Does my 5 year old need a skin care routine?

I really don’t know 😳

I just wondered If I should be teaching my 5 and 7 year olds to cleanse their faces? I always apply sunscreen to their faces and they have regular baths and showers etc.

Do they need more? I think I was about 14 ish before I started a proper routine. My head says no probably not but I don’t know for sure.

Sorry if this is a daft question

Do they wash their faces in the morning and before bed?? Like with a face cloth? I’d say that is enough

goose1964 · 05/05/2020 10:30

It's not worth doing until puberty.

KedsAndTubeSocks · 05/05/2020 10:31

Yes they need to wash their faces regularly.

YouJustDoYou · 05/05/2020 10:33

Well they obviously need to wash but they won't need a "routine" until puberty

ThatBitch · 05/05/2020 10:39

My 7yo gets sore cracked skin on her face if she doesn't wash her face with gentle wash morning and night then apply Aveeno or lush moisturiser. We've tried everything but if she misses just once she wakes up with flaky dry skin which cracks and becomes sore very quickly. She also uses Vaseline for her lips.

Teaching good hygiene, wash with clean flannel, gentle wash, rinse well and dry on clean towel, little light moisturiser if needed surely isn't a bad thing?

Hedgehog44 · 05/05/2020 10:46

Soap and water is fine!!!!

MikeUniformMike · 05/05/2020 11:22

Teach them how to wash properly, and you could encourage them to use sunscreen.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 05/05/2020 12:00

They just need to wash their faces properly. Especially after SPF.

My 10 year old uses CeraVe hydrating cleanser because it’s gentle, cheap and in a pump bottle.

browzingss · 05/05/2020 12:02

I think they should wash their faces daily, it’s unclear from your post whether that’s the case

TheDIsiilusionedAnarchist · 05/05/2020 12:14

Well at the age of 39, I still don’t have a skincare routine (where do you all find the time?) so I would say no.

Fromthebirdsnest · 05/05/2020 12:15

I don't think they need a skincare routine 😕 , my children wash there faces and brush there teeth in the morning then use a child s farm moisturizer or sunscreen in the summer and lipbalm then at night they shower and again use moisturizer all over and lipbalm (they all get dry lips if they don't)... If you mean a cleanser, toner type routine then absolutely not until 11-13 depending on development and then I'd be investing in gentle skin care preferably recommended by a dermatologist or by a facialist after a teen facial x

Duchessofealing · 05/05/2020 13:53

Mine wipe their faces with a damp flannel morning and night then put child’s farm moisturiser on and then suncream for the day. I did pretty much the same from age 7 but with no suncream (80s child) and body shop rose water and vitamin E moisturiser. It does no harm and will hopefully make a teenage routine easier for them.

Love51 · 05/05/2020 18:05

Surely you look at your child's skin and think 'this child needs skincare' or, 'nope, all good here'. I've got one that is irritated by everything (skin wise, she's reasonably tolerant personality wise) and one that basically just needs to wash when they're mucky. So the one with bad skin gets me vetting everything that goes in the bath, follows by dermatologist cream, the other can wash in any old cheap stuff with a cartoon on the front. Its one of those things that doesn't need to be an issue until it is!

Oly4 · 07/05/2020 22:49

What? They are children. Soapy flannel in the bath is fine

ShambalaHambala · 07/05/2020 22:58

Careful if you're putting SPF on every day. Might be worth having them take vit d.

Flippinfurloughed · 07/05/2020 23:01

Bloody Nora. I’m in awe - I can just about get my DS to wash his hands after going to the loo, and that took a global pandemic! I seriously need to up my game Blush

TerrorWig · 07/05/2020 23:18

No.

I make mine use suncream in the summer, they wash their faces in the shower (every couple of days) but other than that only when they've got food everywhere.

WinWinnieTheWay · 07/05/2020 23:19

Just water and a clean cloth is more than enough.

bluebluezoo · 07/05/2020 23:26

I’ve never had a “skincare routine”.

What do you mean? Specific cleanser, toner and moisturise type thing?

What’s wrong with a wash while in the bath or shower?

Mine don’t even wash every day. I chuck them in the bath if we’ve used sunscreen or it’s been a particularly mucky day, but too much washing makes their skin sore so we restrict to every couple of nights.

Rosieposy4 · 07/05/2020 23:28

I’m 55, I still don’t have a skincare routine 😳

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 07/05/2020 23:33

Mine just wash in the shower. They don't do this every day....
Surely that's better even as teens than gettting into stripping the face of oils/replacing them?

I honestly wasn't going to suggest anything to my nearly teen - the longer they keep away from it the better??(alongside dying hair etc...)
