DD's Knotty Hair!

Any tips for dealing with hair tangles?? We use conditioner, leave in conditioner and then detangkinh spray, but, every morning and every time I take a hair band out, I’ve got to deal with these bloody knots! They are the bane of my life; I honestly think having a horse is less upkeep...

Get a satin pillow case and do you do 2 plaits? Thats better than one.
Use intensive masks for dry hair as conditionner and leave 3 to 5 mins.
I found detanglebsprays rubbish.
Get a tangle teaser with a handle and finger separate the tangles/hair into sections. Put something on tele for distraction and both of you should sit comfortably. Massage the scalp if you pulled too much and caused pain to sootge it.
I sleep with a high coilee bun or two plaits and it helps with less tangles. Obviously brush from down to top. Making sure you fist the hair higher up so that it doesnt tug at the scalp. One hand brushes one hand hold the section of hair so scalp isnt yanked.

A tangle teaser type brush?

I think keeping it shorter will help, ask your stylist whether layers could work too, once reopening has happened.

ChinWhiskers · 02/07/2020 13:48

Sooth

Coiled bun

Ugh edit button please!

FaintlyMacabre · 02/07/2020 13:48

I sympathise! My DDs hair is similar and I’ve spent hours getting tangles out, only for it to knot up again within hours.
What’s currently working for us is using solid shampoo (from the Friendly Soap Company) and a cider vinegar rinse. No conditioner or detangling spray at all. These were seeming to build up in her hair and make it stickier over time, making the tangles worse.
Also I now brush her hair with a pure bristle Mason Pearson brush. They’re very expensive but I was lucky enough to be given one as a child. However it’s in perfect condition 30 years later so might be a good investment!

We do use a tangle teaser. I'll see if one with a handle makes a difference. She doesn't want it any shorter, but we'll see!

I think satin pillow case might be the next step.

What doesn't help is that she's at her DF's house half the week, and the man cannot plait (or evening thoroughly brush) for toffee

My hair is similar. I always comb my hair in the shower while the conditioner is on. I like Aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner, it works wonders. When my hair is dry I struggle to get a comb through it. I use a soft bristle brush and then detangle any remaining knots with a steel comb (much better than a plastic comb, especially if you choose one with widely spaced circular teeth).

ChinWhiskers · 02/07/2020 13:59

The handle suggestion on the tangle teaser because i found it gave better hold when im combing my dds hair. If you have no issue with the model that just fits your palm then dont bother. For me the tangle teaser used to fly off as im brushing or slip off, the handle gave me better control but the 'bristle' part is the same with or without handle. For me more control and comfort meant im more patient and deliberate with the knots.

Another vote for a satin pillow case and two plaits at night. I also recommend Avon’s hair oil for the tangle moments in the pic. God send for my hair!

How old is she? At some point she has to take some responsibility for her hair if she wants to keep it this length. It shouldn’t be solely your job (and grrrr at her father’s lack of care).

DPotter · 02/07/2020 14:13

I have knotty thick hair. Would drive my Mum made trying to brush it. My suggestions...

Aussie hair conditioner and lots of it
tangle teazer
plaits during the day.
If your DD and her father can't plait - try a ponytail with extra bands down the full length, so one at the top, one at the bottom and 2 -3 spaced out in the middle.
depending on her age - push it back to her. 10 yrs+ if she wants long hair, she learns to plait or she has it cut to shoulder length.
I've found it easier to plait french style on myself then ponytail way.

Good luck

@ChinWhiskers haha - YES! Every day the bloody thing gets flung about the room. Glad it's not just me!

@DPotter she's 7. Good idea about the bobbles

AriettyHomily · 02/07/2020 15:22

We find a Wet Brush better than the tangle teazer which seemed to brush the top but not all the way through.

QueenCT · 02/07/2020 15:24

Any mane and tail conditioner? Grin actually not joking, it works well!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/07/2020 15:24

Use these bobbles for ponytails.

Gosh this picture is uncanny, it could literally be a picture of my DD(7) and her hair!

We use a big paddle brush with we found works better than a tangle teaser and then as others say apart from shampoo, conditioner and tangle spray, we find plaits for bed make an enormous difference. I feel your pain though!

SuperEkstra · 02/07/2020 15:33

@QueenCT M&T detangling spray in use in this pic!

@AriettyHomily oh great shout - yes, the TT does just seem to brush the top
Layer!

I've just ordered some scrunchies, see if they will help

I have this in two scents, the original red and the blue and white lotus one. It's amazing for detangling!

The length of your dds hair might also be a contributing factor. I know whenever I've let my dds grow theirs out, once it gets past a certain length the ends just go fluffy and scraggy and it will tangle up no matter what you do.
