Hair colour disaster, any advice?

So with the salons shut Mum decided to do a permanent home colour job on her 40% grey and natural brown hair, she bought a brown colour and claims she did everything it said on the box - she now has very dark brown roots and the rest is BLACK.

Will it fade naturally or should she try a colour remover or will this ruin her hair which is naturally dry/frizzy curly?
Any advice at all would be a great!

Oh dear, did she buy a dark brown? They always turn out a bit darker than the box suggests. It should fade a bit with repeated washing. I've never used a colour remover so cant advise on that

I’m not a hairdresser but former regular dark dye-r

If this is the first time her hair has been dyed a remover shouldn’t damage it too much, but it is likely to be lighter/have a slightly orange-red tinge

Ime dark dyes don’t really fade, it’s only really reds/blues/colours that do- use head and shoulders if she wants to try though

Thank you, no it's not the first time it's been coloured she regularly has root touch ups, she's very grey but only has a short curly style that's cut regularly so it hasn't been repeatedly coloured over and over but it's the first time she's done it at home.

She normally has it a shade or two lighter than her own colour but thought she'd go brown to prevent unwanted undertones maybe this is why it's so dark and possibly porous where it's naturally quite dry?

I don't know what shade she used just that it was meant to be brown and is black and she's very upset.
Also worried if she does anymore to it when the salons are open they won't want to touch it.

Your poor mum :( I have used fairy liquid in the past when a salon colour had turned out too dark. It did make a difference, but did nothing for the condition of my hair, so perhaps that with a load of conditioner? Repeated washing with head and shoulders also seems to help.

She could try a vitamin c treatment to fade the ends. Crush up vitamin c tablets and add the powder to white conditioner or shampoo and leave for a couple of hours. I had the same experience as your Mum and found this took the edge off the dead crow look. there are plenty of YouTube videos and it's much less damaging than using a colour remover which can be patchy and re-oxidise.

When I did this (Nice & Easy I'm looking at you Angry) I had to just let it grow out. It was painful though. In the end I balayaged the front sections of my hair to blend it slightly and grew it out. It took about 2 years of constantly adjusting the colour but I had long hair at the time.
