Do you think it's possible to look really well groomed if you have curly or wavy hair?

Or does your hair need to be a bit more tamed before you really look groomed?

Groomed curls....can be done if you have a) products - serum/mousse b) plenty of time to scrunch dry very slowly on low heat. I used to do this a lot pre-baby, but now mostly scrunch and run = mad and unkempt! Dh prefers it straight but I think it looks boring - and I don't feel myself with straightened hair anyway.

sallysparrow · 17/09/2007 21:00

Isnt it funny how you always want the hair you havent got?

Mine is curly but fine, and worse still - grey - so it is never the same two days running.

I would love to have thick strong pre-raphaelite type curls - I wouldnt dream of using straightners then!

berolina · 17/09/2007 21:04

I have shoulder length curly mess and am not the type to spend hours on it. I just smear a bit of Frizz Ease through it after washing it or wetting it slightly. It (usually) doesn't look groomed, no way, but it often looks nice, sometimes very nice indeed.

Nightynight · 17/09/2007 21:22

Grace Kelly didnt do that badly either.

sallysparrow · 17/09/2007 21:42

I cant picture Grace kelly with anything except a very sleek chignon?

MrsFogi · 17/09/2007 21:50

I never think of Grace Kelly as having curly hair? Are there any fabulous/gorgeous people with curly or wavy hair?

Nicole Kidman sometimes

fishie · 17/09/2007 22:07

nah nic's hair has been tortured. nobody since 1988 that i can think of. flashdance. fame. madonna. o dear.

a lot of those serums have silicon in, which is bad news for dry hair. daniel galvin one is water based, much better.

Drusilla · 17/09/2007 22:10

I have v wolly hair - couldn't go out with it loose in damp weather, early mornings or evenings and was no good at straighteners so last year had it all chopped off in very short bob (I'm now known as Annie Lennox...) but I miss my hair. I think the obsessionw ith straight hair is starting to fade so I'm considering growing it and letting it do it''s own thing instead of trying to tame it. I'm unable to choose between feeling a bit manly or just plain scruffy...

bettythebuilder · 17/09/2007 22:11

dh looks bemused at my hair gadgets, as I have a hot brush curler and straighteners!

I'm not saying it looks 'groomed' but it's tons better when I use the hot brush to define the curls (desperate attempt to combat frizz) then straighten the top and fringe.

Of course, this all goes @rse-up if there is the slightest bit of moisture in the air, when I look like Stig of the Dump

tyaca · 17/09/2007 23:59

its do-able, a couple of decent hair dressers have taught me fab blow dry techniques - both of which eradicate frizz.

for fourteen months, i was getting my uber curly mop chemically straightened with japense systems (yuko and another i can't remeber), was fun for a while, but v expensive. not perfect, but i did feel more groomed (tho i had to use straighteners too to get the best effect - still took a lot of time)

BUT - now i can't imagine not being my curly self, keep it long, touseled and almost always up! good colour really helps as does said drying techniques. i have a semi fringe cut in which i always blow dry semi straight and the smoothness it gives round face and crown makes a big dif

tyaca · 18/09/2007 00:04

betty builder - am with you there. tong the curls smoother (when straight haired girls do this, it just drops) and get a cuts that lets you blow dry crown and fringe - and lo! almost look employable

tyaca · 18/09/2007 00:06

i'll stop posting in a sec, promise,

but bumble and bumble's styling creme is a must

and i'm with the poster who raved about aussie 3 min miracle

hellish · 18/09/2007 02:13

Having said I'll never look groomed with curly hair, I wouldn't swap. I have grown into my hair with age and learnt how best to handle it (LEAVE IT ALONE). Embrace tangles, they ARE meant to be there..

leo1978 · 18/09/2007 09:15

Yes - Bumble and Bumble! Their products are bloody brilliant. I find the secret for groomed looking curly hair is wash it, don't brush it, twizzle it in your fingers, add product and let it dry naturally. When dry I sometimes put a little conditioner on it.

stepfordwife · 18/09/2007 09:18

hey mrsf..who wants to look groomed when you can look wild, sexy and gorgeous, eh? eh?.....

stepfordwife · 18/09/2007 09:18

...on a good day anyhow. on a bad day...think brillo pad

oliveoil · 18/09/2007 10:02

yes

I have naturally wavy hair and when I leave it to dry it goes curly

use Frizz Ease stuff, will link to magic potions

hang on...

oliveoil · 18/09/2007 10:05

or any of the Frizz Ease stuff tbh

they do one called Miraculous Recovery as well, cream that I put on wet hair and leave to dry

MuffinMclay · 18/09/2007 10:05

I'm sure it is possible if you have the skill and/or inclination these things, but I certainly have never managed it!

FrogPrincess · 18/09/2007 10:12

I have come to love my wavy hair (after years of wishing it was straight), I do think the key is finding the right hairdresser though. I wash my hair every morning (plenty of conditioner) and half dry it (so no frizz) and it's good enough for me.

multitasker · 18/09/2007 10:13

I think curls are great! I have no problem getting up a bit earlier to wash my hair - if it is fresh the curls look great and I feel tidy for the day - most women I know would love to have curls, I don't colour it and go to a good hairdresser about 4 times a year so my only real expense is on good products. I've been using pantene with a L'oreal curl cream, sadly it seems to have been discontinued so will have to start looking for alternatives - will check out Bumble & bumble. I've ahd it straightened a few times - doesn't look right and dh doesn't like it. Stick with what you've got

bettythebuilder · 18/09/2007 10:52

agree with hellish and multitasker- I'm so much happier with my hair now I've stopped fighting nature. I can't believe how many hours in the past I've spent in a battle of wills with my hair to get it into a straight bob. What was I thinking?!

Fizz ease just does not work for me. I actually makes my hair more frizzy. I suspect I apply it incorrectly.
