Hair pearls. How would I do this?

There is an article in today's Glamour Magazine email about wearing pearls in your hair decoratively here Glamour magazine article.

This up-do is how I wear my hair every day, almost identical style, colour, everything. I've got lots of hair accessories and I'm always looking for ways to make it look prettier and a bit more interesting.

I love the pearls but don't want to look like a bride. How could I create a low-key version of this? Where would I buy them from? How would I fix them to my hair? Would you suggest any alternative to pearls?

Its super bridal.

Could you not just get some pearl barrettes?

Bertucci · 18/06/2020 20:32

I had my hair like this when I got married (in my defence it was the 90s).

The pearls were on kirby grips and were just poked in randomly.

Beetle76 · 18/06/2020 20:36

I also had them in my wedding hair so I think they are very bridal too. Mine were on little wire spirals/coils.

BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney · 18/06/2020 20:36

The come on a little metal twist and you sort of screw them into the hair. Like this

Too bridal sorry.

Bella2020 · 18/06/2020 20:50

Why not try some brighter coloured pearls or stones set on the end of bobby pins, pushed into the bun only?

FightMilkTM · 18/06/2020 20:50

I’ve been watching real housewives of Beverly Hills on Netflix and Adrienne Maloof wears hair tinsel (disclaimer: it’s 2010) and she’s a literal billionaire.
So I think just wear the pearls if you want.

redorbed · 18/06/2020 20:57

It's done with Hair pearl pins they look amazing

ThatShallot · 18/06/2020 22:41

My OP says I don't want to look like a bride. You aren't to know this but my hair is fine, there's lots of it and the big pearls as shown in the photo would look huge and I would want to avoid that

I do like the idea of wearing pearls in my hair. A barrette would squash the bun or the sides, I wind my hair at the sides to add volume and keep it looser. When I wear a barrette I style my hair differently.

I've tried the ones that twist not with pearls on in years past. They either fall out or get tangled up.

Maybe hair grips are the way to go, I've got some spare real pearls so I'll have a go at glueing the pearls to the grips and see how it looks in my hair.

Sadly I'm not Real Housewife material FightMilkTM . I can still channel their styling, I reckon Smile. As I've had to wear my hair tied up for work for years I'm going to make it as interesting as possible.

We're not allowed to use 'wild' hair colours. I'm not the type to have mermaid dyed hair but I do think it looks beautiful. I reckon if I want to stick a few pearls in my bun then it's doing no harm. Fuck it, if I fancy wearing my wedding dress round the house like a pandemic Miss Havisham then I'll do that too I won't but ya know Grin

There are literally hundreds of pearl hair clips in the online shops at the moment. You really don't need to glue pearls onto clips! There are also giant versions which would make a statement and are fashionable at the moment.

Personally I would do your hair as usual then put a large pearl hair slide either side of the bun.

Immigrantsong · 18/06/2020 23:40

OP how do you do your hair like this please? Is there any tutorial?

FenellaMaxwell · 18/06/2020 23:51

@immigrantsong it’s very easy. Backcomb the hair at the crown of your head a bit, then put the hair at the crown and the back only into a mid-height ponytail, leaving the sides of your hair down. Split the sides of your hair into two - a front section and a back section. Take the two back sections, twist them loosely then pull them back and cross them over on top of the ponytail and secure with a Kirby grip. Leaving a few strands to frame your face, take the front sections, twist them loosely and then cross them over under the ponytail and pin. Gather all the hair at the back - pony tail and the ends of the front sections of your hair is super long, and just twist loosely into a bun. (You can add a doughnut if you have fine hair)

ThatShallot · 19/06/2020 01:05

Pretty much as FenellaMaxwell says but without the back combining in my case.

I do it slightly differently but not much.

Look on e bay, there are loads of two pronged pin things that just slide into your hairstyle, I got some very pretty flowers on pins when my hair was long

My SIL made me a pearl hair accessory for my wedding, she used pearls and really fine wire to make a hair vine like this, my hairdresser pinned it in place with hair grips:

www.etsy.com/sg-en/listing/679068917/extra-long-hair-vine-bridal-hair-vine

All it took was some pliers, and the pearls and wire, I reckon you could make whatever you wanted to stick in your own hair. My hair is very fine too, and it stayed put until my mum took it off at the end of the night for me.

ThatShallot · 19/06/2020 16:03

Thank you everyone. I love the idea of flowers on a wire wound through my hair too.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes those pins that are clusters of pearls are lovely, I think I could get away with one or two of them in my hair without looking bridal.

katmarie the ones made with wire are lovely, I could do that. I'm going to use shorter wire and I'll have a go, not just with pearls but with flowers, crystals and other things too. That's a very useful recommendation.
