When did you start going grey?

I got my first grey at 17 and now at 28 this is the longest I've gone without dyeing it and have discovered that my roots are about 20% grey!
Normal?!
How grey are you? When did it start?

OP posts:
hopefulhalf · 14/06/2020 17:40

26 , now 44 and I would say it is noticable maybe 20-30%

Alsohuman · 14/06/2020 17:42

First grey hair at 16. My granny was completely white at 30 and I reckon I probably was too. I stopped dyeing when I was 43 and it grew out entirely silver.

AnnaNimmity · 14/06/2020 17:44

I've got about 10 grey hairs all in one place- they all appeared when I was 27 after a particularly traumatic incident and I'm 50 now. Very dark brown hair .

I do have one white chin hair though.

cakemeupbeforeyougogo · 14/06/2020 17:47

56 and less than 5%. Take after my dad. I would love grey hair, though

Cocolapew · 14/06/2020 17:47

I have no idea because I started dyeing my hair at 14. I would say pretty early though, my mum's side of the family all went grey young. I remember grey roots in my late 20's.
This is me at 51.

I have dark hair and am mid - 40s and just noticing an occasional white hair creeping in.

AhBallix · 14/06/2020 18:24

I was in my late teens when the grey hairs started to sprout. By the time I was 30, I would say I was about a quarter grey. My natural colour was brownish black, so the roots always looked horrendous. I imagine I'm completely grey now at 53, but I haven't let the roots get long enough to find out. I keep promising myself I'll let it grow out grey, then cave after a while. I dye it medium brown now though, having scaled back over the years from natural black.

CrazyHorse · 14/06/2020 18:29

I started going grey mid 20s. Mid 40's now and I find the occasional dark hair, otherwise I'm white.

CrazyHorse · 14/06/2020 18:41

According to some posters on MN going grey is letting yourself go. I beg to differ.

I had my hair highlighted three times and went from dark brown to this. On the third time I didn't have my roots done. I hated it when I walked out of the salon, but now I'm embracing the grey and won't go back (I was having my roots done every few weeks which was boring and time consuming and expensive).

Mine’s a very similar colour. I expect you get a lot of compliments. I certainly do.
BestIsWest · 14/06/2020 19:13

Cocolapew gorgeous colour - do you use a particular shampoo or toner?

Cocolapew · 14/06/2020 19:17

I use a very tiny bit of Fanola No More Yellow mixed in with Tresemme 2 in 1deep clean shampoo and conditoner.
I do Almosthuman, I've had a pixie cut for years and have grown it over the last wee while because I like the colour even though I hate having long hair HmmGrin

justilou1 · 15/06/2020 04:29

My parents had very dark brown hair. Dad’s was almost black. I think my mother started dyeing hers mid 40’s (and lying about it), and dad went grey from the middle of his beard, then up and over his ears like a badger, slowly. He died aged 69 with slightly getting temples. My greys are on my temples too, but you really have to look to see them. I think they’ll blend in and unfortunately make my hair a dull beige rather than the stunning silvery colour in the photos above. (Very jealous, ladies, your hair is very chic!)

Nobodysdiary · 15/06/2020 04:37

I’m in my 50s and hardly grey at all, just the odd few around my hairline. I have had my hair highlighted for years but it is coming through dark in lockdown.

tinseltitsandlittlegits · 15/06/2020 04:56

This year aged 46 . I never had a single grey hair until this year but now they are growing through very fast.

whiteblue · 15/06/2020 04:59

I'm 60 and have just started getting a few. Lucky I guess.

Purpleartichoke · 15/06/2020 05:22

46 and I have no grey. Plenty of other signs of aging, but not the hair.

GarlicSoup · 15/06/2020 05:30

14

CrumpetyTea · 15/06/2020 05:32

48 ( a few months ago) - I only have a couple in my parting but am a bit gutted as I was smug about not having any!

thisisfarfromideal · 15/06/2020 06:20

Started around 27. 10 years later I have pure white streaks through the front like Lily Munster. My hair is naturally black/brown but it's highlighted blonde to blend it through. Lockdown has let my roots grow and I'm about 40% grey now.

Definitely get it from my fathers side. My mum is 56 with none and my grandfather 76 with none at all!

I just want it all to go white now!

Haz1516 · 15/06/2020 06:30

At 28, I got my first couple while pregnant, but not noticeable. Now I have quite a few round the front, my hair's naturally quite fair so it's not too noticeable yet, but they definitely seem to be progressing quickly - tempted to reach for the dye!

TheProvincialLady · 15/06/2020 06:34

Found the first one or two at 41. Now at 46 I still only have a few.

goose1964 · 15/06/2020 09:24

Like some posters I'm also mid 50s with only a few greys. Both my dad and my eldest assumed I dye it.

Areallthenamestaken · 15/06/2020 09:31

I had a very traumatic year when I was 23 and sprouted lots of greys over night. Now I'm pregnant they seem to be multiplying but again, another awful year (aside from baby).

Montysmam1 · 15/06/2020 09:50

I'm in my late 40s and really noticing the grey during lockdown, though I know they have been appearing for about 6 years now! Thankfully I have highlighted hair, so my grey roots are actually blending in lol!
