Teenage boys & acne - what works?

Hi,
My oldest is 14 and starting to get acne. He has a corker of a spot on his nose. Huge red bump with no head, which has been there for ages.

He's been asking me for help, but I'm 50 with super dry skin, I'm clueless about acne.

I want to get him a good gentle face wash, maybe a BHA preventative thing for his nose & chin and maybe something topical for the big cystic bumps.

Any recommendations? Can't spend much these days unfortunately.

From an ex beauty therapist keep it simple. Too much will cause more oil to be produced and i have a 14 year old boy and trying to get him to do anything skin wise is a trial

  1. Face wash to use twice a day. Something like clean and clear or neutrogena - look for something with tea tree in
  2. spot cream to put on individual spots. We use a clearasil one that is good.

Buy a cleansing shower gel, nothing moisturizing. My son gets alot of spots on back and neck

Lastly make sure he doesn't pick or it will scar. Only squeeze it they have a head and use tissue around fingers to keep the area clean

Hope that helps

Xx

Paula’s Choice BHA Exfoliating Liquid is the best thing I’ve ever used.
I’m 42 and after struggling with acne for years, this is the only thing I’ve found has worked. It’s expensive - £30 on Amazon, but if it works, it’s worth it, in my opinion.

Have the GP prescribe Duac. It’s a once a day topical. You just put a thin layer on problem areas after you shower.
No need for face care routine of washing, toning, moisturising, etc etc. Perfect for teen boy.

Sam Farmer skincare for teenagers

Paulas Choice BHA.

And then after that, go to the GP.

Acnecide works an absolute treat. You can buy face wash and cream. Dd just uses the cream pm after washing with mild face wash (any type) and oil free moisturiser and her skin is perfect now.

Thanks everyone. I'd gotten him a good face wash, I think the Paulas Choice liquid might be a good start. Simpler the better I think.

I agree with @bigbananafeet12 about Acnecide (benzoyl peroxide). I’m 38 and still very prone to spots. I got the cream on prescription from the GP for the first tube but now get it for less from Pharmacy First online (no need for a prescription) as it works out cheaper. I put a tiny a dab on the spot(s) once a day (I do it before bed after washing my face) and use a light moisturiser in the morning as it can be drying. I’ve had acne since I was very young so I feel for your son and hope his skin doesn’t cause him too much grief.
