Curly hair style inspiration

Hi

I have had the same hairstyle for 30 years - eek! it's a shoulder length slightly layered style with a side parting.

I'm desperate for a change now my hair has grown longer in lockdown. Any ideas? I understand a fringe does not work with curly hair? I don't think I'd suit very short hair.
Thanks.

Your hair is lovely. I would keep the curls and you now have the option of longer or shorter. I have curly hair and have a fringe I toyed with growing it out but it always annoys me.

runner2 · 25/06/2020 16:52

We could be twins! My hair is just like yours, just a couple of shades lighter in colour, and I too have had the same style for 30 years. For the first time in my life , during lockdown I've embraced the fact that it's not been a problem to maintain, and I'm not minding it being longer. It's a challenge keeping it conditioned - especially in this heatwave - but other than that it's fine: I often just tie it back anyway. I had a shortish bob for a few years in my late teens but it was quite high-maintenance and I'd never go back to short. Smile

PS sorry - that was no help to you at all lol Smile

birdwatching · 25/06/2020 17:11

curly here - a fringe can look pretty ace with curls (I have one Grin). Just Google pics of curls and fringe or curls and bangs.

I know what you mean with the hairstyles for decades. I am the same. the only variation I have is fringe/no fringe and a few inches shorter or longer.

I think I would go for a fringe. lots of videos on YouTube how to do it yourself (I don't let hairdressers touch my curls).

toomanyhobbies · 25/06/2020 17:35

I real want to start embracing my curls and I wondered if you tell me what you all use and your routines.

birdwatching · 25/06/2020 17:51

too, I think what works for one doesn't work for another. Too many variables - curl type/pattern, high/low prorocity, fine curls, thick curls...

I use sulphate free shampoos, a silicone free conditioner and the pink boots curl cream and the denman brush for styling.

took a few years to get it right. shed loads of trial and error (helpful, I know Wink).

Thanks all.

I'm off to do some googling. Thanks for the ideas and encouragement.

I use soulandsoap vegan shampoo bars which are fab, followed by a 100% natural conditioner, followed by Phyo curl legend leave in. I wash every other day and conditioner and style in between.

Links to products below. My curls are generally quite ringletty now if I towel dry my hair very gently and encourage them to form.

I'm a convert to co-wash conditioners, have abandoned shampoo altogether. Palmers did a brilliant one, cheap too, but it appears to have been discontinued, so now I'm on my last bottle I'm on the hunt for a replacement.

Hi OP,

I would absolutely love to have your hair!
I have afro hair, very tight coiled curls when I add hair product otherwise it is a big frizzy nest! BTW I love my heritage I've just had a life long battle with my hair, it never ever looks how I want it to. I end up tying it back all the time.
Anyway OP, as suggested google curly hair styles or curly hair with fringe and it comes up with loads of ideas.
I also think adding colour highlights looks great on curly hair, it seems to catch the light really well and adds more depth. Maybe some caramel type shades?
I'm determined to have a big hair change as soon as I can get to a hair dresser, I want to feel like a new woman!
I would suggest you do lots of research, see what style you like and take the pic to the hairdresser. Alternatively your hair looks great as it is!

As an aside do you find the shampoo & conditioner bars moisturising enough? The only one I've tried was like using a bottle of washing up liquid on my hair!

Aurea · 25/06/2020 18:41

Thanks Hotmess

Nice to hear from another curly.

These shampoo bars are really good and my hair feels moisturised after using - not enough to skip conditioning though but nearly. I didn't get on with the same brand of conditioner bar though.

I recommend the vegan ones for curly hair as it seems to work better with curls for this brand.

Think I'm gonna try this:

Has anyone used the Shea black castor oil ??

Splattherat · 26/06/2020 07:56

In lockdown I have started a variation of the CG method. I wash my hair just with just conditioner only (a Lush one) as its extremely dry and knotty, then i put a microfibre towel on, run a Cantu conditioner through the ends and use Cantu curling jelly then when dry scrunch out the crunch.

birdwatching · 26/06/2020 09:28

goos, I like this mask but I prefer the pink 10 in 1 mask from Shea moisture. The back castor oil is a bit higher in protein. depends what your hair needs.

Spat I also have very dry hair and tried lots of things and one of the worse things for my hair is a microfibre towel. I just use a normal towel to squeeze out excess water.

JMAngel1 · 26/06/2020 10:21

I love this style and am dithering as scared it's too high maintenance - mine is slighly longer than yours and more curly - I find the older I get, I don't suit it round my face so much just hanging down as it makes my face look downturned. I suit it up in a high messy bun but feel that at 48 I look like I'm trying to be a 20 something Grin. Plus with tbe bun, I'm not showcasing the actual curl!
So I feel your dilemma!
What do you think of this Thandie cut?

Aurea · 26/06/2020 11:58

Thandie looks lovely. She's so pretty. I'm not sure it it would suit my face shape. I will ask my hairdresser when I eventually get it cut.x

birdwatching · 26/06/2020 12:11

I had my hair once in a similar cut. Because it is so heavily layered, I just looked frazzled, the ends thin. I think it needs a certain type of hair and maybe a stylist but it didn't work for me at all.

JMAngel1 · 26/06/2020 12:30

Aaaah good to know, thanks. I did wonder about the ends looking bitty. It's hard to tell if a hairstyle is good or whether it's just the gorgeous face of Thandie swaying me!

GemmeFatale · 26/06/2020 23:37

I think that shape but shorter would be gorgeous on many curly girls

HotSince82 · 27/06/2020 18:44

Fellow curly here, I always thought I couldn't wear a fringe due to the curls but I went ahead anyway and honestly I love it. Its slightly eye skimming rather than blunt. I wish i had done it years ago, I have to wear my hair tied up for work and it just looks so much softer with a fringe.
I wet it slightly in the morning, apply some serum and gently dry it, takes five minutes.
Good luck if you decide to go ahead. Smile

Side parting? I have curly hair and feel a bit fed up with it but could be because I haven't been taking the same care in styling it at home and because I need a hair cut!

JMAngel1 · 15/07/2020 22:32

@Aurea. You look gorgeous - it's so shiny and healthy and the fringe is perfect.
