Epilators as alternative to waxing?

For obvious reasons it's not very easy to get a wax anymore and even in normal times i struggle to find the time to get to a salon... so have been wondering about trying an epilator. Is this a good alternative? I've heard it can be painful but so is waxing & to be honest I think I would put up with the pain for convenience if it worked just as well. If so any particular one you would recommend? I've seen one advertised for beginners to get you used to the pain!

Other than that anything else I've not thought of? I have thick hair so shaving makes it all worse and have to do it daily & I really don't like removal creams. I've tried home waxing but get in a bit of a mess & don't find it that effective. For legs, underarms and bikini line...

Braun Silk Epil 9.
I can use it anywhere except right between the legs where I end up using a razor. Obviously it's slower than waxing but the cost is a one off and it's less messy. You still have to wait for the hair to grow a bit though before you can use it again.
There's pros and cons of all the methods.
If you've waxed I wouldn't worry about getting a special beginner model, the 9 is the best on the market though the previous model which I have, the 7, is much of a michness. Using it under water will soften the sting a bit the first time you use it but if you're used to wax I doubt it would bother you.

Yes! I am a convert from waxing to epilating. It's painful at first but you soon get used to it (although I am too much of a wimp to use it on my bikini line - I stick to cream there). Mine is a Braun too. Quite expensive but you save money in the long run rather than paying for a wax each time.

I have a Braun too - although not the 9, it’s a wet and dry model. I use a slick of cheapy hair conditioner in the bath to make it sting a bit less. I wash the epilating head thoroughly and sterilise after use in Milton and since I’ve started doing that I’ve not had a problem with ingrown hairs. Nothing beats a good shave so if I‘m going out I’ll run over my legs with a razor too.

Give it a day after epilating as my legs look a bit speckled afterwardsGrin

It's OK. I find I get more ingrowing hairs/ spots than after waxing and it's not as good for fine hairs, which I have a lot of after 30 years of waxing, so it depends how "hairless" you want to be but far better than shaving.

Very painful to begin with but you do get used to it, I can even do my bikini line now!

Thanks ladies - think I might give it a go. Hating how hairy I've become in lockdown! Have the Braun 9 in my amazon shopping basket while I think about it - just need to actually buy it!
