Suddenly greasy hair- help!

I don't know why but a little while after we went into lockdown I noticed that my hair was suddenly really greasy. I have never had this problem before, if anything my hair has always tended towards dryness! I used to get away with washing it 3 times a week but now all of a sudden I wash it and it's noticeably greasy after just a day! What's going on?? I haven't used anything different on it, my diet hasn't changed, I can't think what's causing it.

I desperately need advice as to how the hell I can get rid of the grease as it looks so awful it's really making me self-conscious. I'm back at work and need to look presentable so I have no choice but to wash it every day which is a pain as between a demanding job and two small children I'm always pushed for time as it is!
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

It could just be a build up of products. Get a good clarifying shampoo.

I've never really used products aside from a bit of heat protection spray though and I've even stopped using that now just in case that was somehow at fault... although seems unlikely. Are you able to recommend a good clarifying shampoo? I'm a bit clueless about this stuff Blush

I used a purelogy one that I find good.

Thank you, I'll try that. I am willing to try anything at this point!

Have you changed your birth control.

Fluffy I came off the pill a few months ago as DH had a vasectomy. I've never had this when I've stopped taking it before though.

This will be it. Certain pills have higher estrogen than others which causes hair to be less greasy. Your progesterone levels are probably rising now causing greasy hair etc. Any change in hormones or diet can take a few months to be reflected in your hair so this is very likely the culprit. Excess sebum production is usually always due to hormones (hence why the most effective acne treatments reduce levels of testosterone).

Yep, I agree with alexis.

Thank you both, that makes sense that it would be hormonal as my skin has also been a bit oily. Thankfully not as bad as my hair though! So I'm guessing if it's hormonal there's nothing I can do to sort it? Sad

Agree this is likely hormonal. Your oestrogen levels have suddenly nose dived and women often suffer with greasy hair and acne after coming off the pill. There are things you can do though.

Change your shampoo until it calms down and buy some dry shampoo.

You need clear shampoos for greasy hair; Herbal Essences Micellar Water shampoo is good. Use a clarifying shampoo (Vosene anti dandruff shampoo is excellent for stripping out oils and any build up from your usual shampoo/conditioner ) once a week as well for a deep clean.

Comb a little conditioner through the ends when wet, don't put conditioner near your roots. Blast your scalp with cold water after rinsing.

My hair can get greasy after a day and the above helps. After washing and drying my hair I use a small amount of dry shampoo on the roots straight away. It prevents the grease from your scalp transferring to your hair during the day.. a tip I learned on here.

Hope some of that helps.

If you start getting a sensitive scalp, (especially hot, rashy or pimply) watch out for signs of seborrheic dermatitis. It often foretells alopoecia with peri/menopause. Keep on top of nutrition and hydration. If you have concerns, go straight to GP and ask for a full blood work up and demand a referral to a dermatologist who specializes in scalp disorders. (Exaggerate your symptoms if you need to!)

I’ve just ordered a shampoo brush from lee stafford, it’s not here yet but I’m hoping it will leave me with that same feeling as when hairdressers wash your hair.
