Ok so coronavirus has left me with huge roots and with no sign of salons opening, I’m not sure I can last out. I have brown, not quite shoulder Length hair that I get foil half head colours done in every 8 weeks. I have 3 colours: a bleach, a warm blonde and a brown to tie it in to the remaining natural hair. My next appointment was 30/3!! So, my roots are brown with sprinkles of grey but more at the front. What can I do at home please?

Leave it

Oh hello, finally. I can’t bear it. Why?

If I were you, I'd leave it! I have long dark hair with 3inch of grey root and it's looks shocking but I'm holding out for my hairdresser so I don't mess it up and mine only has one colour. With your colour plus highlights I don't think there is anything you can do without salon help.

Teacaketotty · 24/05/2020 20:03

Honestly with highlighted hair it’s generally best to leave it or you could end up with a hefty bill for a colour correction job.

lilgreen · 24/05/2020 20:05

Thanks for answering. I know I can’t lighten my roots at home. It’s the greys I’m more bothered about. The photo shows a few but there’s more around my fringe and temples. I was wondering about covering them with a shade close to my natural colour, a root touch up or something.

Get a root cover up like Color Wow or the John Frieda spray. If you get it in a light golden brown, you would cover the greys.

Just leave it. If salons open after July 4th, as currently anticipated, you just have to wait 6 more weeks? They won’t be closed forever so it’s best to be patient.

Don’t put dye on your hair now if you intend to get highlights in the future. Virgin hair is the easiest to lighten, especially if it’s near your scalp. Once box dye is thrown in the mix, you possibly won’t be able to get your usual colour afterwards. Box dye lifts unevenly so you’re not guaranteed to get the colour you want. It will be brassier and darker than normal at the very least, with some banding/patchy areas. You also may cause unnecessary damage to your hair

Yeah, try the root touch up Spray ln, you can get them in Boots, it looked great on my friend, she used loreal Magic Touch in light brown. And you can just wash it out if you make a mistake. Good luck.

PeartreeProductions · 24/05/2020 20:49

Just to Add to my other post, the loreal root Spray In works better if you spray it in damp hair, doesn't leave the hair as dry looking.

cptartapp · 24/05/2020 21:23

My hair is almost identical. Loreal root touch up in dark blonde and light blonde is your friend. Bought online, difficult to get hold of in these colours though. I use a bit of both colours! More than adequate.

Wauden · 24/05/2020 21:33

Actually your hair looks pretty good.

lilgreen · 24/05/2020 21:38

Hey thanks @wauden. I have a spray but in a blonde so no good for now. It always felt horrible. Good tip about damp hair though. 6 more weeks is gonna be hard as I have fringe and that’s where most of the greys are. I’ll have a look at some more sprays. Thanks.

You can get powder touch up products, which won’t leave your hair feeling awful. Colourwow has a popular one at £28. (There’s probably cheaper options at Superdrug, or you could experiment with brown eyeshadow)

lilgreen · 24/05/2020 22:45

That sounds good, thanks. I wouldn’t mind but I’m back in work as opposed to wfh on 1/6.

I have medium brown hair which is dyed regularly at the hairdressers and lots of grey roots.

I have tried:

Colour Wow powder - good for a few greys but the powder comes off on your hands if you touch your hair. Expensive but lasts a long time.

L'oreal spray - not bad. Sometimes I use colour Wow powder as well if there are any stubborn greys not covered. To get to greys around your hairline spray onto a toothbrush and then apply for more precise coverage. Good value for money.

Josh Wood blending brush - good - use on damp hair and then blow dry to prevent it drying hard on your hair. I put the product on, blow dry my hair a bit and then if there is more grey to cover when it is partially dry I add more. Expensive and doesn't last 3 washes but very good. I would buy this again.

You can also watch youtube demos and reviews of root cover products.

Thanks for that @cleaningisboring great information. Smile

My hair is pretty much the same as yours. I did the roots with a L'Oréal root touch up in medium brown. It looks fine. I would have gone a shade lighter in retrospect. It has covered up the grey and blends in with my highlights.
