Love Lucy & Yak dungarees BUT...

Starfish83 · 03/05/2020 09:46

As the title says - however, I have a black pair that have faded something terrible and a burgundy pair that have shrunk after a couple of washes.

So...a few questions:

  • is it possible to re-dye the black ones black?!
  • can I do anything about the shrunken ones?
  • could anyone please recommend any other businesses that sell fantastic dungarees (that, hopefully, I won’t encounter the above problems with?!)

Thank you! x

Should be possible to re dye, I’ve done it with jeans and pants. What are they made of?

Starfish83 · 03/05/2020 10:25

Thanks for your reply, @GreyishDays - they’re 100% cotton.

When I dyed mine, they shrunk a little so be careful.

Have you seen Run and Fly dungarees?

GreyishDays · 03/05/2020 10:39

If you don’t wash them hotter than you normally do then I can’t see how dying them would shrink them?
Dylon machine dye should do a good job on them.

My favourite dungarees are from Kit And Kaboodle .

I like the way the pockets are set into a horizontal seam near the waist.

They say one size . I am a16 and they are fine . HERE

The washing machine dye works at 30 degrees, so won't shrink your jeans.

Thanks @smeerf and @Trumpton - some lovely dungas here! 😍

There is a shop in Manchester called Thunder egg, they have a huge range of lucy and yak style dungarees. They do have an online store too.

Tesco have a few pairs of this style of dungaree in at the moment. I had having a look at them the other day but I really don’t think I could pull off dungarees these days.

smeerf · 04/05/2020 16:37

Sorry, didn't realise I wouldn't be believed about the shrinkage and would have to provide evidence? I have 8 pairs of L&Y, the only pair that fits smaller is the pair I dyed and a pair I bought second hand. I'm a member of quite a few L&Y fan pages on FB, it's common knowledge that they are delicate, shrink/get damaged very easily and lovely as they are, they're not fantastic quality.

I recommend the FB page Sustainable Fashion Dungarees Etc. Buy Sell Chat for loads of different brands, honest opinions by people who actually own the dungarees.

ofwarren · 04/05/2020 16:54

I prefer Run & Fly. Much more hard wearing and don't shrink.

MikeUniformMike · 04/05/2020 18:59

I pulled a face at the Tesco pp, but I have some short denim F&F dungarees from a few summers ago and I always get complimented on them. I wear them a lot and am older than 45.

MikeUniformMike · 04/05/2020 19:02

@Starfish83, I would sell the shrunken ones.

TinkerPony · 05/05/2020 01:48

Or shorten the shrunken one into shorts or skirt dunagree if it the lenght affected

MikeUniformMike · 05/05/2020 12:04

You can buy something to revitalise black clothes in the washing machine. I think it is dylon brilliant black. I haven't tried it.

GatherlyGal · 05/05/2020 15:40

Dying can shrink fabric. That's why if you buy different colour bras in the same size black is often a bit smaller than white.

OneOfTheGrundys · 05/05/2020 18:52

Mine didn’t wash well either which was a shame as I love them. Liking these links!

ToManderleyAgain · 05/05/2020 18:56

I’ve bought a lovely pair from Finisterre. They were last season so not the ones showing on the website now, but generally I’ve found Finisterre to be great quality. finisterre.com/collections/womens-dresses-skirts

Tryingtogetitright · 05/05/2020 20:11

That's really interesting GatherlyGal... I bought three identical bras before lockdown in different colours and the black one is tighter than the other two (navy and nude)...

I have a pair of the Easton's and though I hate to admit it, they weren't a great buy. The cordoroy is extra thick which is great in the winter but the downsize is that it rips something chronic as it's so soft.

They actually ripped on the crotch within two wears, and I got a partial refund and got them repaired here. But then they ripped again in 3 places within another couple of months. The crotch again, and at both side buttons. I can't be arsed repairing them again tbh. Sad

I now have the Originals and they are different cordoroy and seem a bit better. But I'm afraid to wash them!
