Sizing help - Other stories, Sezane, Rouje, Comptoir des cottoniers

Thinking of updating my wardrobe with some better quality basics and looking at these stores among others but I’m so confused by sizing. The advice that the fit is “true to size” is meaningless when brands are so different!

I’m reliably an S in Zara (Including jeans) unless it’s an oversize style, when I would take an XS as I’m petite (though broad shouldered. The same for H&M and Uniqlo. 8-10 in Topshop, 6 in Whistles. M&S 8 is too big and in more obviously vanity-sized brands I’m swamped even in the smallest size.

Based on this can anyone advise me on sizing for Sezane, & Other Stories, Rouje, Comptoir des cotonniers (and feel free to recommend any other similar brands) and how they compare to other brands (especially Zara would be helpful!).

Thank you and rant over!

I’m a S is Zara and mostly an 8 but sometimes have to buy 10 trousers.
I bought a mix of fitted and floaty things from and other stories. The 36 was huge on floaty things and had to get a 34 the 36 was too tight on my hips on a fitted dress I bought and had to get the 38 x

The Sezane mohair isn't itchy at all. @Redact as a 10 get S if you want it to fit like it does on the models, if you're narrow in the shoulders, very petite or prefer a closer fit get the XS. This goes for the oversized stuff. I know they do more fitted knits too but not as much. I'd take your normal size with those, S in this case.

@botemp you say that but all wool makes me itchy even cashmere...

OhRosalind · 08/07/2020 17:53

This has been really helpful, thank you all. I have been lazily sticking to the same brands as I know they’ll fit but I fancy something new post maternity leave so I’m going to order a few Sezane bits in 34/Xs and start from there. I’ve read that their jeans come up really small - anyone tried those?

I also had a grandma with a penchant for knitting mohair sweaters, redact. I actually love the look of (tasteful) mohair and don’t have especially sensitive skin but DS is still small and gets carried a lot, it might be a bit much for him. An excuse to buy cashmere, maybe!

I recently tried a Sézane mohair knit, lovely and soft but shed absolutely everywhere!

Hey @OhRosalind I’ve some Sezane jeans and they are true to size. They are the slim leg ones. I find they usually have useful comments in the description - sometimes they’ll say go up a size/go down a size.

I agree with PPs that the fit is on the generous size but a lot of the knitwear etc is designed to be a bit slouchy rather than tight. I’m an 8 and have pieces in XS and S depending on how I want them to fit. They are lovely quality and I often get compliments on them. Have fun shopping!

Does anyone have a view on APC sizing? I am wondering how generously cut their sweatshirts are.

botemp · 10/07/2020 08:48

APC sits somewhere between Soeur and Sezane. Most true to standard French sizing IME. I do find the sleeves a bit tight, they seem to design for noodle people, with long and lanky limbs but they recognise a body has curves elsewhere so it's an odd mashup. Sometimes it works, sometimes I size up for the sake of comfort.

PersonaNonGarter · 10/07/2020 09:13

So many bad experiences with Agnes B sizing - definitely for noodle people.
