Also you need a blue shampoo to subdue bright orange tones, not purple or a “no yellow” shampoo. Had you used blue shampoo instead, you wouldn’t have needed to leave it on for as long as you did here to make a difference

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 24/05/2020 18:27

Mnthrowaway20202, spot on. Basically what I was looking to say, too, albeit a tad less directly.

TBH, I've been my poor hair's worst nightmare at some points. I've DYI-bleached and coloured it to the brink of its very existence. (And I'm a repentant sinner: it's a professional every three months and a radical no-poo regime at this point in time.) My hair has literally broken off at the slightest touch before (this being after me trying a DIY platinum blonde) - but it's never taken to purple this well. Not even then.

I'm not saying this to discourage you, OP. Just advising caution. You don't want to be turning a minor disaster into hair-Chernobyl.

fuckyouSaul · 24/05/2020 18:34

I did leave the purple shampoo on half an hour

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 24/05/2020 18:42

I'm sure the bottle doesnt tell you to leave it that long!

MrMagooInTheLoo · 24/05/2020 18:49

Go a dark brown to cover it up.

fuckyouSaul · 24/05/2020 18:51

@dementedpixie I thought it would tone the orange down better but it's gone on the other bits and made it very purple

dementedpixie · 24/05/2020 18:52

Purple is for yellow though. Blue is for orange. Plus you get the purple look if left on too long

Dead2me · 24/05/2020 18:53

It kinda looks like an intentional colour, just style it out

MockneyReject · 24/05/2020 18:55

Can you get to a Poundland, OP?
Here is one of my (embarrassingly numerous) DIY bleach disasters, before and after one of their 'silver' box dyes.
I think yours is possibly not unsalvageable.

That's really nice actually @MockneyReject

MockneyReject · 24/05/2020 19:03

Yeah; I didn't expect it to do anything, so was surprised as well as relieved! Those photos are only 24 hours apart.

Barkingfuckingdogs · 24/05/2020 19:13

That is really nice email mockney.

Fanola is the strongest purple shampoo out there. 5 minutes is usually enough, let alone 30 minutes!

Moonshinemisses · 24/05/2020 19:18

Girl you need to watch some Brad Mondo videos on YouTube

Mojitomogul · 24/05/2020 19:21

30 minutes is far too long! I probably wouldnt put any colour on your hair, I would shampoo with fairy liquid to try and release any purple from the shampoo, then I would put on a really thick hair mask - or literally olive oil and egg as a protein mask- leave it for a while then rinse out. Your hair must be so porous to take to the purple so much, so you just want to condition it as much as poss! And do not go to bed with it wet - it roughens up the cuticle so make sure you gently blowdry it on medium heat

mumwon · 24/05/2020 19:22

look up images for scarfs covering hair

Nosurveysneeded · 24/05/2020 19:30

I had a similar problem and used a at home dye and my light blonde hair with grey in it went yellow....

Yuck

Nosurveysneeded · 24/05/2020 19:31

I love the colour Mockney.... what make and number was it please?

zaffa · 24/05/2020 19:34

I have had a similar problem with going orange and also left some purple shampoo on for half an hour but it didn't do that! Although it did massively tone it down I do still have brassy hair - what does head and shoulders do? Will that sort out the brassiness or the purple bits?

MockneyReject · 24/05/2020 19:39

Nosurveysneeded I just grabbed it in Poundland. I think there were two silver/grey ones, so I picked the one that looked darkest on the box lid.
It was a good few months ago.

Nosurveysneeded · 24/05/2020 19:41

Thanks MockneyReject

I have had a google and found some by Fanola that seem to do a similar thing and have ordered from Amazon... I am hoping to end up with a similar colour to you (fingers crossed)

imsooverthisdrama · 24/05/2020 20:10

I've dyed my hair today blonde but the roots are a touch ginger, what shall I do , will purple shampoo help ? .

Mnthrowaway20202 · 24/05/2020 20:19

Please don’t use washing up liquid on your damaged/bleached hair. I just think it would be too harsh. I’m actually cringing at the thought.

Even if you manage to strip out the purple, let’s be honest your colour won’t look that great after. You’ll have platinum blonde strands next to the darker/brassy bits. And thanks to the fairy, your hair will also be dry AF.

Just use normal shampoo or head and shoulders. Again, your goal should be maintaining the condition over the colour.

Surbitonsam · 24/05/2020 20:56

I second the suggestion of using olive oil to deep condition and remove the purple. You need to maintain the condition - fairy liquid is not your friend! Saturate your dry hair in olive oil, wrap in cling film and then wrap a towel turban style around it and leave for a couple of hours. Then shampoo out. Should work. If the purple comes out you can then us the purple shampoo again - but DO NOT leave it on your hair.
