Wavy hair nightmare

Alittleshortforaspacepooper · 22/06/2020 13:14

My hair is wavy, probably 2b/2c, but it has a few random straight/2a bits.

It always looks shit. I've tried curly girl and it still gets frizzy. I wash, condition, then wide tooth comb, pat dry with a cotton t-shirt and then scrunch in my leave in conditioner and let it air dry. Once dry the waves are quite strong but frizzy, and then within a day or two they fall flat and it looks like a rats nest.

Please help! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Forgot to mention I have tried scrunching in gel after the conditioner and it still turned out frizzy and shit

It’s have a mix of 2a/b hair. Instead of leave in conditioner I have been using bumble and bumble Curl luminous oil spray. I do as you do but use a curling wand to define a few individual pieces and the oil seems to be working to protect my hair, it’s in great condition considering it hasn’t been cut in 4 months (but oh the roots!).

onwheels · 22/06/2020 13:52

i have this type, as does my sister. serums dont work, oils etc the texture of our hair is coarse waves on top, loose spiral underneath. we can't get those perfect curls after years of trying.

best thing for us and also very cheap is a spray bottle filled with cooled boiled water with a large dollop conditioner mixed into it. i spray this every morning and refresh during day if i'm at home.

keeps the curls and frizz a bit more under control without being too oily or making it go crispy from a product like texture spray/curl creme/gel spray or curl revive spray etc

Lockdownhairdontcare · 22/06/2020 13:52

Should declare I regularly straighten too Blush

PickAChew · 22/06/2020 13:57

You probably needed more gel! I undergelled, yesterday, and my hair looks crap, today!

If your hair is fine, you might be better off with mousse, though.

It's also very weather dependent. My hair reacts very differently in winter, than in summer and differently again, depending on air humidity.

And then there's those days where, regardless of what I do, it does what the hell it wants!

Moooms · 22/06/2020 14:05

I was using gel, but couldn't get on with it, so tried mousse instead and have found that to be much better.
I leave on quite a bit of conditioner from the shower, detangle, then scrunch in the mousse, then diffuse it half way dry and let it air dry the rest of the way.
I can get a second day or if it if I wear a turban to bed, but if it looks crap and curls are squashed I do a wet reset. Only way twice a week, one of them is a cowash, so actually only shampoo once a week.
Keep trying different things and you will find something that works for you, don't give up yet! Smile

lotusbell · 22/06/2020 14:36

Sounds like my hair, its shit isn't it?
Currently counting down the days until I can go and get a trim and the thinning scissors on it, it is so bulky and it looks really dull and unhealthy when it's this thick.
If I leave it to dry naturally, it curls but I have half arsed bits too and my hair curls in a really inconvenience place so it bushes out just above my ears. I haven't got time or energy for using products. It looks awful down but wearing it tied back every day has given me that frizz halo at the hairline.
Sorry, I realise I've been no help whatsoever but good luck. I'm one step away from shaving it all off but that would be foolish of me now I've come this far! 😆

Alittleshortforaspacepooper · 22/06/2020 15:06

Hmm... I've never tried mousse! I will get some and give it a go!

What brand do people recommend?

I have the same hair! Though mine's more 2a/2b, but dead frizzy and fine. If I don't 'style' it in some way it dries in a lump of frizz, neither straight nor curly. I no longer straighten or use heat so I try to get some ringlets or shape to it by doing little finger twists when it's wet, using a curl cream like Shea Moisture curl & style milk and air dry. I don't use mousse or gel because I find them too drying. I find a curl cream or leave in conditioner works best.

On non-wash days I don't 'refresh' with water as it adds frizz, but I just use some leave in on the ends only, so that they're not frizzy. Like Garnier Hair food, it gives a bit of moisture to the ends and revives the curls somewhat, without adding frizz.

I also avoid sulphates and silicones in my products as I think they do add frizz and dryness. They always say don't brush your hair when dry but I do, my hair is so tangly I can't help it.

SorrelForbes · 22/06/2020 16:26

I too have a mixture of 2a and 2b and have spent years trying to get it to look nice! I've come to the conclusion that even when the curl/wave looks ok, the ends are just too frizzy and I look better when it's more 'groomed' (dried or curled). Grin

2020times · 22/06/2020 21:55

I don't know what 2a/b is but mine is very thick and slightly wavy (so it looks kind a triangular Bush) however Argan oil is doing wonders for it, I just put a very small amount on while wet and it's not frizzy or bushy at all now

LightOfAThousandStars · 22/06/2020 22:32

I have the same kind of wavy hair and it is a nightmare to manage! I have tried the curly girl method but it doesn't work for me, no matter what I used my hair felt producty and weighed down. I use Aussie Moist Range shampoo and conditioner along with the Aussie Curl Serum applied to wet hair. This combo seems to calm it down and ny hair still feela lightweight.

Alittleshortforaspacepooper · 23/06/2020 06:09

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Looks like I'm going to have to keep trying new things and see what helps...

I just get so frustrated because when I go to the salon my hairdresser is obsessed with my hair and says how lucky I am to have such beautiful, thick, tight waves, and I see pictures of celebrities and vloggers online who seem to have very similar hair to mine and it always looks fantastic! Yet mine always looks bloody awful, no matter what I do! It makes me feel like I have this magic beauty power that I keep messing up so it doesn't work properly.

Sorry, rant over Grin

I have the same type of hair. Wavy and fine. It drives me mad. I've been doing cgm and had some success with mouse then gel.
Mouse has been sgx nyc so whipped and gel is umberto giovanni curl gel. Leave until completely dry then scrunch out the gel. Looks quite good 1/2nd day, after that I wear it up.

bookworm14 · 23/06/2020 07:09

This sounds like my hair - thick, dry and wavy and never looks ‘done’. I’ve tried every serum and cream going but nothing makes a difference (neither does curly girl). I’m afraid I’ve given up now and just dry it straight with a Babyliss Big Hair. Straightening is the only thing that makes it look half decent.

inappropriateraspberry · 23/06/2020 07:25

Same! Hate the feel of having heavy products in my hair like gel so use Pantene no. 5 mousse instead. Still not got the routine quite right, some days are better than others - but if it's not great I put it up!

Ginfordinner · 23/06/2020 22:12

Can someone explain what 2a and 2b hair is please.

My wavy lockdown hair is horrible, so I have been looking for wavy hair threads for ideas to improve it.

Pandapotato · 23/06/2020 22:43

My hair sounds just like yours. After years of trying different things, the best thing I found is boots curl mousse. So cheap too! A small blob after a wash & leave to air dry gives me nicely defined, non frizzy waves.

tumtitum · 23/06/2020 22:47

Sounds similar to my hair too! I have been doing curly girl ish since September. I low poo once a week and co wash a second time. During lock down I've been just using a tiny bit of curl activator when wet and leaving it to air dry and it gets a nice loose wave. For frizz I use aloe gel, it's really nice and doesn't leave hair feeling producty at all. I also use mousse sometimes, I think it's better for waves then gel. I use Shockwaves no 5. It is a nightmare isn't it. I've gone years not even realising my hair was wavey and never being able to wear it down unless straightened 🙈

tumtitum · 23/06/2020 22:47

Oh and no matter what I do I only get two good days out of my hair! I then just tie it back, or tie it half up as my underneath is more curly!

lotusbell · 24/06/2020 13:47

Haircut booked for July 9th! Never been so pleased to have my haircut!

SavoyCabbage · 24/06/2020 13:54

You’ve just got to keep trying different things. I’ve two curly haired dds and although their hair looks the same it isn’t and they both use different conditioners and products and even brushes. What works on one makes the other ones hair a disaster zone.

Jajarolo · 24/06/2020 14:08

The pink boots hair gel is very good for defined curls otherwise do a keratine treatment

SirVixofVixHall · 24/06/2020 14:13

Josh Wood everything cream. Miracle product, honestly. My hair is v curly and fine, this gives the curls shape, keeps hair soft, stops it going to fuzz, yet isn’t sticky or with that horrible silicone feel.

hoxt · 24/06/2020 14:16

Yes, keep trying different products. Also the technique you apply your products with really makes a difference. If you post a picture we might be able to help.
