Intermittent fasting

Hope this is ok being posted here.

I've put on weight since lockdown began, no excuses I have been bloody lazy.

I hear good things about intermittent fasting and am wanting to try it.

Has anybody here done this? Would you mind sharing your experience and any pointers?

I'll be reading up today but personal experience would be most welcome Smile

I recommend gin stephens’ book, Delay Don’t Deny

Changingbackinamo · 20/05/2020 13:26

Hi all, I've been it for the past few days but have a couple of questions.

Are you supposed to feel ravenous hungry? Because I constantly am. I've cut out all snacks which made up the majority of my diet.

I eat between 12-8. An example of my daily intake now

I'll have a cup of tea when I wake up. Semi skimmed milk and 1 sugar.

I don't eat until 12, when I'll have a bowl of cereal of a sandwich.

I'll then have my dinner about 4

Then something light at 7.30, like fruit and greek yoghurt.

I've cut out fizzy drinks and am drinking lots and lots of water.

I'm just so hungry Confused

What am I doing wrong if anything?

Bowl of cereal or a sandwich that was supposed to say.

I really think you need to keep to skimmed if possible and cut out that sugar in you can. I'm not ravenous - up your protein - break your fast with eggs if you can. I've not been great so far this week and haven't been eating well in my 8 hour window but doing better today

Changingbackinamo · 20/05/2020 14:00

I'll switch to skimmed and eat more eggs, thank you.

I've reduced from 2 sugars to now 1 and will cut it out completely after 7 days. A few people have suggested to reduce gradually as opposed to immediately, so it's more sustainable.

For my lunch today I had a cheese sandwich with an orange and banana.. I'm still hungry Confused

I think it goes to show how reliant I become on snacking on rubbish.

I'm doing 16:8 and find it helps with juggling work and meal prep.

I fast until 11am and then finish after 7pm. Only water & herbal tea (no milk or sugar) between those hours.

Sometimes I have 3 meals but smaller or two fairly big meals a day. I've reduced the amount of snacking and basically full and no time for dessert in the evening ! 4lbs down in 3 weeks which is good weightloss for me

fungster · 20/05/2020 14:09

You're not eating enough fat, by a long way. IF is more effective (and MUCH easier) if you eat LCHF. A bowl of cereal is, nutritionally speaking, sugar-covered cardboard. (Much as I love a massive bowl of cornflakes with ice-cold whole milk). Same with bread and fruit - it's just sugar.

Eat more protein, eats lots more fat. Good luck!

trumpisaflump · 20/05/2020 14:25

I find 16:8 the best way for me to lose weight and maintain weight loss. I don't do anything fancy. I just have my dinner around 6pm then don't have anything else to eat until breakfast around 10 the following morning. I do have tea with semi skimmed milk during the fasting hours though and this has never stopped me losing weight. I'm a size 8. I also have IBS and the hours fasted really seem to help with stomach pain as I think it tests my gut.

Changingbackinamo · 20/05/2020 15:12

Could anybody give me some suggestions for LCHF foods to eat during my window that will stave off this hunger?

I've started to feel rubbish today, as if I have been starving myself all week. Very little energy.

It makes sense that this is happening because I haven't been eating the right things, just small portions of stuff that doesn't sustain me through a 16 hour fast.

yoghurt & berries
omelette
steamed veg
vegetable soup

Poppy146 · 20/05/2020 15:16

I'm having stuffed chicken, dauphinois potatoes and a side salad for my dinner today.

I'm going to eat the lot which I never did before starting 16:8.

I would usually eat half or under half, not want any more and then start snacking 1-2 hours later.

My relationship with food and eating habits definitely needed to be addressed Blush

Poppy146 · 20/05/2020 15:16

Thank you bluefox, noted Smile

MrsJamin · 20/05/2020 15:21

IF is just a way of getting a calorie deficit - if it works for you to skip breakfast then do it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ There's nothing magic about it. Not sure why you've posted in style and beauty, there are a bunch of losing weight forums.

FlowerArranger · 20/05/2020 15:25

Carrots are great for keeping hunger at bay.

Discoballs · 20/05/2020 15:26

I eat IF. I alternate skipping breakfast and skipping breakfast and lunch on weekdays. And don't IF on weekends.

I eat omelettes for lunch, with bacon and some veggies in (maybe mushrooms) and melt cheese on top. Or Parma ham, cheeses and pickles. Or chicken and bacon mayo.

I make dinners like fajita bowls without the wraps, steak green veg and garlic butter, chicken Caesar salad (no croutons).

I'm always really full and find IF really easy to do.

Changingbackinamo · 20/05/2020 15:30

MrsJamin

Because I find mumsnet helpful usually and I was posting for traffic.

Did you mean to come across as rude?

I'll ask MN to remove my post.

Thank you to the others who contributed.

There is a group called 16 8 over on the weight loss board - join that or ask mumsnet to move this thread there. A fave filling high fat meal for me is a salmon fillet, roasted asparagus, boiled egg and some avocado 🥑

Others are a chicken fillet with loads of roasted veg and feta

Somethingkindaoooo · 20/05/2020 15:43

Aw,don't go.
Honestly,it doesn't matter if you posted here.
I found it informative
😊

fungster · 20/05/2020 16:10

IF is just a way of getting a calorie deficit - if it works for you to skip breakfast then do it.

Not so, @MrsJamin. IF is modeled on the principles of insulin reduction - obesity is a hormonal rather than caloric imbalance.

@Changingbackinamo I can't recall if someone has already recommended Dr. Jason Fung; he has written "The Obesity Code" and "The Complete Guide to Fasting" and both are terrific resources.

Lelivre · 20/05/2020 18:27

I’m 16:8 low carb high protein moderate fat to be really slim I would need to calorie count as well but 16:8 is a real help.
