Bought a box dye- should I use it?!

I know I know, I should just leave it until the hairdresser reopens but hey, why not?! (Obviously I will need to do a patch test first so can't do it till tomorrow at the earliest)

My hair is just past shoulder length with a very grown out balayage, I last had it done just before Christmas I think! It doesn't look too bad as we knew I wouldn't have it done for ages just because I'm lazy!

I have in the past dyed my hair a bright copper (at a salon) and loved it, but didn't keep it for long. I have bought a box of Clairol nice and easy golden auburn, should I go for it? Will it wreck my hair? Will it look bizarre with my lighter ends and darker roots?

I had the same thoughts and just went for it! Mine has turned out okay! Why not try it if you feel as though it needs a freshen up. As long as you're not adding extra bleach to your hair, then colour shouldnt be too damaging or drying.

What colour is your natural hair/roots? I've never had luck with box dyes but anytime I've used one I've bought a semi permanent as it's not as harsh on the hair and gradually lightens/washes out.

First off - as well as your patch test (for sensitivities) do a Strand test too .
Find a portion of hair you can either separate off or if you can bear to, snip off (where it won't show)

See what the dye will do to your dyed and undyed hair .

Second - if you are planning a whole head dye - one box might not be enough.

Test first then if you're happy , buy a second box.

Good advice @70isaLimitNotaTarget thanks!

@Moonlite I'd say I'm naturally mouse (was always blonde as a child) there's more grey there than I was expecting now!

Can you let us know how it goes and post a pic of before and after please!?...I too have balayage and thought about dying mine , but will let you go first Wink

Clarabellawilliamson · 18/05/2020 21:39

Here you go @Monkeytapper I'm not overwhelmed with it. It has sorted out the roots, but I was expecting a more vibrant colour! I don't know if I didn't leave it on long enough on the ends, because they were so much lighter I didn't leave it as long. It's difficult to tell properly in this light- so will see what it looks like in day light!
It looks much more red in the photo, I think I would be happier if it looked like that!

Clarabellawilliamson · 18/05/2020 21:50

Looking at the pictures- it's definitely an improvement! It could do with a few inches chopping off too....

Doowop20 · 19/05/2020 06:25

I think we are months away from hairdressers opening
Even then the waiting lists will be long
So another 3 months of roots and re growth?
Box dye all the way ….

Mascotte · 19/05/2020 20:37

Looks good! Try the ponytail haircut: I just took the ends off mine and it's a big improvement
