Help me completely revamp my style

Now lockdown is easing and shops are reopening I want to completely re vamp the way I dress and style myself. I am 27 5ft 9 and a size 10. Currently I just wear mainly jumpers and leggings, no makeup and hair in ponytail or french plait( also pre lockdown) and I want to look more stylish. Please tell me what hair, makeup and clothes you consider 'stylish' and presentable. I don't want to rock up at the school gates feeling drab Smile

What makes you happy? Colour? Patterns? Comfort? I think people who wear clothes that make them happy look stylish

prepset27 · 23/06/2020 13:02

I do love my sweats and leggings but I feel like it looks a little lazy

Do you see anyone whose style you admire (public figure or at the school gates)? What is it you like about the way they look? For me it’s about having make up on as I feel unpolished without. Once the makeup and hair look good (even in a ponytail) I’m ok!

In the winter it’s about my coat (second hand designer wool) and all the time it’s about footwear. For example I don’t like being able to see socks!

LittleOgres · 23/06/2020 13:09

I really like Baukjen, and they do nice relaxed styles that you might like? So you can still wear comfy stuff but be stylish. Athleisure wear is what I think its called.Grin
If you don't like wearing much make up, Trinny London is good, as it is simple to apply, very light.
Spend as much as you can on bag/shoes/jewellery. These things go with every outfit and should be timeless, so investments.

LittleOgres · 23/06/2020 13:10

With regards to hair and make up etc, its about effort to me. Yes, I can just stick my hair in a pony tail. But if I spend 5 mins extra, bit of texture, backcomb etc, it will just look much more 'done'. Same with make up.

PersonaNonGarter · 23/06/2020 14:35

You need to hit Insta and Pinterest. Just madly pin pics of people/outfits you like until you see a pattern emerge. And that’s your style. Then you can go for it with confidence (and cash).

Someone will be along to suggest you go to John Lewis Personal Shopper. Don’t do that.

For me, the easiest and most polished looking make up is By Terry Ombre Black Star eye crayons. The gold bronze one is particularly nice. Draw on eyelid, blend with finger and you look instantly a bit more glam. Team with mascara, sheer foundation and a tinted lip balm and you're good to go. I like cushion foundations but I live in Asia so that's probably why! If you want another few steps cream blusher and an eyebrow pencil.

Lurkingforawhile · 23/06/2020 16:04

@BusterGonad what's cushion foundation? Sounds interesting!

BusterGonad · 24/06/2020 06:20

It's like a powder compact but instead of powder has a sponge filled with foundation, you dab it on your face with another sponge and generally the formula is quite sheer and offers a glowy finish. I have a Sulwhasoo one and I love it.

YouStupidBoy · 24/06/2020 07:13

I like NARS Pure Radiant tinted moisturiser if you want to still look natural - it evens up my complexion and gives me a glow, but I am not obviously "made up".

Jajarolo · 24/06/2020 07:44

Sports/street wear is comfy and fashionable. Follow people on insta that you like the look of. You are tall and slim so it should be easier to copy looks. In time you will hone your own style.. all stylish people start off copying or getting inspiration from someone they admire be it mum, a big sister, friend or a star.

StarlightLady · 24/06/2020 08:12

Ditch the leggings until winter and embrace the flowing summer dress.

Holymama · 24/06/2020 18:19

I would recommend this app: Goodonyou. It has all the most stylish, sustainable fashion you could need to feel confident and like you are helping the planet out too!

Flamingle18 · 24/06/2020 21:08

I felt like this so every 4 months or so I get a stitch fix box. You fill a bit in about your style, likes and dislikes etc and they send you a box of clothes which you aren't obligated to buy. I have had some really lovely things that I wouldn't have probably picked in the shop because of playing it safe. They send you a card with the item on and ideas of how to style it

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 01/07/2020 15:18

I’m not the best dressed person ever by any means (check out the mamans de mumsnet fashion threads for those ladies!) but my personal rules are:

  1. Natural fabrics look best. Cotton, linen, wool (if you can wear it - I can’t). Cheap, synthetic fabrics tend to look just that.
  2. A dress always looks put together and ‘styled’ and requires a lot less effort that finding a top and trousers that go when you’re pushed for time in the morning.
  3. I don’t wear a lot of make-up and it’s just not me. But I love the NARS tinted moisturiser in place of foundation, and I always pop a bit of pencil to fill in my sparse brows and a quick bit of mascara.

I’m trying to branch out at the moment as lockdown has put me in a rut of the same comfy, not very stylish, outfits!

Another vote for Stitchfix here. I couldn't believe the extent to which my stylist "got" me Smile

I have kept all my items (five in a box) so also get a 20% discount. You get a refund on the £10 styling fee if you keep just one item and you can tell them loads and loads about what you want/don't want.

Here's a £15 off code if anyone wants the referral www.stitchfix.co.uk/invite/ffztmxfkwh?sod=w&som=c

How come?

PersonaNonGarter · 01/07/2020 18:46

Cos you will look like the people that get styled in John Lewis.

I know it is really popular on here. Like having your colours done, or wearing Hush. But actually the OP needs to get right into her own style. Find it and get confidence from that.
