Facial hair - Please HELP :(

OldLace · 06/07/2020 20:45

I started getting some facial hair in my early 30's.
then I had IVF and got a LOT more.
I live in the middle of nowhere and am a carer for my 2 kids with ASD.
So, no time and money to fix it.
So, I shave.
Every morning in the shower.
But by teatime it shows again.

What can I do to get rid of it for good?
I don't have much money / time but it gets me down SO much.
I am not overweight and don't have PCOS but it is getting worse.
I'm 52 not yet menopausal (that I'm aware of)
My natural hair colour is medium brown and is about 50% grey.
On my chin it is mostly dark but some random ginger hairs.
I don't have the time or money to travel to the nearest city for treatment (I'm 50 miles from one) but I can't shave forever.

HELP!!!

Thanks @jewel1968 - that is great that is working for you :-) I suppose I mean people who maybe don't quite qualify for NHS help, or aren't taken seriously, and for whom laser would not be an issue (I know everything has its risks - and obv GPs have to be extremely risk-averse). Just to know there is an alternative for people, if safe for them, if they are not getting anywhere with other measures.

Facial wax strips...they do them in the pound shop near me

jewel1968 · 07/07/2020 22:59

My GP sat with me and went through the NICE guidance and followed it. I think I may have been a little pushy but not overly. Might be worth reading this ...

@PartyCat - agree

PartyCat · 07/07/2020 23:08

Thanks @jewel1968 - I think that link could be very useful for people, so they know what is available for them and can go to their GP armed with that information :-)

Does anybody know if IPL works on auburn hair?

Cuddling57 · 07/07/2020 23:21

If you haven't got loads of money I'd say go for the lumea.
I've had lazer and it was great but still not 100% and it hurt (bikini line).
Also it's so much money for one area, doesn't get rid of it all and they don't guarantee that either. Then at the end they say you can have x amount of extra sessions for £££!
At least with a lumea you can do loads of different areas for a little bit cheaper.

Thanks for that link jewel1986 I'm definitely going to speak to my GP again. I hate it so much and try and avoid being in bright light as it's so noticeable. I hate being touched on my face too.

I've been having professional laser regularly for the last 3 years, but it hasn't been amazing. Hair growth is softer but still there, but I do have some very fair, ginge and probably some grey hair. So I don't know if the Lumea would work for me. But it does have a 100 day money back guarantee so if you did decide to buy one OldLace at least you could get your money back if it didn't work.

I was prescribed Vaniqa a couple of years ago and it works on my top lip, not on my chin. I've just looked at my local CCG list of approved drugs and it's no longer allowed. Guess I'll have to start shaving my moustache too.

whatswithtodaytoday · 08/07/2020 00:09

Definitely Philips Lumea. I bought one at the start of lockdown, when I realised I was unlikely to see my threading lady for some time. My tache - which I used to get threaded every two weeks - is now almost gone. I get a few hairs sprouting every few days, but they're easily shaved in the shower until the next zapping.

K1ran · 08/07/2020 00:15

I've had thick dark hair on fair skin since i was a child. I have had laser treatment and the last time I needed a session was 4 years ago. So definitely laser treatment,.if you can. In the short term, rather than shaving try waxing or threading. This pulls the hair out from the root so it can last about a week before you notice regrowth. The only downside of waxing or threading is you may notice some on growth if you do it for too long. But if you decide to go for the laser, that will get rid of any ingrowth.

CaptainCaveMum · 08/07/2020 00:21

I was recommended the Tria 4x www.triabeauty.co.uk/home-laser-hair-removal
Rather than a Lumea - although I know pps swear by them
It’s brilliant and yes you do shave any hairs that reappear but it’s miraculous Grin

wishing3 · 08/07/2020 00:23

Another one to say Phillips Lumea. X

Skysblue · 03/03/2021 22:13

I know this is an old thread but for anyone searching... Laser hair removal should NOT be used if you have facial hair growth caused by a hormonal inbalance (eg PCOS, perimenopause, IVF-triggered hirtuism etc), . The laser treatment can actually increase the hair growth, google it. Electrolysis I hear is ok but not laser.

If your hormones are fine than laser might be ok for you.
