Budget beauty brands

There’s been a few recent threads about own brand foods etc and was hoping for some up to date recommendations for the same in beauty products/skin care. On my mat leave with DC2 and feel like my skin has aged a decade in a year! Combination of maternity pay and a furloughed DH means I really don’t have much spare cash for designer beauty brands but was hoping for some recommendations for high street equivalents. I hear Aldi do some good options but I’ve no idea where to start.

Thanks in advance!

Wilko has essence - a range of make up - I can only speak for the Mascara and lipsticks. I am fussy about mascara - slightly sensitive eyes and watery at that so need waterproof. Best, cheapest waterproof mascaras!

Oh and I have a Primark foundation on. I thnk it was £3. It is very good (and I have in my time bought Chanel, Dior, Lancome and Estee Lauder!!!

Aldi and Lidl's skincare is rated on here though I haven't used either much.

JessicaDay · 05/06/2020 12:45

Garden of Wisdom is pretty good. I like their salicylic serum and daily facial cleanser.

RiverCrossing · 05/06/2020 20:18

Another vote for Superdrug naturally radiant. I have used all sorts of premium skin care brands and this is excellent - the hot cloth cleanser and the glycolic acid toner in particular. Also a vote here for the Body Shop, they have a new vitamin E overnight mask that’s brilliant and both the camomile and seaweed ranges are great. Make up wise Revolution is really good - so yes, basically get yourself to Superdrug!

OffToSingapore · 05/06/2020 21:48

Another recommendation for Superdrug skincare here. I've liked everything I've ever bought from them, but the Naturally Radiant 2 in 1 moisturiser and serum is my favourite.

For make-up, I like the Essence range (stocked at Wilko). I buy quite a lot from there - foundation, nail polish, face powder, mascara etc - and I've never been disappointed. W7 (from Amazon/eBay/Savers/B&M) have some good bits too - I love their Porefection primer.

@Frustratedandworried, dying to try the Upcircle balm.but its 18 quid and I a) am already working my way through, erm, a few and b) am already lusting after a few other cleansers, can't justify it although I can tell I'd love it!

mommybear1 · 05/06/2020 22:50

I'm afraid another vote for Superdrug ranges previous devotee of Clarins and poooshhh ranges post baby and may leave cheap and cheerful and none time consuming - love Superdrug vitamin e range and their radiance range highly rate the ordinary caffeine for the eyes OP!!

Ginandbearit1 · 06/06/2020 07:08

I agree on Superdrug, their hot cloth cleanser in Naturally Radiant range is excellent and only a few pounds.

PollyPelargonium52 · 06/06/2020 07:29

I really rate Aldi Lacura hot cloth cleanser. Plus their amazing rose oil. I use four drops of oil morning and evening. I tried their toner but it was too astringent for me (I am 56) so I use Boots no 7 Radiant Results toner instead. I used to purchase lots of Liz Earle but cannot justify it any longer. I do have very good skin but these products are just as good as high end brands.

OxanaVorontsova · 06/06/2020 07:45

Definitely Superdrug, also the ordinary and beauty pie worth investigating

ifellintoarabbithole · 06/06/2020 08:19

Aldi Lacura Q10 Day face cream is the best cream I've used. Well absorbed, not too oily and works well under foundation.

Primark mascara - False Lash Queen (which I haven't seen in store for a long time so hope it's not discontinued) is awesome. It's quite similar to Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara that I was using before. And cruelty free too which is good. Their eyeshadow sucks though, don't bother with that!

janet1267 · 06/06/2020 08:57

I love the Aldi caviar day and night creams. Very luxurious to use and my skin has really improved.

I really rate Primark makeup - particularly the foundations and mascaras.

puffinandkoala · 06/06/2020 09:08

I love the superdrug own brand skincare products. Their Vitamin E range is great, and I use the day and night creams

I was going to say the same, I use the Vit E cleanse and polish (so much cheaper than, and just as good as, the Liz Earle cleanse and polish) and the SPF moisturiser.

mrsjg · 06/06/2020 09:17

Another vote for Superdrug Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser.

Superdrug is fantastic for a mooch around. Unfortunately we don't have one where I live.

SpeckledyHen · 06/06/2020 09:31

Superdrug Vitamin E. range . Excellent stuff.

LoadsaBlusher · 06/06/2020 10:12

MUA range at superdrug has Lovely on trend basic make up items - really rate their highlighter and bronzers

Poundland own brand make up for Eyebrow Pencil in Dark brown

Good old Rimmel for me too , some of their products are very good , I’m currently using their Lasting Finish foundation as a round a bout the house make up and have been Impressed

Rimmel exaggerate liquid eyeliner
Rimmel mascara beat any designer I’ve tried

Skincare I’m afraid I don’t have a routine to recommend, I just wash my face in the shower with whatever shower gel is there

I do swear by factor 50 on face though

Wish I had applied the sun cream rule to my décolletage with the same enthusiasm over the years , I am getting so much sun damage there now

buckeejit · 06/06/2020 10:46

Second the Aldi caviar cream, it's fab. Seventeen bb cream is vg & for a spritz Tiber, (not needed hit nice), boots botanics is good

MrsMoggy · 06/06/2020 11:02

I use lots of the aldi skincare stuff- the lacura hot cloth cleanser, Q10 day and night creams, the Q10 serum. I also use a revolution toner but hope to try the lacura one next time it comes on specialbuy.

For budget make up I have some great revolution brushes and blusher/highlighters. Boots natural collection powder is my favourite. Primark wonder lash mascara is amazing, I also like max factor mascaras which you can pick up in b and m for about £4 rather than £11 in boots. Collection concealer is great and the aldi primer when it’s available. I use an eye primer on my eyelids before eyeshadow which makes even the cheapest eyeshadows stay on and look better.

TheBigRoundSquare · 06/06/2020 12:35

Can I recommend Nadine Baggott. She’s a beauty editor and I started following her at the beginning of lockdown. I watched loads of her you tube videos and I’ve now dumped all my expensive products and gone for her budget recommendations and my skin is beginning to look amazing.

She recommends cleansing, vitamin c and hyaluronic acid for a morning routine and nothing I’ve bough has been more than £10.

Using up all my old products in the evening before I move on to her recommendations for that.

Frustratedandworried · 06/06/2020 16:53

lotusbell its def more than I'd usually spend on a cleansing balm but I love it! I do only use a small amount too so I'm hoping it will last a decent amount of time and I'll get my moneys worth!

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 06/06/2020 19:28

It’s not quite what you’re asking but I stumbled upon this lady on YouTube recently and tried her 60 second cleanse method (literally just wash your face properly for 60 seconds) and it’s absolutely changed my skin. What’s better than free right?

Nivea in a blue tub. Use as night cream, in elbows, cuticles etc

AlexChitChatting · 07/06/2020 10:37

Cleanser: coconut oil
Serums/acids: the ordinary
Makeup: budget ranges at Superdrug

PollyPelargonium52 · 09/06/2020 14:40

I do agree with slipperyeel Nivea with the blue lid is excellent for my heels and so much cheaper than expensive Boots foot cream for hard skin! I sometimes use it on my knuckles if my hand cream routine is slipping.

Battenburg1978 · 10/06/2020 13:00

Another recommendation for revolution eyeshadows and skincare here. I Usually use Lidl Q10 but they changed their day cream. I ordered myself some some revolution products (bakuchiol serum and eye cream, night mask and day cream) and I can really see a difference after a couple of weeks! Very pleased with it and with the eyeshadow palette I got. The 4 products came to just over £30 which is more than my previous Lidl day/night creams but the difference in my skin is worth it.

I believe the Ordinary does similar products and I read a blog which recommended particular products based on skin type. Will see if I can find it.

I’ve also heard really good things about Superdrug’s radiance products.

jmarie38 · 10/06/2020 13:12

I find Elf beauty products really good I actually find them allot better than high end stuff I've tried :)
