I cut my own hair

I have very long hair and usually get it trimmed every 8 weeks but do have hairdressing scissors at home that I use on my fringe around the 4 week mark.

I was due a trim on 24th March - the day after lockdown but obviously the hairdressers was closed down.

I looked up on youtube how to cut it. After washing, I put it neatly in two ponytails and trimmed about a centimetre off the ends with the fingers off my other hand holding the end of the ponytail and then did my fringe.

I'm actually really pleased with it and have saved myself around £35. I might carry on this way!

Please post a link to the YouTube video you used. I’ve googled loads but I’m scared.
I was due for a haircut when social distancing was introduced so now I’m desperate.

I really need a trim, I have so many split ends Sad

Yallreadyforthis · 04/05/2020 20:50

Watching with interest....

Stabbitha · 04/05/2020 20:55

I always cut my own hair. I did it your way forest to get the length and then do the front pony method afterwards for the layers.

Rocaille · 04/05/2020 21:08

Oh, this sounds great! I really want to try cutting my own hair.

Which video did you follow?

Greeneggsandham5 · 04/05/2020 21:33

Can I ask, did you cut the ponytails straight across or do you have to angle the cut?

Does your method make your hair a straight line at the back or does it give a V shaped hairline? Thank you!

AvocadoPrime · 04/05/2020 21:44

I always cut my hair after many a bad visit to the hairdressers. I have two different go to cuts. One for a trim and one that's more of a cut that adds layers. If it ever needs freshening up I'll just dust the split ends. Saves me money and tears :)

PseudoCream02 · 05/05/2020 07:29

I watched a youtube video on how to cut the split ends out of your hair, rather than a haircut. I haven't tried it yet but the method takes off the bare minimum to neaten up and keep it healthy. Will attempt this today, wish me luck!

I watched about 3 videos - I do think though you should do it wet ideally

but there are tons on there - the 2nd video I thought was better although in Spanish I think (which I don't speak) but followed the video - I just thought the latter did a better job. There are tons of videos on youtube though - obviously I searched for long hair.

I already colour my own roots.

I am either going to do it myself permanently or more likely go to the hairdresser every 6 months and do it myself in between times.

Sorry to any hairdressers on here but I also find I waste alot of time driving to the salon, waiting around etc etc I am out of the house for a couple of hours so my diy session took me about 15 minutes including the shampoo, condition & trim. I am not into the whole "experience" thing at a salon.

Less is more - don't take too much off to begin with as you can obviously always take off more and it will grow.

Finally if you have a fringe, it is recommended to trim this dry as it shrinks a bit when it dries so you might end up with it too short if you do it wet and all hairdressers I have been to do it wet.

Thanks, OP - I'm definitely going to try this. Feeling very excited about all the money I could save!

PseudoCream, let us know how the split-end tidy up goes. Also, would you mind linking to the video you watched?

PilatesPeach · 05/05/2020 16:16

Just to clarify, I only did my ends - just a centimetre.

Update: I did this too! I followed the videos the OP posted and it looks good!

Chavvysexponds · 10/05/2020 13:37

I've just done this, took an inch off the bottom.

Haven't dried it yet, so am yet to see if it looks shite.

Chavvysexponds · 10/05/2020 16:18

I've dried it and I'm so fucking pleased with it! I did the ponytail under the chin one.

I think it's slightly shorter on 1 side but fuck it, it feels so much better and the split ends are gone!

Rocaille · 11/05/2020 02:37

I did the one where you snip each side separately. Wore a stripy top so I could check whether it was even!

It's ever so slightly tapered at the back, but I don't mind that at all: actually I prefer it to straight across, which is what it was before. I'm really pleased with it!!

catanddog · 13/05/2020 16:03

Thank you so much OP, I did this earlier today (under the chin one) and am thrilled, worked a treat!
