Sorry for the length of this. I am only just 30 but my grey hairs are taking over and I’m absolutely miserable about it. I used to bleach but didn’t have the time to take care of it and the ends were breaking off so cut it short and dyed it brown to save it. However, even though I only used semi permanent dyes it went way darker than it was meant to and never washed out. So I have mid brown roots, darker mid section and then almost black ends. It is now also shoulder length. I hate it so much. I tried a Garnier olia at the weekend that’s supposed to lift by 2 levels to give me a lighter ombré, I didn’t expect it would be an even colour all over with the different amounts of previous colouring but I hate hate hate the “black”! It really didn’t work. Didn’t lighten at all. Even the roots went darker than they were meant to AND the greys hardly got covered. Please please help me! I’m so miserable and don’t know what to do!!

Oh also most of the times I’ve dyed my hair I only did my roots but it’s like my hair must be super porous or something? I don’t know. I just want to cry.

Because it's so porous, it has grabbed onto the hair A LOT. But in the same way, it will wash out really fast. I recommend washing it as much as possible with a cleansing shampoo (nothing that is made for coloured hair)

I definitely wouldn't use anything else on it for a few weeks

(I am a hairdresser by the way )

Oh thanks so much. But the ends of my hair only had semis on and have never washed out. In over a year...!! Would they wash out now? I tried colour remover as well, didn’t touch it. Cry

I think a lot of the dark will wash out, try a bit of washing up liquid (but don't get it all matted!)
Deep conditioning treatments will also remove a bit because they go into the hair

Rest it really nicely and then maybe your only option is bleach. But I would wait u til hairdressers are open for that!

You could try the Vitamin C & Shampoo mix, google it for the method, it may work & lift out any dye you have left in your hair & leave you with a base for you colour again. It is quite drying, so condition well afterwards. And leave the mix on for around an hour and a half - 2 hours.

I’ve done it several times & it’s worked well for me and sometimes not so great but it’s cheap (all you need it effervescent bit c tablets & some head & shoulders or other deep cleansing / dandruff shampoo) and clingfilm!

You can colour again straight away, but I would just use a semi, nothing permanent until you can get to the hairdressers & remember, because your hair will be on the dry side, the lengths will suck up the colour very quickly so will turn out darker than the roots. So choose a lighter shade than what you want. L’Oréal castings isn’t too bad, I have really really stubborn auburn roots to cover & castings doesn’t do a bad job in covering them. Hth.

Thanks guys. It’s frustrating because I try take really good care of my hair. Nothing but kerastase is usually allowed on it but I’ll brave it and try some clarifying shampoo!
