JEans whilst pregnant - what to do

Did any of you manage to stay in your old jeans through pregnancy? Only I'm a bit scared of the maternity ones.

My jeans are hipster and the bump just sits on top of them at the moment. But then I'm only 18 weeks. I've got those bump bands - can I unbutton and use those all the way through, or would it be indecent?

Just dont leave your tum hanging out on display- I hate that!

MitfordSisters · 19/09/2007 22:09

No, hideous - I remember the ALl Saints and their constant naked tums with a shiver

Maternity jeans were useless ime and I mainly wore normal ones a size larger than normal, fastened with a hair elastic. If you're wearing longer mat tops anyway it doesn't really matter as noone will see.

When you get really big I have to say that over the bump trousers are really comfy.

trixymalixy · 19/09/2007 22:12

I managed to stay in my old jeans through pregnancy.

They were quite a low rise at the front so sat under my bump and were a bit on the loose side to begin with.

lemonaid · 19/09/2007 22:13

There are plenty of below-the-bump styles of jeans available, if that's what you want. Personally I like bump coverage with secret elastic tabs that I can let out, but then I prefer non-hipster jeans anyway when not pregnant.

CatIsSleepy · 19/09/2007 22:14

I bought some maternity jeans and hated them, found them very uncomfortable

I managed to wear one of my normal pairs for quite a while-til about 7 months, using a hairband to make the waist stretch further (not very elegant)

I also got some boycut jeans in a larger waist size than normal, which sat under my bump-those were fine til the last month or so when bump was huge and hanging really low

Wear a long enough top and you can do what you like, I think...

MitfordSisters · 19/09/2007 22:30

V heartening: I won't succumb just yet to the elastic ones. I fancy some carpenter ones (with the loop for your hammer)or boyfriend ones, but will try the regular styles in a bigger size.

I got some really nice ones from Red Herring in Debenhams. Not all elastic at the front but expanding side elastics. I lived in them when not at work and still wear them now with the sides done up. I never got big enough for full frontal elastic panels which just went saggy

MitfordSisters · 19/09/2007 22:37

hmmm...expandable...more advanced technology than I've come across so far in maternity jeans world - might try.

MitfordSisters, I have a pair of the Red Herring jeans in size 12 if you're interested. They're in very good condition as I didn't wear them very much (kept slipping down on me).

MitfordSisters · 19/09/2007 23:06

ARe they these ones:

these look really comfy

bookthief · 19/09/2007 23:13

No. They don't have jersey side panels. Basically they look like normal boot cut jeans from the outside but have adjustable elastic fastenings at each side on the inside.

I bought them last Summer so they must be discontinued or just not on the website.

purpleflower · 19/09/2007 23:17

i like these aswell

MitfordSisters · 19/09/2007 23:23

Soz bookthief and prettyflower, I think I've gone right off bootcut, or perhaps it is the thought of having to try on any more jeans at all that fills me with despair!

I'm going to wear the pre-preg ones until I can't zip them up anymore. think it's bedtimex

Mitford, that's what i did. i was loathe to buy maternity jeans so was going to wait until I no longer fitted in my normal jeans. In the end I didn't need to buy any maternity jeans.

I did have a pair of comfy stretchy black trousers from M&S for lounging about in though that were great.

missbumpy · 21/09/2007 12:36

I got some Topshop maternity jeans (I grew out of my normal jeans pretty early on ...I'm so jealous of all these people who wear their size 8 jeans throughout the pregnancy) and they've been really useful but I have to say that in the last few weeks I'm now 36 wks) they've started to feel a bit uncomfortable. They still fit but I just hate wearing anything with a waistband at the moment. It feels like it's really cutting in where the baby's head is if that makes sense ?

Gemy · 21/09/2007 13:50

I am a maternity jeans fan. Don't like the baggy bum you get with normal jeans in a bigger size. For me, it's all down to comfort and looking good as I don't like having to hitch jeans up every time I stand up or feeling the waist band cutting in. I have bought the Seraphine jeans that were rated most stylish by most magazines and they do look really good. I also have a pair of H&M boyfriend mat jeans with the full jersey bump (they are oh so comfy!) and these are for slouchy days.

I do have a pair of size 10 skinnies from topshop (not mat) and I do wear these for going out, with a empire line top and nice shoes but by the end of the evening, I am more than happy to get em off!

MaryJB · 21/09/2007 18:36

The bump band is good - use it later for covering your belly if you breastfeed - when you hoike your top up it won't show you wobbly bits!

Arabella B does nice under bump - so no massive panels to be scared of!

look here

empen · 21/09/2007 19:11

Jordan (Katie Price) quoted to say that she wore all her normal clothes through her recent pregnancy with hair bands to stretch the waist!!

The best thing I have found was from New Look for £3 - it is called a belly band. Basically just a band of material that you can wear to cover up the gap between top and trousers. (About 18inches deep) It means that you will never see the hair band or belly if the tops are a bit too short. It is in maternity clothes section of New Look - saw one on ebay the other day but ended now. Have not seen them anywhere else.

Would be really stright forward to make one I guess!

morningglory · 21/09/2007 19:29

Not all maternity jeans are horrible. I have Juicy Couture ones which I lived in in my first pregnancy. They are exactly like their normal jeans, just with an elastic panel in the front. Expensive, but worth it as I lived in them during my pregnancy, and 3 months afterwards. Seven also do maternity jeans which are quite nice/flattering. You can even get skinny maternity jeans now!

MitfordSisters · 21/09/2007 21:35

Thanks for the suggestions chaps - I'm liking the Arabella B carpenter ones - might get them.

Empen, did i buy a car seat off you recently?

spugs · 22/09/2007 17:41

new look do a pair of maternity jean for £12, materials not very thick but they fit really well and the bum is normal looking. i prefer styles that go under the bump. ive never been able to stay in my normal jeans as my arse and thighs get massive . if id been in my first pregnancy and knew id end up having 3 id have prob splashed out on an expensive pair as i live in them

empen · 23/09/2007 23:05

No, you did not buy a car seat from me, sorry
