What to wear for sister winter wedding.

She's wearing a dress in a very similar style to what I would have chosen. 1950's tea dress style in grey lace. She's not having bridesmaids as it's very low key. So I don't want to look overdressed compared to her. I'm a curvy size 14/16. The wedding is in the Lake District in January so needs to be practical and warm. Any ideas? I was looking at Coast but they seem to have closed.

You'd be better posting in the Style and Beauty section, OP. I've reported it to MNHQ for you - you'll get really good advice in there.

I ordered from Coast last week (their advert popped up on Facebook).

Velvet!

SpeedofaSloth · 13/06/2020 21:46

Love those velvet dresses.

Have a look at the Skyla dresses from adini.

Is it a church wedding? Where is the reception in relation to the ceremony?

If you're spending time outside/in a draughty church then think about a lovely cloak or coat as that's what will be in lots of photos.

Velvet is lovely but don't wrap yourself up too warm for centrally-heated indoors proceedings. You don't want to be sweltering on the dance floor in thick tights

I've always thought a very good fitted pair of trousers, blazer and simple cami top would be nice for a winter wedding. A simple pair of strappy sandals and a dramatic pair of earrings.

That blue velvet dress, the second link, is gorgeous.

It's a a civil ceremony with afternoon tea afterwards. Fairly informal I think. I was hoping to be bridesmaid, but she's decided against having any, which is ok. But I want to avoid liking like I'm trying to be one!

There will be no dance floor, thank God. We both hate that kind of thing! My dad who is also a mumsnetter are very disappointed at her lack of Bridezilla entitled behaviour.

A velvet wrap dress.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/06/2020 22:36

I'm
Kind of thinking of Coasts midi dresses. With the black top and mid length skirt.

What's your budget?

Ardnassa · 14/06/2020 06:00

Any chance you could give us a sense of budget, your usual style (aside from 50s tea dresses) favourite colours etc?

Have always thought jewel colours in silk and velvet are lovely for a winter wedding. Zoe Vine has some pretty midi dresses in rich colours which could be worn with a long coat or cape in another jewel colour.
