Why do I always look old and haggard when I put makeup on?

awesmum · 14/05/2020 13:12

Just that really. Whenever I put makeup on it acentuates the bags under my eyes, my wrinkle which aren't evident till I putt make up ok. But if I don't wear it my skin is uneven. And patchy with big eye bags. I am in my early 40’s, am frequently told I look a lot younger.
I have really dry skin. I have seen beautician's about what best to do and they suggest lots of different stuff which I get and it makes no difference.
Any suggestions?

Check out some youtube videos for make up. Leeor Alexandra has some useful videos. I am using nivea Q10 (night cream and day cream) at the moment, I find it to be a very good moisturizer.

LambDhansak · 14/05/2020 13:46

Do you use primer, setting spray, good creamy foundation, camoflage concealer? When your base is dry make up looks gray dull and cracked on top. I think you need a makeover with new products. Make up should enhance not hagger so something must be wrong.
Maybe if you post your products and routine we can spot the culprit?

Do you wear mascara on bottom lashes? Do you use black or dark eyeliners? They can eb harsh.

arinah · 14/05/2020 13:47

Following this thread as I have similar issues but I haven't even reached 30 😭 no matter how lightweight the product, it just looks awful on me.
@anthilda I've ordered the asda Q10 cream, which also has hyaluronic acid and rave reviews, so for £1.69 I'm excited to give it a go! If it's good then I'm also going to go for their vitamin c range as well.

CarolefeckinBaskin · 14/05/2020 13:48

Also stay away from powder or any matte foundations. They are not bags/wrinkle friendly :)

Shmithecat2 · 14/05/2020 13:49

Get your skincare regime sorted first. Lots of moisture!!

oohnicevase · 14/05/2020 13:54

Change to be cream and drink way more water . Foundation always goes on the cracks !

HelloDulling · 14/05/2020 13:57

If your skin is very dry, you need to change your skincare.

Thighmageddon · 14/05/2020 14:02

It's like others have said, your skincare routine that needs looking at first.

If your skin is dehydrated it can look terrible with makeup on.

What's your routine, skin type and products?

awesmum · 14/05/2020 14:21

I use Elizabeth Arden facial cleanser, olay cleanser & toner, Vitage Micro skin polish and age defense firming eye cream. Olay hydrating serum.
Benefit face primer.
Mii illuminating face base but it's so heavy and my pores are so obvious after using it. And my forehead just looks like I have painted crackle effect on me Confused
I don't use powder as it would make it worse.
I've used bb cream and it has the same effect.

Then I do use black eyeliner and mascara - not on my bottom lashes as they are so short, I think I have only about 3 of them too.
I have blonde hair blue eyes and fair skin.
With age my eyelids have dropped a bit.
I use brow gel.
I have the mii brushes and generic make up sponges. But it all just seems to seep into my huge pores and deep wrinkles which aren't there normally.

I use babyskin by maybeline as primer and it blurrs my pores. My pores got smaller when i used glycolic acid from superdrug and the ordinary products.

Hylauronic acid makes my skin so plump .. i jse the superdrug spray.

Switch to dark brown mascara and dark grey or brown eyeliner. Curl your eyelashes. Your eyes will still pop and be defined.

Charlotte tilbury, BobbibBrown and Lisa Eldridge have really good tutorials on youtube including for droopy or hooded eyelids which i too have.

Also are you using a beauty blender to apply in a pumping blotting way or your fingers? My fingers give a crap finish but beauty blender padded on my face gives a really smooth finish.. and i use rimmel to set my make up my face glows and has an airbrushed finish its called #insta fix and set rimmel spray.

Use creamy blusher. Colour in my cheeks helps me look alive and healthier.

DancingMia · 14/05/2020 15:14

Maybe your makeup base is a bit heavy even though it's illuminating? Try a lighter/dewier foundation? I find that foundation I love in the winter looks too heavy in spring/summer, so in summer I use the light/medium coverage foundations and more sparingly, but as I still have dark circles under my eyes which isn't covered as well by a lighter foundation, I use a colour correcting underage concealer applied with a small stiff blush under the eyes first.

But for me, nothing looks good on my skin unless I've had a good amount of sleep!

DancingMia · 14/05/2020 15:18

^^ re blusher, I really wish I could wear it more often but being over 45 now, when I have foundation, eye liner, mascara and lipstick on I find practically all blushers look unnatural on me (and bronzers look dirty) no matter what the formula or shade. I can wear a neutral shimmer highlighter on the cheekbones (not glitter, just illuminating) though which helps give the impression (ha!) of radiance. I like the Becca Champagne Pop one, just a touch.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 14/05/2020 15:27

It sounds like you’re not using the right skincare or makeup for your skin type

thedevilinablackdress · 14/05/2020 16:54

I find less is more in my 40s. Skincare, tinted moisturiser, light touch of concealer where needed, likewise very light powder if needed.

vengeancer · 14/05/2020 18:19

mid 40s too and I wear much, much less make-up wise as it ages me too. Less is definitely more.

LadyDoc1 · 14/05/2020 18:25

How about trying a light facial gradual tan and concentrating on cream blusher?
I love By Terry, great discounts on Allbeauty

Honestly changed my life all of the products you are using are so harsh and I don't see any moisturizer?

They do makeup too but your skincare routine appears to be the root cause.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 14/05/2020 18:37

Just to add to what's been said already. There are some good videos on youtube showing eye massage which helps with drainage and eye bags. If I remember to do it, I can actually feel my skin draining (TMI). Also, brown eyeliner round the outside third of your eye, and smudged a bit, looks softer than black eyeliner. I use foundation very sparingly, over a moisturising SPF base.

awesmum · 14/05/2020 18:46

Thanks everyone for the advice. Will be youtubing and buying more stuff to try.

SmileyClare · 14/05/2020 18:50

How about ditching the base and foundation?

Just a bit of concealer and tinted moisturiser, and your mascara.

Throughabushbackwards · 14/05/2020 18:57

I agree with SmileyClare. All is use is Clarins BB cream and mascara. Full coverage foundations age me far more.

Throughabushbackwards · 14/05/2020 18:58

Thighmageddon · 14/05/2020 18:59

Ok so I'm mid 50's and wear either Estée Lauder doublewear foundation and it doesn't sink in to any lines or look awful.

Am routine.
Gentle cleanse and flannel the cleanser off.
Vitamin C serum.
Spritz with a mist.
Hyaluronic acid.
Serum.
Moisturiser.
Eye cream.
Glossier futuredew if wearing makeup.

Pm routine.
Double cleanse, first with a balm, second with a gentle cleanser, flannel both off.
EITHER
Retinol.
Mist.
Hyaluronic acid.
Serum or Estée Lauder ANR.
Facial oil.
Moisturiser.
Retinol eye cream.

OR

Double cleanse as above.
Use a glycolic acid and nothing else as a treatment.
Eye cream.

This might not suit everyone and once used to it fairly quick.

However it's transformed my skin from being dehydrated and looking crap with foundation on, to looking like I have bareish skin when wearing DW.

Wolfgirrl · 14/05/2020 19:01

Do you drink enough water?

WafflesandPancakess · 14/05/2020 19:03

I have similar skin to yours and use body shop foundation with one of their bronzers. I just use my hands to put it on like a moisturiser as it’s so light. Personally with make up I think less is more. A good simple skincare routine (Nivea for me), lots of sleep, good healthy diet, drinking lots of water, no alcohol and factor 50 on sunny days.

I love bare minerals too if I wasn’t on a budget.
