Blue shampoo for brunette hair

My natural hair colour is a medium- dark ashy brown. Due to the increasing number of greys coming through I’ve been having it coloured for the past 2 years to be as close to my natural shade as possible. This has been giving good results but it’s now more than three months since my last colour. I can cope with the greys coming through ( in fact I’m considering stopping the colouring and letting nature take its course and that’s another issue ) but due to the fading of the dye, and probably the sun, the coloured part of my hair is developing very red tones which are very obvious compared to the roots. I’ve seen ‘blue’ toning shampoos aimed at brunettes to counteract this but they all seem to be the high end pricy shampoos. Has any one used them and do they work to take the colour more ashy again and are they worth the money? And does anyone have any recommendations as to which ones to try?

Hi your hair colour sounds very like mine, I've tried lots of blue shampoo's & by far the best is fanola. I leave it on for maybe 10 mins once a week & the red tones are much less noticable.

A friend of mine uses the Charles Worthington Blue Shampoo. I thought she'd had her hair coloured. It's very potent (she forgot to use gloves once and it took a lot of scrubbing).

Theres a Redken blue shampoo for brunettes. My only problem with it is that youre supposed to leave it on for a few mins. Got no time for that

Thanks for the replies so far .Redkin was one of the ones I’d seen but I’ll have a look at the fanola one too.

The L'Oréal one is actually really good, my blonde hair looks like it's had a blue rinse when I've used it

Imtoooldforallthis · 05/05/2020 06:33

Fanola is brilliant, only used on blonde hair though.

damnthatanxiety · 05/05/2020 06:40

Family definitely. Ugly af bottle but professional levels of pigment

damnthatanxiety · 05/05/2020 06:40

Fanola not family

I bought Fudge blue shampoo and conditioner for my reddy brown hair. My sister is a hairdresser and she advised me to apply it to my dry hair and leave it on for half an hour before washing it off, and it really worked wonders, the red tones were much less intense. I do this once every two weeks or so. It smells absolutely lovely too. Only thing I would say is use gloves or you will stain your hands blue!

Another vita for Fanola! I got mine on amazon. They do a purple and a blue and are brilliant!

sarahc336 · 05/05/2020 07:30

Fudge do a purple one and I feel it works well on brunette hair, it's advertised for blondes though but takes the yellow/orange tones out of brunette hair if it's been coloured with warm colours in e past x

MooMinCow · 05/05/2020 08:17

I’ve tried the Worthington shampoo and it’s OK but it stains my scalp if I leave it to work as instructed (so I usually apply it to dry hair and avoid the scalp, then leave for 5 mins before shampooing out)

The Fanola looks good... on amazon I can see the regular shampoo and and extra blue pigment one - which is the best?

JessicaDay · 05/05/2020 13:35

You could try Josh Wood Colour Gloss. It’s a timing treatment mask rather than a shampoo. There is a blue toned one for brunettes and a lilac blue one for blondes.

browzingss · 05/05/2020 14:09

I use matrix brass off, it’s amazing.

However it is more purple than blue though -
I have blonde highlights on my brunette hair so a blue-purple shampoo is fine for me. But for you, a product with a higher blue pigment - or even green shampoo - might suit your needs better. Purple counteracts yellow, blue counteracts orange, and green counteracts red which seems to be your concern.

Here is more info on green shampoo, it works better for dark hair. There’s a before and after too.

With blue shampoo, there’s a spectrum of shades on the market.

Standinguptononsense · 05/05/2020 14:14

I used the fanola purple one and its fab although had a tendency to dry hair out. Aveda do a blue one which is lovely and less potent!

MolotovMocktail · 05/05/2020 17:14

Fanola fan here too on dyed brunette hair. I leave it on for 10 mins, do it once or twice a fortnight usually.

princessbear80 · 05/05/2020 19:44

Another Fanola blue fan here. My hair is exactly as you’ve described and does the job. If I use it more than once a week it dries my hair out, but once a week is enough anyway.

Ski37 · 07/05/2020 17:47

I went for the Redken one in the end as I’ve used their volume shampoo before and quite liked it and used it for the first time this afternoon. Not sure I can see any difference at the moment but next time I will try the advice of one of the pp’s above and try it on dry hair. The good news is it smells nice and hasn’t seemed to dry my hair out. I will also have a look for the Josh Wood colour gloss.
