Can anyone say anything about this necklace?

My mum gave me this. She said she got it from someone, and that it’s so well used it used to be gilded. There’s no sign of any gilt at all now - it’s a convincing shiny grey colour everywhere.

Has this style got a name? Or a period associated with it? Can we tell what it’s made of? If my mum is right it’s the ‘base metal’ that was used to make a ‘gold’ chain. I can hardly believe that though - who would have worn it through the shabby phase when the gilt was falling off?

In one sense, it’s quite boring. But in another sense I love it. I wear it quite a bit.

Can anyone say anything about this necklace?

I like that style of costume jewellery but they don't half pinch and pull hairs out at the nape of the neck when you're least expecting it!

@notredame you took the words right out of my mouth! I had one in the 80s but I couldn't wear it as it was too painful !

It’s a snake chain.
I love snake chains and have loads as both necklaces and bracelets.

If you wear it pretty much constantly it shouldn’t tarnish much, if at all.

I don’t find that mine pinch or catch hair at all but they are very fine/thin, maybe a thicker chain pulls more?
I also wear my bracelets quite tight so they don’t really move and I have a necklace spacer adapter thing that means necklaces don’t move much either.

Now I have the name, I’m reading up on the internet. According to unauthenticated sources, the snake chains were invented by the Victorians, who included lots of snake heads and other snake features in jewellery in the 1840s. Obviously very expensive until process for making them became automated. In time has become just another chain making method, association with jewellery that looks like snakes has been lost.

I have never seen that before - DartmoorChef would have appreciated one of those back in the 80s.

Try using silver cleaner on it. I've got a similar one from pandora and for some reason the silver tarnishes really easily.

I was about to say the same! I had one a while ago and got rid of it for this very reason.

I don’t have any silver polish in the house. I have got silver dip - shall I chuck it in? Any harm done if it isn’t silver?

I don't ever wear necklaces, but my sister had one like this in the1970 era. I have seen newer versions of them over the years,as people make and buy things that look nostalgic.

ginsparkles · 10/05/2020 17:03

I wouldn't know it, no. Snake chains will link. It looks lovely long.

BrandyTrap · 10/05/2020 17:29

Those epi stick things must have been invented by someone with experience of a snake chain pulling their neck hairs!
