Can I rescue my hair? Picture included

I decided to put a dye on, but didn’t realise just how dark the dye I’d picked up was. It’s almost black! Despite my yellow appearance here I’m usually very fair skinned.

How can I get it to be lighter? I like it a warm brown, I don’t think this suits me at all.

Wash it with head and shoulders. Repeatedly. It’ll fade loads.

DaphneFanshaw · 06/06/2020 14:46

It's a lovely colour even if you don't think it suits you atm.
This has happened to most of us at some point, if you wash it lots it will fade eventually.

onedaysoonish · 06/06/2020 16:09

I second head and shoulders - my hairdresser told me about it a while ago - apparently it's quite strong and it strips colour

Mnthrowaway20202 · 06/06/2020 16:36

My hairdresser told me back when he was in training at T&G, as a visual guide they placed head & shoulders on a wall and it stripped off the paint!

Frazzled2207 · 06/06/2020 16:41

I have done that several times. Brown hair die fades quickly. Not tried the head and shoulders trick but worth a shot.
I actually don’t think it looks that dark but having very pale complexion myself I know exactly what you mean.

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 06/06/2020 16:42

Blend some vit C tablets to make a powder and mix with Head and Shoulders or Vosene or plain white conditioner. Leave in for a couple of hours, rinse and style as usual. It leaves you with a warm colour but will strip lots of colour out.

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 06/06/2020 16:44

I do think it looks nice though and I can see the colour working with a pale complexion.

ChippyTea16 · 06/06/2020 17:48

There’s a colour reverse thing you can buy from boots if your hair dye is too dark. It strips you back to your previous colour. I used it once when my hair dye was almost black and was just too harsh on me. It made my hair go a bit gingery but it did strip the harsh colour out and then eventually I just re-dyed it.

I think it was called colour B4 or something like that

Sakura7 · 06/06/2020 17:49

I would try just washing it normally a couple of times before getting out the head and shoulders/vit c. There's a good chance it will resolve itself that way, it always has for me. If in a few days it's still too dark, try head and shoulders.

Hoohaahoo · 06/06/2020 19:15

Thanks everyone. I’m going to try the vit c/head and shoulders trick and see how it goes.

Did it work? And was this a permanent box dye or semi (I am eying up a box of Olia on the side at home with trepidation and wondering if boots do exchanges...)

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 21/06/2020 09:13

Try the colourB4. It smells of rotten eggs but it works.

Enderthedragon · 21/06/2020 09:17

I would just leave it to be honest, I think it looks lovely! And it will fade a bit over normal washes. The problem with stripping hair colour out with Head and Shoulders/ColourB4 is that the red pigment is often left behind which is why you always get the orangey very warm look. It's the same reason when you bleach dark hair it often goes orange, because the red pigment is the hardest to shift.

MoltonSilver · 21/06/2020 09:28

I did the same thing a few weeks ago. It's faded to quite a nice colour now. I think it's a combination of sun and frequent washing. There was a similar post here a while ago where someone said the vit c solution left their hair like straw. Maybe research it before trying it. It might not suit everyone's hair.

BelfastNonBlonde · 21/06/2020 09:30

Head & Shoulders - also Vosene shampoo can help strip colour

brianyslife · 21/06/2020 09:35

vosene Shampoo works really well for this I've never tried head and shoulders option

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/06/2020 10:58

I used the Vit C / dandruff shampoo to take out a Semi P burgandy (my hair was short at the time )

A couple of months ago , I did it to try and take out the over layers of dye ( going LockDown Grey now) it did work pretty well TBH , I wouldn't repeat it because it is a bit drying though loads of conditioning after to counteract .

You need maybe 20-30 tablets and powder them in a blender . Good squirt of dandruff shamppo , apply and wrap in clingfilm.

But , I've noticed dark brown dye is oftennear black.
Shakin' Stevens Hair wasn't a good look for me Blush

Hoohaahoo · 21/06/2020 17:45

It’s lighter but so patchy! Don’t think you can really tell from the photo though.
I’ve just been washing it, haven’t tried to strip it but I am tempted to.

I was thinking I could use the vit c stuff, strip loads of colour out, then use a moisturising mask on it. Then I could apply a warm brown all over. Do you think that would work?

Think this one shows the difference in colour from the roots more, the roots are dark, then it’s light and then dark again at the ends.
Also have far too much hair. Desperate for a hair cut!

What dye was it? And what colour was your hair to start with?

howdidigettobe50something · 21/06/2020 20:11

I would never recommend ColourB4. Used it on my daughter's hair after a semi permanent was too dark... It turned her hair light ginger. Spoke to our hairdresser who said that it often does that! I think the colour is lovely OP.

lucindalovescats · 21/06/2020 20:14

It will fade , leave it for a bit. You have beautiful hair. good luck!

MoltonSilver · 22/06/2020 09:37

Honestly, you're being way too over critical. Your hair is lovely.

Happydaysforever123 · 22/06/2020 09:54

Your hair looks lovely, like you've had expensive highlights.
