Can’t find shampoo / conditioner that I like!

My hair is driving me mad at the moment, it’s just past my shoulders, quite thick and dry, has a tendency to go frizzy / pouffy. I was it every other day and dry and straighten it afterwards (decent hairdryer and GHD’s)

I just can’t seem to find a shampoo and conditioner that I get on with! I’ve tried all the usual brands like Pantene, elvive, Aussie etc... sometimes they work for a bit but at the moment nothing is making my hair nice. It’s too pouffy / not sitting nicely or smoothly iykwim.

Can anyone recommend anything? I ordered some Philip Kingsley conditioner that I had high hopes for but I’m not that impressed.

TIA!

I have thick, dry hair with a slight wave/curl and a tendency to frizz.

Sadly, I learnt a long time ago that no high street brand cuts it. I have to use salon quality products. I use L'oreal and KMS shampoos and conditioners.

It's also worth getting a really good treatment. I'm currently using a Redken one - roughly about once every 3-4 washes.

All of this keeps my hair nice on a day to day basis.

I recently also got an Innoluxe elixir and honestly, it's changed my life. My hair was in good condition before but since I started using this last year it's become incredibly soft. I love it.

To put in perspective - I have been looking after my skin equally religiously since I was a teenager. However, right now, money is tight - I'm using cheap face products but refuse to compromise on my hair products. You can get great high street skin care but, in my experience, nothing as good for hair.

Redken so soft is good for me. Also pureology in the purple bottle. Both those are not cheap though.

I've just bought tigi as I couldn't justify redken at the moment, the new one for coloured hair - it's called something oil and that's quite nice and even cheaper, OGX in the blue bottle or Palmers coconut oil one (often found in the afro section).

I find SLS free is best for my highlighted, dry, frizz.

I recently bought this after Mumsnet recommendations.

I was using Pantene and my hair was just awful. I have only used this twice so far and already my hair is shinier and softer so it may be worth a go.

I've had some success with this brand after someone recommended the 10 in 1 mask on this board - just bought shampoo and conditioner to try which is less spendy than kerstase which I always tend to go back too.

My friend has hair naturally like yours, OP (hers is a bit longer), but she gets it very swishy and shiny. She uses the OGX brand, she has the one in the brown bottles. You can buy it in Boots and some supermarkets.

I would also recommend a hair mask at least once a week, the L'Oréal Botanics range is often praised.

Do you live in a hard water area?
That’s the clincher for me, if I go on holiday to a soft water area my hair is lovely whatever I use!

A vinegar or soda water rinse helps if that’s part of the problem

Chochito · 13/05/2020 13:09

Good shout, slipperyeel, hard water can play havoc with your hair and leave it a bit, crusty. You can get a shower head attachment that softens the water, a vinegar rinse or clarifying shampoo will also work. Your hairdresser (when you get to see them again!) will be able to tell you if you have hard water build up on your hair.

Confused866 · 13/05/2020 14:50

Ooh thanks so much for all the suggestions I’m going to investigate all of these! I’m actually not sure if I live in a hard water area I’ll have to find out, had never thought about that!

Mine has been so much better since I started using conditioner first, rinse then shampoo.

emcero1 · 13/05/2020 16:17

I second the Tigi bedhead suggestion!

They do a few different ones - I recommend the red bottle, green bottle and pink bottle. I actually rotate between all 3, using the red one at the moment.

Get some without silicone, it'll change your frizzy life for the better

QuentinWinters · 13/05/2020 16:19

I use shea moisture 10-in-1 shampoo and would recommend. Then Garnier superfood conditioner banana and shea. Also great. My hair is also frizzy and puffy (well it isn't because I put effort into taming it, but it wants to be!)

melissasummerfield · 13/05/2020 16:20

I recommend ogx orchid oil , sounds like we have similar hair types too OP Smile

onestepat · 13/05/2020 16:24

I swear by redken shampoo and conditioner.

Esbm2015 · 13/05/2020 16:49

I agree with the OGX brand in the brown bottles. Found it to be very good, especially the conditioner. I also use the Everyday shampoo by Windle and Moodie along with their day and night cream and shine and smoothing oil which seem to give good results.

NewMama20 · 13/05/2020 16:53

Try sulphate free options. Definitely helped to ease the frizz for me. I'm also using lockdown as an opportunity to ditch the hairdryer and straighteners for a while and washing it less too. Not like I've got anywhere to go or anyone's going to see me! Grin
