Bio Oil for acne scars?

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 27/05/2020 10:06

I've had problems with cystic acne for many years, and I'm now at the stage where I'm not getting any new ones (it only took 40 years...). Unfortunately I was a bit of a squeezer and I now have a lot of noticeable red scars around my jawline. I was just wondering if anyone had tried Bio Oil on their faces? I had disappointing results when I tried it on some keloid scarring but I've heard it's good for the ones that are less raised. I don't like wearing heavy makeup so would really like to get at the source of the problem. Thanks!

You might find vit c better, are you wearing sun block every day?.

MushroomTree · 27/05/2020 10:34

Following with interest. I too have scars left by cystic acne Sad

I have very pale, sensitive skin that burns within about 20 minutes. But I don't really like being outside for long when it's too hot, so I tend to just go out for a short time with no sunscreen on, to get my vit d, and go into the shade when I've had enough. Obviously I do wear factor 50 if I have to be outside for longer than that.

Do you mean vit c supplements or some sort of topical treatment?

Bio Oil gave me the worst acne of my life Sad
Have a look at The Ordinary range of products, they have a vitamin c range which should help. Reasonable prices too.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/05/2020 11:33

The scars have melanin in them so put spf 50 block on your face all day. You’re making it worse if you go out with no protection on.

Vitamin c is sold b the ordinary, See which one you like the look of.

therona · 27/05/2020 11:36

Bio oil is not very good. Rosehip seed oil worked wonders for me, specifically the one from the ordinary.

TableNiner · 27/05/2020 12:32

Have you considered Azelaic Acid?

timetest · 27/05/2020 13:00

I would use tretinoin. It not only prevents acne, it resurfaces the skin.

Crystalspider · 27/05/2020 13:27

I've not found that bio oil helps that much on scars personally, years ago I use a product called dermasponge, that did help but not sure if it's still available, other than that, consistant exfoliation helps renew the skin, either scrub form or glycolic acid, a high percentage one.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 27/05/2020 13:36

Thanks, so it looks like The Ordinary is the place to go. Having had a quick look, they seem to be very affordable so I might get a couple of different ones and see what works.

Rosehip oil helped mine. Recently began using vitamin C so would suggest rosehip oil at night and vitamin C in the morning would really help tackle it. Sukin do an affordable rosehip oil (approx £15, large bottle) and Vitamin C Repair Serum by Balance Me (around £30 but will last months). Good luck.

MushroomTree · 03/06/2020 19:34

@Alexsay how much rosehip oil do you use on your face?

I bought some from The Ordinary and I think I've used too much because it doesn't seem to be sinking in.

Alexsay · 03/06/2020 19:51

Just a drop or two from the pippette provided. I either smooth it onto the skin directly, or drop a smidge into the moisturiser I'm using. I overused it at first, and made my skin go a little oily/spotty bit given how dry it was, it was an improvement! I'd suggest every other day to begin with. Sukin do a Rosehip range and I also use their night cream which has reduced how frequently I use the oil. It's truly has helped with the scarring. I used to use (when scarring was fairly recent and vivid) the grey Japanese exfoliating sponge and then drop some rosehip oil on which helps rejuvenate. I'll Google the sponge name now.

Alexsay · 03/06/2020 19:54

Konjac sponge. It really helped smoothen out my skin + oil/moisturiser. Good luck.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 03/06/2020 19:58

I got some of the Sukin rosehip oil too, and while I haven't been using it for long, I was surprised that it didn't make my skin oily. I suppose I just thought it was counterintuitive! I also got some vitamin C serum from The Ordinary so I'm using that in the morning and the rosehip oil at night. I hope it does help in some way.

Are you wearing sunblock too?.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 03/06/2020 20:18

I'm just not going outside tbh, due to a combination of depression, menopausal hot flushes, and self-consciousness about my horrible skin. But when I do, I'll protect myself accordingly. I didn't know that the sun made scars darker - I had some half-baked notion that UV light in moderate quantities actually helped!

Thanks @Alexsay I expect I've used a few drops too many. But given how dry the Adapelene is making my skin it probably won't do it any harm.

I looked at getting a Vitamin C serum from The Ordinary as well but they do a few different ones and I couldn't figure out which one would be best Confused

Alexsay · 03/06/2020 20:31

Yeah, I pretty much smothered it on at first! You'll find the balance. Good luck everyone!

Sarafive · 01/09/2020 10:45

Just checking back in to say that I stopped using my "Balance Me vitamin C Repair serum" for approx four days and my crater scars appeared much more vividly. I've been re-using the serum for around three days or so and just re-checked and they appear filled in almost/smooth, and much less visible. I've really found the vitamin C to be effective. I just had a lazy skincare routine for a few days and I'm surprised it had been that effective!
