Has anyone dyed their hair burgundy?

I have naturally mousey hair but have had it highlighted for thirty years. I briefly went dark last year and liked it but didn’t keep it for long. Now during lockdown the blonde has been growing out and I have long dark roots.

I was thinking of a complete change and maybe dyeing it dark burgundy (red wouldn’t suit me.)

Has anyone got a similar colour? Does it suit you? Would I have to change clothes/make up? What style do you wear it in?

I do suit blonde hair so not even sure I will like it! Just fancy a change during lockdown as not going anywhere much and probably won’t get to a hairdresser until September.

I done mine years ago but decided I'm better blonde. those reddish purple colours are quite hard to get out of the hair if you don't like it so maybe try a semi permanent and see how you feel about it first

Sooobooored · 27/06/2020 18:49

Good point. I did look at the Garnier one but that was permanent

I have to say, I think reddy burgundy colours can look quite purplish and very box dye-y sometimes. I think let the blonde grow out and work your new darker roots, and then when you can get to a hairdresser as for baby lights and balayage so you can have a soft grown out blonde look, it always looks nice

Tried it once. Until more than one friend told me that it made me look like an ageing goth. Goodbye burgundy hair!

Neverendingweeds · 27/06/2020 18:55

Just to warn you, those reddish purple colours are really hard to get rid of!!

I recently dyed my hair violet, but as my hair is a medium/dark brown it came out plum colour. I discovered that the colour also fades really quickly and is a total pain for roots!

I attempted to dye over it with a brown but the reddish tinge still appeared - I ended up having to colour b4 my hair - which came out what can only be called strawberry blonde (even darker colours can contain peroxide it seems) then go over with the brown which seems to have done the trick.

I’m glad I asked now!

Try it out via the garnier app is my advice. It looks horrific on me Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/06/2020 19:51

I did a couple of years ago ( thankfully semi-permenant) .
The dye was Mahogany
My grey hairs were pink

It didn't wash out as hoped it would and I managed to shift it with Vit C+dandrufff shampoo .

I did once...the colour looked very, very flat. Not long after I did I saw umpteen women walking around with similar and it looked awful...stained scalp etc. Was a bugger to get the colour out of me hair afterwards

MikeUniformMike · 28/06/2020 20:13

I tried it years ago, and I think it was the Castings semi permanent one. The colour lasted well and faded away slowly.

I would recommend it because if it doesn't suit you, it will be gone in a few weeks,

Sooobooored · 28/06/2020 20:14

I tried the Garnier app and it looks ok, better than the dark brown or reddish toned colours. The Davina colour looked hideous on me.

Forgot to say. It was mahogany not burgundy.

If it wasn't Castings, which I'm fairly sure it was, it would have been Nice & Easy, but it was not the permanent one. The colour was too dark for me and it did wash out, but not as quickly as lighter colours.

Hoppinggreen · 28/06/2020 20:21

I used chocolate cherry - can’t remember who by, maybe Casting?
I really like it

Suzie6789 · 28/06/2020 20:22

I have done, but naturally have very dark hair. I’m not sure I would if you are fair. I needed a lot of make up to balance the strong colour so I wouldn’t consider it during lockdown.
It’s been very hard to get rid of the purpley tinge I’ve had to colourb4 it twice as the Mid to the ends ends were very dark, and they still aren’t quite right.

flamingnora86 · 28/06/2020 20:23

On blonde highlights you might have strands of pink. I actually loved it but dyed over it with brown in the end Smile

AriettyHomily · 28/06/2020 21:11

Yep, I used a crazy colour one at the beginning of lockdown, dark hair, there is still some colour left now. For £4 I was pleasantly surprised by it. We just did it as a bit of fun but I think I'll do it again.

DysonFury · 29/06/2020 20:11

Sorry but this colour looks awful on anyone.

Deathraystare · 30/06/2020 09:32

I used to until I realised a 'blue red' would not suit my warm colouring. I then went onto much reddier reds (as near scarlet I could get) but as I am greying , it always shows up the grey pretty quick so now I go for a medium golden brown. Not as exciting I agree but ah well...

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 30/06/2020 09:33

Yes, it's extremely difficult to get rid of. I wouldn't advise it.

MoltonSilver · 30/06/2020 10:05

I did on it on a whim once having had highlights for a few years. I regretted it. Suddenly all my clothes looked wrong with my hair. It's a very hard colour to work with. A lot of the colours in my wardrobe looked terrible with it.

Sooobooored · 30/06/2020 10:11

I’ve been put off now!

I’m going to leave my hair till September and see where I am with the roots and decide whether to go all over brown or back to blonde.
