When did Boden switch their production to China?

I've just had a delivery and I'm irritated as I was trying to cut down on buying goods from China - not because I'm anti the Chinese people but because I want to buy more local/ethical as much as possible

But I was seduced by a couple of items because I got 30% off and just didn't think it was produced in China

Any idea how long they've been making in China? Is it all their goods now?

Years ago, at least for some of it. I have a couple of items I bought from Boden to wear for a friends 50th, which was 8 or 9 years ago, both made in China, and quite a few I've bought subsequently.

Hamsterian · 23/05/2020 19:02

Boden annoy me with their constant brochures in the post! I’ve emailed them 12 times over the course of three years and they don’t seem to be able to sort out their marketing comms. So annoying.
They seem to be all style over substance lately and not even great style.

CayrolBaaaskin · 23/05/2020 19:11

The anti Chinese racism really seems to have got worse since corona. For those who claim it’s because they disagree with the regime, what about the regimes in Bangladesh or Vietnam? The vast majority of lower cost goods are manufactured overseas, it makes us all richer. The rise of manufacturing in China has led to greater wealth everywhere, not just in China. It has meant we met the millennium development goals and lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. They may be Asian people, but they’re still people.

Ultrasoft · 23/05/2020 19:15

If clothes were manufactured here they would be so expensive we'd be back to one set of work clothes and one sunday best, which may well be a good thing.....

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/05/2020 19:15

If France start to cook cats and dogs alive I’ll take a dislike to the french too.

The Chinese government don’t see people as people, they’ve got massive human rights abuses too and help the North Korean regime going.

I agree, I own lots of tat and a couple of really nice things, the latter get worn lots more, I have been thinking lately about reducing how much I buy but making it count.

SpeedofaSloth · 23/05/2020 19:47

And I would prefer to support jobs here just now, if I can.

teta · 23/05/2020 20:11

It's been made in China for many years. We used to buy it in Stanley Market in HK when my kids were tiny and they are now 15.

Sickoffamilydrama · 23/05/2020 20:22

This article is interesting about how much it would cost to manufacture in the UK obviously with Volume you might get incremental saving.

CayrolBaaaskin · 23/05/2020 20:22

@Fluffycloudland77 - who’s cooking dogs? Racist tropes much?

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/05/2020 20:23

To be honest if it's mainly for ethical reasons that you don't want to buy from foreign manufacturers you'd be best to just buy second hand than buy new.

I agree with whoever said that British brands need more transparency, a lot of people would assume the likes of Seasalt etc are manufactured here.

chickedeee · 23/05/2020 20:24

Good luck with trying to not purchase from China- they produce parts for the majority of things in everyones homes.

The uk boil lobster alive perhaps stop buying stuff from us too Wink

totallyyesno · 23/05/2020 20:25

Labels can be really misleading anyway. A lot of things which say "made in Italy" are actually made in China but finished in Italy ie just hemmed or the labels added!

Scruffyoak · 23/05/2020 21:03

I would love to buy more uk made brands.so hard to find.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/05/2020 21:18

@CayrolBaaaskin

Yes they do that, how do you not know what goes on over there?.

Yes I know they boil lobsters alive here, I don’t like it and I don’t eat shell fish for that reason. It’s barbaric.

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/05/2020 21:37

Well I shall be avoiding from now on.

MoltoAgitato · 23/05/2020 21:41

I have a shirt dress, made in the UK by people paid a living wage, which is considerably cheaper than the Boden equivalent, and the quality is brilliant.

communityclothing.co.uk/

Community Clothing don’t have the range or choice but it’s not true that UK manufacturing is too expensive.

I thought Boden used a range of countries - I’ve got stuff from Portugal and Turkey, as well as China from them.

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/05/2020 21:49

@MoltoAgitato there's some lovely pieces on the Community Clothing website, thanks for sharing, and like you say, they're fairly reasonably priced too compared to other brands.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/05/2020 00:13

The Boden stuff is the first clothes I've bought this year that is new and unethical to me

I buy the vast majority second hand from EBay and the new stuff from Thought

I never return clothes because I don't go to the post office so if they are as crap as you're all saying quality wise they will be down the charity shop

Some of you are so charmingly backward with your "they eat dogs" and "in light of the current situation" bollocks. How are you not embarrassed? Do people not gently point out to you that you're an idiot irl?

woodhill · 25/05/2020 09:15

The ethical store?

The stuff is still not necessarily made here but they do seem to source stuff from ethical suppliers

Lucy and Yak?

EdwinaMay · 25/05/2020 09:25

They do eat dogs in some areas of China unless that has been outlawed recently.
They eat horses in France.
So what.

Hairydogmummy · 25/05/2020 09:43

Omg @RacheyCat that was such a mean comment! How do you know how much people know about the political and cultural situation in China? You assume they're an idiot based on one comment? Would you like an essay on China from everyone before they comment? Or just easier to assume they're ignorant in a Daily Mail reader parochial type way and make a superior comment? I would suggest that you cruising threads about Boden looking for examples of people with what you consider to be ignorant attitudes that you can score points off, says more about what sort of person you are than them.

timeisnotaline · 25/05/2020 10:06

Gosh yes if you want to find ignorant people so you can have a go at them for it where else would you go but straight to mumsnet to find a thread about boden... sorry what? Where did that assumption come from?

RacheyCat · 25/05/2020 11:45

No need for me to assume anything, @Hairydogmummyairydog ! Unfortunately, I'd assumed the idiots were confining their racist stereotypes to AIBU, and allowing us to talk about Olaplex and eyebrows unsullied by that utter dross, but no! I was wrong! The idiots are everywhere!

You'll let shit about the Chinese eating dogs go unchallenged, but bravely call me out for rightly identifying the morons. Such a moral crusade you lead.

IDIOTS.
