I’d like to get some new dining chairs and need some kitchen/dining room inspiration!

I think you’d be better off with chairs like the ones you linked to from IKEA, or something similar. The table legs are a bit of a problem, I think, too traditional, it would likely look wrong with eames style chairs. Ironically the modernness of the rest of the room works against it working, I think.

I really love the style of the Ikea ones but again wondered if they’re a bit too mid century in comparison to the table? Need a new table!

They at least go with the table, though. They’re not modern in the same way.

longcoffee · 12/05/2020 14:37

Bastard uncomfortable when you're sat on them all sodding day!

We have the farmhouse chairs, they were waxed, now I just clean them down with a brillo pad type cloth now and again. I do swap the cushion pads now and again to match changing colour schemes. Plain chairs like this do not date, scratch, chip. That is all I need, the pads, tablecloths, and accessories do the rest.

My pale beech table & set of 2 chairs were from Argos 15 years ago (!!) when I rented my first flat on my own.
Now I have a fairly big kitchen but live alone so only need the 2 chairs.

The chair seats were cream so I recovered them recently.

The kitchen floor needs replacing!!

PickAChew · 12/05/2020 17:09

We had those ikea chairs with the bamboo seats and they look smart but don't last very long. The back legs ended up coming away from the rest of the seat and we ended up screwing ugly brackets onto them to stop them from collapsing. We eked a whole year out of them before taking them to the tip.

I think Eames would be absolutely fine with what you have there. You could also paint the chairs you have - white, a colour, or a mix of colours.

I’m not the best person to ask as my dining chairs and table are 1960s G plan
Love a bit of retro

I have these with an old wooden table, they look great with grey seat pads I got from H&M

I actually really like your old chairs and if they’re good and sturdy you could give them a whole new lease of life and also change the look of your kitchen quite dramatically in the process just by painting them and the table legs.

However if you love the Eames chairs you could go ahead and get them, see how it works and if it doesn’t really sit well then you’ll just have to get a new table! 😄 Ikea do some good ones in wood that are a little more suited so you could probably get one that looks more modern for not all that much money, which would then go beautifully with the chairs and the kitchen.

CottonSock · 13/05/2020 09:48

I went for white Ikea ones, and a table cloth in vinal to hide pine table. Do try them.in store store though, as some not comfortable at all. I need cushions on mine as cold to sit on.

White eiffel tub chairs. Very comfortable and easy to wipe over

Ninkanink · 13/05/2020 10:14

We have an Eiffel tub chair which we use as an arm chair in the living room and yes, it is very comfortable.

User68953378975 · 13/05/2020 13:49

I’ve found some metallic tolix for a very good price... already painted the table legs, it’s a good size but horrible new pale pine...

How could I use a tablecloth without it looking a bit Cath Kidston? I want George Clark to come and design my kitchen!

Thanks everyone for all your advice btw

You could paint the table top grey. That would change the look quite dramatically.

CottonSock · 13/05/2020 13:57

I got this one. Can't be bothered with painting.. It's better than Orange pine!

I’ve found this old oak table locally for a good price... Would it look good with Tolix or Eames chairs? I wouldn’t want to put old shiny oak chairs with it as it could make it look a bit like my grandparents house...

@Ninkanink will look into doing that, it would be a good project.

@CottonSock lovely table cloth, going to have a look around for a greyish one

We have the Hendriksal chairs from Ikea, and I can vouch for their comfort as they are currently serving as my desk chair Grin

Ninkanink · 13/05/2020 14:28

I love the fluffy little top of the dog’s head in the photo! Just noticed it now.

Ninkanink · 13/05/2020 14:30

I actually think the duck egg blue might go nicely in your kitchen. If you go grey it might be too one-note (but it’s hard to tell without being in the room).

Italianmeringuebuttercream · 15/05/2020 21:25

I have the eames Eiffel ones, 4 regular and 2 tub ones. All white from vitra if I remember correctly? Had them for nearly 20 years and still look great (if a little scratched here and there!)
