Blue Shampoo. I use the Charles Worthington Colourplex one. My hairdresser reccommended "No More Orange" but the CW was easier to get.

Trying to rid my hair of red tones after colour correction and it does work. You can also use a small amount of semi-permanent blue hair dye in your conditioner once a week or so.

Dont use a hair color with red tones either

Mnthrowaway20202 · 25/05/2020 02:12

I don’t think so.

Blue shampoo will help to neutralise the tone to a certain degree but you’ll always have a ginger undertone to your hair - especially when the colour fades.

You could bleach it blonde then dye it back to brown, this is the only way to completely eradicate the orange undertone (but is unnecessarily damaging).

The trick is to use a dye that is described as Ash. A lot of brown dyes have red in so you want one with blue or green undertones which is Ash.

For years I’ve used Superdrug own brand natural light brown - it’s the only one I’ve found that doesn’t have any red tones. (It does go a bit gingery if left to fade too long, but I tend to dye quite regularly so don’t have this issue)

Thanks for this. Can I dye it ask brown over faded gingery brown? (I think it started as chestnut)

Yes. My hairdresser friend told me to dye my orange toned brown with an Ash brown. The blue/green will take out the orange. You need to Google hair dye number meanings and go with the secondary colours that are either green or blue.

BusterGonad · 25/05/2020 08:49

So a quick Google tells me with l'oreal hair dyes the numbers which fellow the first number you have are 1.Blue
2.Violet
7.Mat (I believe is a green)
Eg 5. 1 would be medium brown with blue under tones.
Avoid any between 3-6 as they are all red. 8 is mocha, not sure if that's red or blue based.

BusterGonad · 25/05/2020 08:57

My current favourite dyes at the moment are L'Oréal Deep Light Brown 521 which doesn't go ginger. So it's medium brown with violet and blue undertones. My next favourite is Revlon Colorsilk beautiful color in Medium Rich Brown 47 so it's a dark brown with mat undertones. Both of these look purple when washed out, which imo is a good sign as it means it's not a red/ginger based dye.

Boy do I wish I had read this on Saturday before I went shopping!Currently sitting with a L’Oreal number 6 on my head-I’m going to be red again which really doesn’t suit me!Before lockdown I had worked hard with my hairdresser to get red tones out and now I’m back to square one😭my natural hair is dark brown so always tend to go darker to try to match it.Sakes.

dementedpixie · 25/05/2020 10:41

If it's a 6 as the first number then that just tells how dark it is. PP is talking about the numbers after that first one as they denote other tones. Is it just a straight number 6?

BusterGonad · 25/05/2020 11:25

Yes, I'm talking about the 2nd and 3rd numbers. A first number of 6 is light brown. 1 is black 5 medium brown 10 blonde.

BigBairyHollocks · 25/05/2020 12:25

Ah right ok.It was a 6.3, and actually doesn’t look too bad. There was no really colour to what washed off in the shower either. Sure it’ll have to do for now and I’ll know better for the next time. Thanks

I have the answer! After putting up with my dyed brown hair going a horrible faded orange colour in the sun and trying all sorts of colour shampoos by chance I found the Aveda clove range. It doesn't smell great and the packaging is a bit meh but it works brilliantly. I would guess it has some dye incorporated into it as it's quite gunky compared to normal shampoo and conditioner but it's meant that I rarely have to have all my hair dyed and just get my roots done. So it helps with the condition as well (and is a bit cheaper).
You're welcome!
