Perioral Dermatitis

My 16yo DS has a flare up of Perioral Dermatitis around his mouth. It's like it's been dormant for the last 6 months or so and it comes and goes for no apparent reason. Right now it's back and he feels very self conscious about it. He does have a history of eczema and in the past has had to use very strong creams, but not for a while.

I would like to help him tackle this naturally. Obviously he'll go to the GP if necessary. I was wondering if any of you have any personal experience of Perioral Dermatitis and what might have helped?

Hi. I’m afraid I haven’t actually had it. But I’ve started using a new brand called Lyonsleaf. All natural, I use the beauty balm and their calendula and mallow one. Lots of reviews mention perioral dermatitis for another of their creams. I think it’s the zinc and calendula one. Worth a look?

I’ve had this. GP was useless, thought it was eczema and prescribed me steroid cream, which made it worse. You need an clindamycin topical treatment. I got a private prescription from a dermatologist. Took quite a few weeks to go but then disappeared completely. I also hated it and couldn’t believe how bad it was when looking back at photos

In general avoid GPs for dermatology complaints as they are tricky to diagnose if not a specialist

I was recommended Canesten 1% Clotrimazole Cream (think it was on here) and it helped a lot.

I had it a couple of years ago, after a lot of trial and error, this Bioderma cream completely cleared it. Amazing stuff, you should be able to get it from boots

I had this. I self-diagnosed, read exactly which meds cured it (think it was an antibiotic) and went to the GP armed with print outs, ready for a fight. The GP had been to some kind of dermatology training that week and knew exactly what it was, wrote the prescription immediately and it cleared up within a week and thankfully has never returned.

I know you want to try other things first but thought I'd give some hope that it can be fixed permanently.

I've just finished a course of antibiotics for perioral dermatitis after nearly a year of being given every topical treatment under the sun, from anti-fungal creams to increasingly stronger steroids. I was about 95% sure it was PD (lots of research!) but my gp refused to accept my diagnosis Hmm

Some people seem to take well to topical treatments so it's worth trying that initially. I used the Canesten 1% Clotrimazole Cream and that seemed to prevent it getting any worse but didn't improve it much.

The last time I went to the GP I was at the end of my tether with it. A young locum was covering and I'm sorry to say I almost bullied her into giving me antibiotics which have cleared it up a treat with no sign of it coming back 3 months later!

Get him a toothpaste without fluoride or SLS- health shops should do them. You'd be surprised how often people become allergic to ingredients almost overnight.

I get this whenever I use adult toothpaste. I have to resort to the kids berry flavoured or mild mint to get by.

The only cure for me is a 3 month course of Lymacycline.

It took a few years to diagnose. Started when i was pregnant in 1997..

I suffered with a patch by my mouth for years. Tried all types of skincare ranges and topical treatments. A 3 month course of Oxytetracycline antibiotics was the only thing that cleared it and it’s not returned since...

I have just had a flare up of this, I’m 48 and it appeared from nowhere! I eventually had a phone appointment with gp after I’d tried over counter remedies, hydrocortisone is the worst! I was prescribed an antibiotic lotion, cleared it up a bit but still noticeable, was then prescribed lymeceline oral antibiotics and it’s almost gone. I’ve also changed moisturiser to weleeda skin food lotion light. Have a look at nadine baggot as she has a great bit about it in her you tube channel

Hi, just wanted to share something you might want to try. I'we struggled with perioral dermatitis since I was a teenager, and have tried it all. For the past 10 years or so, metronidazole cream plus one of those acne lamps kept it under control. But then got a flare up about half a year ago that just would not go.

But about a week of azelaic acid has cleared it up - started with Paula's Choice 10% and then Facetheory 15%, you can also get stronger ones on prescription. Worth a try maybe.
