Shortening a knitted garment

Does anyone know if this is possible? It's not hand knitted but it is a knitted style fabric - pic attached. I need about a foot off (long dress) so it wouldn't be practical to just turn the hem under and sew it in place.

It’s a tricky one . I would run a line of zigzag stitching 1cm below desired length and then cut . Below the zigzag but close . Then turn up with a very slight zigzag stitch to the length you want .

You could always do a trial run 15cm up from the original length to see how op it works .

Is there a lining? That can also help to anchor the fabric when stitching.

Thank you both! There's no lining unfortunately. But Trumpton's suggestion could work. I would take it to a tailor or dressmaker for their opinion but there are none open at the moment!

I just cut, roll the raw edge over a couple of times and give it a good steam pressing under a damp tea towel. Done it quite a few times with cheaper knitwear and never had it unravel. Admittedly I wouldn't do it with anything expensive.
