Mid 40s and I want a jumpsuit - am I mad?

I have an urge for one that has nearly overcome me tonight. Was even scoping out one for 250 quid on Me & Em.

Am I mad? DH who is lovely and kind and quite good at choosing me nice clothes eg for Christmas said god no when I said shall I get one. But I still think I want one.

I am size 12 and 5ft 6. Slim but no waist so I need one with some sort of waist- belt or elasticated or something. Was thinking maybe in dark denim.

Anyone got any suggestions to tempt me away from remortgaging for the Me & Em one?

Or would I look too try hard/Top Gun not in a good way?

@zinnia
Spot on about choosing style that suits. Cap sleeve fussy top half for me and cropped tapered trousers works on a short legged hobbit like myself wide legged varieties look atrocious on me

Devlesko · 28/06/2020 14:03

I didn't know clothes were age restricted.
If it looks good on you wear it.
I'm 53 and wear playsuits because they suit me better than shorts and t shirts.
Jumpsuits didn't look good at any age as I have dinky legs.

I'm mid forties and a size 12-14. I have four - one from Baukjen, one from Popsy and two cheapy ones from Tesco. You just have to pick a style that suit you and there's loads of choice out there. Phase Eight have a huge sale on at the moment as do John Lewis, worth having a look at those.

I love jumpsuits. I got a lovely one from TK Max last year and it had a nice chiffon top part so it looked like a blouse and trousers rather than a jumpsuit.

Just be very careful with them when you need to go to the loo!

Growingboys · 28/06/2020 21:50

So many replies! Gonna read them all now as I still want a jumpsuit.

Thank you!

There are some great ones at Sweaty Betty right now 👍🏻

@GemmeFatale

Late 30’s and the only reason I’m not living I’m my playsuit right now is I can’t breastfeed In it.
I bought one from Sainsbury's that had a zip which I could breast feed in. Smile
IdblowJonSnow · 28/06/2020 22:43

Yanbu! But I might steer clear of denim - could end up looking like a children's tv presenter.
Otherwise go for it! Although if you're a frequent loo goer they can be a pita.

I'm 47 and have a few jumpsuits. My latest is Somerset by Alice Temperley and has an elasticated waist and wide legs. Looks lovely

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 28/06/2020 22:50

@CMOTDibbler Same. I'm 46 and was extremely comfortable in it yesterday when it was v. hot here. DD (15) says I look good in it so it must be true, she's usually v. critical of my clothing choices. Grin

The elasticated waist is also great if you want to eat alot (as I did).

I think they're so mainstream now, not trendy or anything. But I love them, I'm a late adapter. Size 14, 5'6 and problem tummy area, but when I get one that I feel is flattering/ comfy/nice, I feel great. I'm 40.

You sound a lot like me in size and shape.

I’ve been thinking of getting a jumpsuit but just can’t decide on a style. I don’t think I’ve worn one since I was about 5!

Budget is small!

Same as Muchtoomuch you also sound similar shape & size to me & I find it really hard to find flattering jumpsuits - any recommendations ReturnOfTheMC?

ReturnOfTheMc · 29/06/2020 23:59

I have slim leg ones but I like cropped culotte leg ones best, which is strange because I hate wide leg trousers on me/ feel they're too tricky to tuck things into. I would never wear cropped culotte trousers. I wear jumpsuits with heels or wedges 90% of the time - very occasionally flats. Because of my the tummy insecurity I like a drapey loose fabric belt or tie to hang down. I can't just have nothing and what I feel is an expanse of tummy! I feel that if I find a jump suit I feel comfortable in, it gives off more confidence than I necessarily have. Also as previous posters have said, it's one and done.

I have this in black www.asos.com/prd/12211562?acquisitionsource=com.google.android.apps.docs

Asos have lots actually. Dorothy Perkins too but some brands aren't long enough in the tummy for me. The first few I tried weren't and I almost gave up.

Phase Eight Victoriana might be worth a look.
New Look but online is dreadful for sizes / the best ones sell out.
I managed to get this in polka dot plisse - so comfy, doesn't crease, this is the silhouette I favour.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 30/06/2020 21:42

@ReturnOfTheMc. I would never have considered either of those but it looks as if plenty of others have!

I hardly ever buy clothes without trying them on first so I’m not sure I’ll take the plunge just yet. You have given me hope though so thank you 👍🏻

Dontsayyouloveme · 30/06/2020 21:53

I’m 48 and I’ve just brought this one for a night out! It is soooo comfy and only £28!!

That's gorgeous Don'tsayyouloveme and I imagine it's flattering. I think jumpsuits have a glam factor.

I wonder if I can use my jumpsuit joy as a springboard to boiler suits for Autumn/Winter.

Dontsayyouloveme · 30/06/2020 22:50

ReturnOfTheMc isn’t it?! It’s very flattering even on an apple shape like me. The material is gorgeous and has slight stretch in it too!!! 😍😍😍

I’ve just been frantically looking for more now since this thread! 😂
