Am I imagining this? Retailer e-mails

I am used to receiving e-mails about sales, offers, etc from retailers from whom I have bought something. Occasionally, if I have put something into the It virtual shopping bag but not proceeded to purchase I will get an e-Mail saying ‘Dont you want to go ahead?”

All of which I can live with .

However, over the last week two brands have e-mailed me after I simply looked at something or paused on it - without even clicking for the detailed info

I find this totally creepy and have unsubscribed. A pity, because I’m happy to hear about the sales etc- but I’m not happy with this additional tier of intrusion

Anyone else found this?

Yes, I've noticed it too, it's really intrusive and stops me from even thinking from visiting again. On some retailers you can opt out of that specific feature but keep the newsletter.

Richlyfruited · 29/05/2020 20:22

Is it just an ad on your email? I've had ads for a specific product on my email page after looking at an item online but never a direct email from a retailer - that does seem worrying as how are they getting your email address? Shock

I always report the ads as I think even getting those is creepy!

I put something for DS in my basket from JD sports, the next day had a text offering me free delivery! I was pretty shocked. I have shopped with them before but wasn't logged in to an account or using their app.
I've started rejecting all but essential cookies on most websites now as the "follow me" tracking etc is becoming too much.

Yes I got one "been checking me out" didn't know what the feck was happening for a minute Grin

Sarcelle · 30/05/2020 15:26

I have noticed it too.

Using an opt-out site like this will help reduce the targeted ads:

https://optout.aboutads.info/?c=2&lang=EN

Not sure it will help with the emails though I'm afraid!

I’ve noticed eBay is particularly bad for this recently. I don’t mind the emails reminding me something I have in my watch list is ending soon but I hate them sending me emails to say an item I glanced at for 5 seconds a week ago is ending soon. If I was interested I would have watched the item or bid on it.

Exactly!

So much for GDPR !!! Pile of ....

You have to click to allow cookies - no choice - otherwise you can't enter the site. Then you are targeted.

I’ve noticed to. Even if it’s been a quick look I get an email saying ‘forgotten something?’. It’s annoying. If I wanted it I would have bought it?
However I have noticed if I’ve had something in my bag and not done the whole order I sometimes get an email the next day with a 10% off code.

JaneJeffer · 31/05/2020 12:35

I've noticed that Boots do the complete opposite. They take everything out of the basket if you leave it for a while before ordering which is also very annoying!

MikeUniformMike · 31/05/2020 12:58

The eBay ones are really annoying. You look at a pair of shoes or a dress then get an e-mail about something similar. You follow the link but the shoes or dress will be a different size to what you looked at originally.

I might have liked the dress in size 10 but why would I want it in size 18, or the shoes in size 8 when I was looking at size 4?

MikeUniformMike · 31/05/2020 13:07

Also annoying are retailers contacting me too often. If they have regular offers, then I can wait until the next time.

EmpressJewel · 31/05/2020 13:49

I have been getting load of emails from eBay. Nothing is suitable.

Mumsnut · 31/05/2020 14:06

The retailers will be the losers if customers unsubscribe from mailing lists or Mark e-Mails as continuing spam

They are desperate for sales, I guess.
