I’m in Scotland, so hairdressers can open from the 15th. Mine have posted on Instagram that they will be ringing people who missed appointments from next week, which is amazing news! There seems to be a lot of changes - what are yours doing?

Masks for customers, PPE (not sure what) for staff
Wait outside until you are called
Looks like the stylist does everything - what’s happened to the juniors?
Go on your own - which I know most people do, but what about kids’ haircuts?
Extended opening hours to accommodate fewer people in at once
Screens/spaced out workstations
Price hike
No tea/coffee/mags
Card payment only, and a £50 booking deposit

The last one bothers me a bit - I usually book two appointment in advance, and go every five weeks. I can’t afford to pay £150 in a oner. (Usually you paid on the day of your appointment unless you booked online, which had a £10 deposit.)

I'm in England, hairdresser will be opening a week today and has laid out changes on Instagram:

Masks for customers, PPE (not sure what) for staff same, you can either bring your own mask or buy one for £1. Hairdressers wearing masks and a face shield.

Wait outside until you are called same, this makes sense to limit amount of people in the building

Looks like the stylist does everything - what’s happened to the juniors? same, guessing this is probably national policy to avoid customers getting up close to different people.

Go on your own - which I know most people do, but what about kids’ haircuts? same, unless your kid is having a haircut too.

Extended opening hours to accommodate fewer people in at once same, open 9am - 9pm

Screens/spaced out workstations same, they have to stick to social distancing guidelines in order to be allowed to open

Price hike same, they have to cover the costs of their PPE and having less clients at one time compared to what they usually would.

No tea/coffee/mags same, makes sense for cross contamination. I will miss my post teapot though!

Card payment only, and a £50 booking deposit. same, think a lot of places are avoiding cash now as the virus can live on it apparently. They introduced the booking deposit system before covid because of a lot of no shows. It's only a small salon anyway so 1 or 2 no shows a day probably makes a big difference to their takings

In addition, my hairdresser has asked people not bring bags or coats with you if possible, you have to wash your hands on arrival and have to provide contact details for potential contact tracing.

Thanks popc0rn I think thr changes make sense, I was just curious if it was across the board. Mine have also asked that you limit personal belongings, and no cloakroom.

I go to a big Aveda salon, so a no-show would lose ££, and I completely understand not taking cash. I wonder what would happen if you had to cancel/reschedule due to illness, would that £50 just be gone? I had to reschedule a couple of years ago due to flu but did give a few days notice and it was fine - I have been going there about 12 years and only ever that one cancellation.

Mine is doing similar rules but it means I can't go! I can't wear a mask. I can't see them relaxing the rules any time soon so looks like i'm giving up and going grey.

Similar. They are starting with 7 day opening (probably until the backlog is cleared). One customer per hairdresser at a time, there are five chairs but quite well spaced already so I think they will all be able to work at the same time and of course they all face to the wall.

Customer will be brought in by the hairdresser, reception desk won’t be in use.

Haven’t discussed payment changes yet (hairdresser is also a friend) but I’m slightly concerned as I usually sit for an hour with my colour on while they cut someone else’s hair - obviously that can’t happen. I was going to give them extra anyway as they haven’t had any income during the lockdown but I’d better wait & see what they want to charge first!

It is a bit of a backwater and most of the staff weren’t full time before lockdown - I’m not sure they even have a card machine!

Astrabees · 29/06/2020 13:30

I'll miss the magazines. I suppose I'll have to take a book with me for the time my colour is waiting to take.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/06/2020 21:26

Oh, that is annoying, flump. Could you manage one of those visor things instead?

mrsfezziwig I don’t get colour, but that’s what they did at my place too. I think prices are going to be sky-high for customers who get colour, because they are charging per service, so a person would have to pay for colour plus cut as two fees.

astra I think I will miss chatting with my hairdresser if we are both wearing masks!
