discreet

Chimchar · 14/07/2020 21:17

My ds is 13, tall and super skinny. I bought him some new swim shorts in Asda...men's Xs fitted him well. Their range is far from trendy but their basic plain T-shirt's and things are fine.
