Was anyone else... a Clothkits child? Do you think...

MeAndMyMonkey · 18/09/2007 19:58

...it was the Boden of its day, or something altogether much nicer?
Do you remember that there were no normal colours like 'red' and 'blue', but instead things like 'tomato' and 'teal'?
Was it just for lazy mums who couldn't be arsed to sew from scratch, or what?
And finally, is it still availaible, I am feeling rather nostalgic for my three-tiered, elephant print dress.

Or was it really just me and my sis who were forced to dress this way? Up until the age of 12, if I remember correctly!
And finally, sorry if this is wrongly placed in style; i have never started a thread before

I was a Clothkits child and will reminisce with you.

Oh, the printed corduroy dungaree dresses we wore!

And I still have my Cloth Kitty, with a load of clothes for her which would no doubt fetch a good amont on Ebay.

Nbg · 18/09/2007 20:01

There was a thread on this not so long ago IIRC.

I dont think you can get them anymore but there were lots of cloth kits children

startouchedtrinity · 18/09/2007 20:03

I remember Clothkits, but never actually posessed any - I think I was thinking of making something for myself at some point. Remember them being very folksy - never knew anyone that wore it though whereas here whole families are kitted out in head-to-toe Boden.

I would like to be a clothkits adult

MeAndMyMonkey · 18/09/2007 20:08

Ah, didn't realise Clothkits had already been done and dusted!
Ooh yes, printed, corduroy, dungaree, everything! It's all flooding back - in a good way.
Still have Cloth Kitty too, she is only wearing pants and vest though. Couldn't possibly ebay her, way too grotty! And I am too sentimental. Nor my Sacha dolls (that's probably a topic that's been covered here too I guess?).
Yes, it was very folksy, but kind of cute really. Now I think we should facebook a petition to Bring Clothkits Back, or sometrhing...

Folk print red corduroy dungarees. Wish I could get some for DS....

MeAndMyMonkey · 18/09/2007 20:18

My mum can sew too! but I'm thinking Clothkits would be perfect for people like me who are rubbish at actual sewing... didn't they send you the patterns cut out all ready to go, kind of thing?
Lol @Clothkits adult...me too...quite sweet really. But then, I do like clogs (probably the crocs of their day in the 70's!)

OP posts:
Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/09/2007 20:19

The patterns were printed on the cloth and you cut it out yourself, cutting round the right line for the size you needed.
Then later on they started doing pre-cut ones, I think. And pre-made even, but then they went bust, I believe.

MrsBadger · 18/09/2007 20:27

actually my mum was saying there's another compoany planning to fill its niche

will rummage

MeAndMyMonkey · 18/09/2007 20:27

Thanks 6in Kathy... it looks like you've been doing your own research into Clothkits! Am rather sad they went bust, but not completely surprised.
So maybe I should start the old Facebook campaign anyway?
Such gorgeous colours and fabrics though... weren't they? Why didn't my mum keep my old clothes for me? What was she thinking?!?

I remember Clothkits too. I remember they had a lovely colour called Kingfisher. Did they do ready made clothes too? I remember having their stuff and I find it hard to believe that my sewing-phobic mum made the clothes herself! I've got a funny feeling they had a shop in Lewes but I might have made that bit up.

hoxtonchick · 18/09/2007 20:29

i have a sacha doll with a clothkits dress .

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/09/2007 20:30

Was kingfisher a lovely greeny blue? Kingfisher colour I suppose. Duh. I had a tomato t-shirt dress.

Malaleche · 18/09/2007 20:34

I still remember gazing at myself in the mirror wearing a beautiful clothkits blue and white ankle length party dress that my mum made me when i was 7. And we had a lovely pair of dark red pyjamas with owls on. 30 years on and here in Spain I have a friend from Lewes who knew all the kids in the Clothkits catalogue!

MeAndMyMonkey · 18/09/2007 20:35

Oh bollox, have spilt my wine in my excitement at Mrs B's revelation!
A tomato T-shirt dress is sounder chic-er by the minute, I feel. Kingfisher, god, yes, of course. Fab.
Hoxton Chick - maybe we should get our dolls together for a clothes swap, or something? . Oddly my Sacha is wearing an outfit sewn by my mum. She lost her school uniform way back, sadly.

I was a Clothkits mum in the late 80s/early 90s until they sold up.

Sparkletastic · 18/09/2007 20:36

Yes shop was in Lewes! My mum lurved it and I was clad head to toe in Clothkits finest (as was my Sasha doll - this thread is spooky). Now there is a nice Lewes shop called Gossypium selling fab ethical cotton stuff for adults and kids - I think of it as Clothkits spiritual heir

wheelybug · 18/09/2007 20:36

oh yes a clothkits kid here too but then I was bought up near Lewes.

My Mum still has a clothkits kitty still waiting to be cut out which she is going to do to keep at their house for dd and her cousins.

MrsBadger · 18/09/2007 20:38

my Sacha is wearing a fetching green ensemble made, iirc, for my Brownie knitter's badge...

MeAndMyMonkey · 18/09/2007 20:43

Oh Malaleche, your outfit sounds beautiful! So cute staring at yourself in the mirror, loving it . Love the owl PJ thing too, i have a fondness for owls. Now that all of you have said there is a Lewes connection I'm seriously checking out house prices down there, have always loved that area.
ok, maybe just a day trip to that lovely shop then. Happy days...

Bluestocking · 18/09/2007 20:44

Us too - my sisters and I had matching print ensembles with tiered skirts and white cotton blouses trimmed with lace for my dad's best friend's wedding, and we always had Clothkits stripey pyjamas. I'm sure we had Clothkitties - I wonder if my mum still has them?

MeAndMyMonkey · 18/09/2007 20:46

Oh gawd, maybe we were all part of the same trippy hippy 70's family? That's kind of how Clothkits makes me feel, lazy hazy days of summer and all that..

OP posts:
pooka · 18/09/2007 20:49

Was talking about clothkits with my mother. She said they were too expensive for us, and being a pretty good seamstress, she made all of our clothes from scratch.
She aspired to clothkits.
I would love to have had some for when dd was little. They had really quirky colours and prints. And no boring pink/blue rules.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/09/2007 20:49

Do you remember how the catalogues were always photographed on the beach in completely the wrong season - freezing cold children modelling summer dresses etc?
