10 year old and pimples

Please can I ask advice about my 10 year old DD and her skin. She has definitely got hormones swirling around; needs deodorant, has armpit hair and eye rolls worthy of a proper teen. However she is also getting pimples and is upset about them. I have purchased her some cetaphil face wash as she has sensitive skin which she is not convinced about (although hasn't really given it a chance...). Please can anyone advise on antispot/nonstripping products for young and sensitive skin? many thanks!

I have just looked into this. The best one so far is a neutrogena scrub. Seems to have helped with the inflammation?

I think freederm is quite good. Failing that soap and glory do good spot washes and exfoliants. Whatever the weather though don't but the wipes, they just swirl round the bacteria from my experience. Look for anything that says non comedogenic. Bless her I hope she sorts it out soon Smile

We’re sticking to a gentle soap at the moment to get rid of the dirt. We’ve got a carbon soap.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 10/06/2020 10:20

thank you - do you think there is a need for moisturiser? her skin in pretty shiny but I am wary of stripping it and making the problem worse. I use a cleansing oil which she is aghast at!

If your using a cleaner that is making her skin dry than perhaps a moisturiser but at 10 it sounds too old for her doesn't it!!! I still say freederm but it might be trial and error. Have you seen the acne face masks?? I know it's not 'acne' but they clear pores?? It's like a peel off one - maybe good once a week for pampering herself if she's into that??

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/06/2020 13:49

Topical antibiotics off the dr? The increase in oil is feeding the bacteria and the skin is going to pump oil out during puberty. You have to avoid scarring.

It’s a shame she is so young to be going through this.

La roche posay effaclar is for oily blemish prone yet sensitive skin. There is also a moisturiser in the same range.

In boots and not too expensive. The problem with the ‘teenage’ skin case section is a lot of it is very drying and stripping and if she has young and sensitive skin it may do more harm than good.

The only thing I would say is that it will take time to improve, and she needs to commit to washing her face thoroughly twice a day. At a similar age I started to get spots but although they bothered me I was too immature to commit to a routine and my acne became very bad during my teens.

Cerave SA cleanser and moisturising lotion may be a good start. Warm water and gentle flannel cleanse. Oily skin can still be dehydrated do moisturiser can be useful. Make sure changing pillow case every couple of days and hot washing.

Lush fresh pharmacy face soap and the chocolate mask ... also kinda 'trendy'

SiennaSienna · 10/06/2020 13:59

I would be cautious about introducing cleansers and face washes at this age unless her whole face is affected rather than a few spots here and there. We have the spot treatment wand from the Boots Tea Tree & Witch Hazel range that we apply on individual pimples only and it works a treat. If it's her whole face then I would agree with the La Roche Posay Effaclar range but make sure she uses a gentle moisturizer anyway.

Nanalisa60 · 10/06/2020 14:06

Avon do a nice range of spot cleansers and moisturising creams(clearskin) would agree with another poster change her pillow case ever two days (hot wash) and bedding every week, also if she has long hair tie it back loosely for bed so it keeps off her face.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 10/06/2020 15:24

Thank you all. She is definitely pimply rather than full on spotty. Left on my own I would just be encouraging her to wash her face with water, but she is a perfectionist and is demanding that I 'fix' it... I will keep a list and get her to choose when she is allowed in Boots again! Effaclar I used to like and will get the Boots Tea Tree wand thing! Am not familar with Avon so will check them out.

My ten year old is the same. Pimply rather than angry red spots.
I spoke with a pharmacist and she actually said for her to take one anti- histamine a day and keep her hair back off her face.

It’s working too!

FruChoc · 10/06/2020 15:34

Nadine baggot has a good YouTube vid on pimples/acne skin recently- apologies I can't link right now. But it's good - explains why/what is needed to manage teen skin (I think she recommends LRP range).

CorianderLord · 10/06/2020 16:20

Yes she needs a moisturiser. My mum started me using it at about 7. It just locks in moisture so I don't see why you wouldn't get her it.

Warm flannel with a cleanser and water morning and night followed by a moisturiser. Cetaphils is non-comedogenic.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 10/06/2020 17:34

will definitely do hair off face too - that will be a battle tonight!

Maybe have a look at the Dr Organic range from Holland and Barratt? Their products are all natural so suitable for sensitive skin!
Even though your daughter's skin is likely to be oily, use a moisturising cream afterwards- when you do not moisturise your skin produces more and more oil, causing breakouts. Using a moisturiser will help the skin to lock in moisture.
Also make sure she uses sunblock too! UV rays can trigger spots to appear.
