What do you wear if you are very short waisted?

HotSince82 · 02/07/2020 13:07

I am extremely short waisted, its as if my torso is missing a few sections so the area from pubic bone to navel is short and then my boons seem to be more or less directly umderneath my collar bone. I also have E cups which doesn't help.
My inside leg is 36" so I am just wildly out of proportion. I am slim, a 10-12 at a whisker under 5'9 but my upper body seems so dumpy due to a combination of boobs and lack of space. I have back fat where my waist meets my hips, presumably because of the lack of space and being slim everywhere else. All tops are also too long from shoulder to boobs so frequently I need to get them altered or my boobs would be on show.

I'm fed up of my crap proportions and dumpy looking torso, especially when seated.

When I was a size 6/8 I didn't have this issue but I was also underweight and stressed out.

Anybody with a similar shape to advise me on what to wear/buy/ do to make myself look a bit better?

TIA

Exercise and tone up

HotSince82 · 02/07/2020 15:36

Any tips on how to tone my lower back specifically?
I already exercise but this stubborn area just persists.

Also if anybody has any tips on dressing for a short waist I would be very grateful.

I’m sure I read a helpful guide on this blog but not sure which article it was:

Have you thought about finding/enlisting a local seamstress who can help you to alter clothes to fit your proportions? Or who can actually make you clothes?

Nighttimefreedom · 02/07/2020 18:34

How do you get on with tops from petite ranges?
Or are your arms too long for that?

Shannith · 02/07/2020 18:42

I'm the same. Longish legs, short waist area and no defined waist at all.

High waisted trousers are often hipster on me. I mostly just run with it - it's not the worst niggle to have. A french belt tuck thingy (google it) is perfect for people like us because you can create a waist wherever you like.

Back fat, bear with me here... if you are slim all over then toning up is the best thing.

I suspect you could do all sorts of painful twisting and crunching but I've had surprising side effects from doing yoga with Adrienne for equestrians.

I ride, but don't let that put you off. I could barely do half of it when I started a few months ago but I do it 4-5 times a week (it's 30 mins) and my lower back is now weirdly strong and a bit toned.

It's so good if you have tight hips (I didn't even know I had) too and it tones your stomach without a crunch in sight. Well there's core work but it's a slow burn and if you do it loads it doesn't feel like hard work.

Shannith · 02/07/2020 18:43

And come on...tall, slim, long legs - enjoy it!

grafft · 02/07/2020 19:05

I'm very similar so can't do the tshirt & flary skirt thing. I need tops to hit my hips. Dresses I don't tend to have a problem with, thinking about it I hardly ever wear skirts.

grafft · 02/07/2020 19:08

Oh & avoid drop waists, even at my smallest they look horrendous.

MillyMollyMandy36 · 02/07/2020 19:20

I’m 5’2 , very short waisted and size 14 ..over time I’ve learned

  1. Always Always wear tops outside of bottoms, never tucked in
  2. Petite tops and standard Bottoms
  3. Decent bra to lift you up and maximise bra to waist space
  4. M&S do vest type tops in the lingerie section that have a slightly higher neck so you don’t expose yourself. I wear these under loads of things or under a smart cardigan for work (when I wasn’t wfh)
  5. I’m short so it maybe different for someone who’s taller, but I often find a below the knee skirt makes me look more balanced
  6. Don’t cut yourself in half visually with a belt.

I’m sure there are more so I’ll check my Gok Wan book and watch with interest.

WrinklesShminkles · 02/07/2020 19:56

If the OP has long legs then she almost certainly also has long arms so petite tops are probably no good. I have this shape (although fatter) and hate it. I just look like a potato on stilts. My tips are: long tops to balance your proportions worn with slimline bottoms. Forget about trying for a waist, let people assume you have one under a looser top. Dresses that skim the top half and flare out (skater?) or are a bit A-line are best for me.

peaceanddove · 02/07/2020 20:04

I'm just the same. 5ft 7" with a 33 inside leg, flat bum, no hips and all my weight carried on my boobs and belly. Classic Apple shape. Hush dresses in their Ivy or Tara styles are very flattering, and Cos cocoon dresses. I can't do a French tuck because it just emphasises how rounded my belly and torso are Sad

stealthbanana · 02/07/2020 20:24

I also have this spongebob squarepants shape. It wasn’t a problem to dress when I was very thin but in my still slightly overweight (for me - am still a 10) phase post kids it’s a nightmare.

Unlike a PP I find a drop waist is almost always my friend. Long line tops. Longer line blazers. An a line mini with an oversized jumper over the top. Basically any kind of clothing that doesn’t fall or nip in at the waist

Kittywampus · 02/07/2020 20:33

I have the same body shape but I'm short. I looked absolutely huge when I was pregnant because there was no space for a baby except for stuck out at the front Grin

I tend to wear a lot of skinny jeans with tunic tops, long loose tops which cover my waist area, A line denim or corduroy skirts, and A line dresses.

Rocket1982 · 02/07/2020 21:13

Long legs and short body here, especially short above the waist. I wear 'shell' tops, boxy tops or shift tops (all basically similar) over slim trousers or jeans or a slightly more fitted top with hipster flared trousers and probably a jacket or cardigan. Most skirts looks quite rubbish but OK if on the hip. I attempted to get a skirt flared at the waist recently and it looked bad. Skater dresses, jumper dresses, shift dresses, shirt dresses and some wrap dresses can work. Any even lowish v-neck or scoop neckline is a problem, especially if it stretches through the day and by the end of the day my bra is visible.

grafft · 02/07/2020 22:11

Yes Cos dresses are good hide the squareness & showcase the legs.

Kittywampus · 02/07/2020 23:24

I usually have to wear a vest top under anything with a v neck so it doesn't look indecent. I've got a lovely silk slip for under dresses which serves the same purpose and also smoothes out my wobbly belly a bit.

Tatapie · 03/07/2020 06:32

You've got to balance your proportions out: Google the 1/3 2/3 dressing rule.
You can draw the eye to the right break point with top length or a belt or a jacket over the top.

Another tip : After years of not tucking in I now do and wear a belt the same colour as the top , this visually lengthens the torso.

You've got great legs, get them out! Shift dresses that finish around the knee should look good.

Get a soft v neck to accommodate your boobs and go for soft fabrics that skim rather than cling. Wrap dresses ( tie at the side) should work but the gaping can be a pain.

Tatapie · 03/07/2020 06:35

Jeans I wear a mud ride straight leg that balance out my chunkier top.
