Fungal toe nail infection

fungalinthejungle · 30/04/2020 18:12

This makes me feel neither stylish nor beautiful but I have a fungal toe nail infection.

I got told by a chiropodist right before lockdown - I have curanail but laser treatment and drugs were mentioned.

Has any one had an infection and successful gotten rid of it quickly? And if so, how?

Thank you, I feel awfully gross.

Tea tree oil, takes a while as it has to grow out but paint it on the base of the nail every day, worked great.

Fluora · 30/04/2020 18:47

I had success with fairly brutal filing of the surface of the nail followed by rubbing in of tea tree oil with cotton wool.

JollyGiraffe12 · 30/04/2020 19:28

Can you get anything medicated from an online doctor?

AuntieMarys · 30/04/2020 19:32

My podiatrist used the lacuna method on me...drilling little holes into the nail. I have to put anti fungal spray in the holes every day for 20 weeks. 6 weeks to go and it's looking better.

OneOfTheGrundys · 30/04/2020 21:27

The pills can have some intense side effects-kidney problems etc. I’d stick with localised and topical treatments if you can.

NothingIsWrong · 30/04/2020 21:28

I took pills - terbinafine - for 6 months but I had to have kidney function tests as well. It had spread to pretty much all of my toenails before I got it under control. It's never come back though.

RNBrie · 30/04/2020 21:29

I used Scholl nail treatment every day but it took over a year. Looks perfect now though (had been infected for 5 or 6 years)

wonkytonkwoman · 30/04/2020 21:32

I've been using Curanail for about 9 months. GP was very reluctant to px the pills until I'd given the topical treatment a good go. It's clearing very slowly but if it isn't gone in 3 months I'm going back to the doctor .

fiorentina · 30/04/2020 21:37

I used oregano oil and tea tree oil. It seemed to work well and pretty quickly.

Ilovefriday · 30/04/2020 21:39

I agree with PPs suggesting tea tree oil. It really worked for me but you have to keep doing it and it takes ages to wait for the toe nail to grow out.

ooonicorn · 30/04/2020 21:44

Dr nails from amazon. Amazing stuff but you need a good 3-4 weeks of it

Kubo · 30/04/2020 21:48

You can’t get rid of it quickly. All the treatments stop the infection spreading while you wait for the nail to grow out. It’ll take 6-12 months.

No GP will prescribe oral medication for one unsightly infected toenail.

TigerDroveAgain · 30/04/2020 22:09

My GP told me they are not prescribing terbafine even privately. I’ve not found any solution to this but I do tend to forget to put the stuff on so do a couple of weeks religiously then forget

user1494055864 · 30/04/2020 22:10

Nailner painted on twice a day worked really well for me.

Hopethiswilldo · 30/04/2020 22:24

I was prescribed terbinafine and ended up with pityriasis rosea... horrible drug.

Banaltra · 30/04/2020 22:47

Avoid terbinafine. As PPs have mentioned it requires monitoring blood tests and will still take ages. File and paint with either over the counter stuff or tea tree oil. Avoid spreading to other nails and do not use nail polish.

user246854 · 01/05/2020 00:01

I've been getting results with vicks, my nail on big toe was black and like upside down V shape that used to really push against my shoes and even made a hole in one pair.

Rubbing vicks in over last 2 weeks has really helped my nail is now flattened and blackness is going

I’ve had it years and tried all sorts of things without success. Doctor refused to prescribe anything. Good luck.

starsinyourpies · 01/05/2020 11:58

I tried all the over the counter stuff, no results. Eventually has Terbinafine from the doctor. Totally 'nailed' it!

XingMing · 01/05/2020 15:49

The laser treatment didn't work on my DH, and the doctor repeated the course for free, without success.

fungalinthejungle · 01/05/2020 16:13

Thanks all!

I'm going to give vicks a try along with curanail for now.

Reluctant to try the hard medication but if laser (it's expensive) isn't guaranteed to work I might have to.

The chiropodist things it's on all toes but it's quite mild, I can't really see anything there at the moment so fingers crossed I can keep it that way!

I had it on all my fingernails. It was disgusting. I treated it twice daily with neat peroxide and Vicks plus regular buffing for 5 months and thought it was gone so I painted my nails. It was back within 10 days. I’ve gone back to the treatment for 3 months and it’s clear again but I’m going to carry on treating it for a few more months.

If you clip your nails clean the clippers well afterwards and throw files/buffers away after use.

BattenbergtheHatches · 01/05/2020 16:50

My DD who is 10 has this on both her big toes. Is tea tree oil safe to use on her do you think? Perhaps diluted in a carrier oil?

Tillytess · 01/05/2020 17:48

My brother has had this for years, tried all sorts, tea tree oil etc etc. Been advised by GP there is no definitive cure. However, my athletes foot (similar but less hard to shift condition perhaps?) Has cleared up and I'm convinced its down to new shower gel I've been using, Aveeno, the one with honey and yoghurt in. He has started using this also and thinks it is helping...

Alsohuman · 01/05/2020 20:00

I’ve got it on one toenail, I just paint over it. Out of sight, out of mind.
