Would you bleach your own hair ?

I get backcombed highlights and it's been around 2 months now since I've had them done.
My roots are grey now and I'm desperate.
How would I do my own highlights ?
Is it difficult ?

Unless you are quite experienced using bleach and are confident I wouldn’t touch it. If you mess it up you could end up damaging your hair so much it snaps off in places.

More than likely your hair will turn yellow where you bleach it and you will also need to get a toner to match the shade you already have in your hair, that is provided you actually lift your hair enough to add a toner.

You need to be careful not to overlap too much on the already lightened strands (this is where the risk for breakage is).

If you do mess it up it will be expensive to fix as hairdressers generally charge more for a colour correction than standard highlights.

That said I have dyed my hair blonde at home in the past and it was a long process. I tend to be happy to give most hair related things a go. I would be iffy about topping up highlights similar to yours as it’s a more precise thing than an all over colour or bleach.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 30/04/2020 14:29

I have done in the past and it turned out really well. But the second time didn’t turn out so well as it was trickier to match up the highlights with the first lot so there was too much and it looked patchy.

But tbh Op from your photo your hair doesn’t look like it needs done.

Northernsoullover · 30/04/2020 14:33

That is NOT a bad roots situation. It may feel like it to you but given the potential for disaster I would tolerate them. Mine are the same. Loads of grey coming through and a good two inches of root. But its not as bad as if it were a solid colour growing out so I'm leaving it.

WickedlyPetite · 30/04/2020 14:35

The only way I'd put bleach on my own hair would be if I was quite prepared to shave it all off if it all went horribly wrong.... although if it does all go horribly wrong you won't need to worry about shaving it as it'll all snap off by itself anyway.

hannah1992 · 30/04/2020 14:50

As a qualified hairdresser, please dont bleach your own hair.

Bleach is very complicated to use, a few minutes too long and your hair will break. Also, you will have to do the roots first, then reopend foils and do the mid lengths and ends. I would be fine doing this to the front of my head but the back would look a mess.

To be honest though it would be more the breakage that would concern me. It can damage to the point of the hair just coming away in the hairbrush or if that doesnt happen bleach damage is often beyond repair.

Yoi have beautiful long hair, please dont risk it

Aposterhasnoname · 30/04/2020 14:52

I used to.

Till it went green two hours before a first date.

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 30/04/2020 14:59

i bleach my own hair all the time. it’s never gone orange or green or fallen out

i do dye it pink afterwards, but i bleach once every couple of months and had no problems. i would maybe be more cautious if i knew i was just keeping the blonde,
but the process itself has always been easy and trouble-free.

i use schwarzkopf in 00A - absolute platinum.

VenusClapTrap · 30/04/2020 15:04

I wouldn’t risk it. Too much potential for disaster. Your roots look fine.

Chochito · 30/04/2020 20:50

your hair looks really good!

Writersblock2 · 30/04/2020 21:06

I went platinum not long before lockdown and my roots are horrendous, but I’m rocking it until I can get back to the hairdresser. Not screwing it up, it took ages to get to platinum.

Franticbutterfly · 30/04/2020 23:10

Don't do it. Have you tried a root touch up or a dry shampoo with colour in?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 30/04/2020 23:17

I went for a bleached pixie cut three weeks before lockdown. My timing never was great. I think I'm probably going to clip it at the weekend. Won't risk yellow roots or breaks and it's short generally, so off it comes.

Goldrill · 30/04/2020 23:22

I do mine at home normally, but I have been doing it on and off for decades and I go for white blonde. My hair is really thick and very hard to damage!
I wouldn't attempt anything that needed any subtlety like yours does, op. If I'm aiming for white and it doesn't work, I just whack a second lot on and eventually it'll get there; it gets rid of patchiness etc. Don't think that would work for you!

princessTiasmum · 01/05/2020 11:56

I have always bleached my own hair, but i have done highlights rather than all over
I used Jerome Russell, best one i have found,
My hair has always turned out a nice light blonde,no need for any toner

lottieloop · 01/05/2020 14:08

I do my own balyage & I'm not a qualified hair dresser. I researched thoroughly what products to use & it turned out fab!

Although I wouldn't recommend bleaching yourself as it can turn out a nightmare if you don't know what you are doing.

I've always watched & took interest in how the hair salon did my previous highlights etc so I had a good idea what to do & which products to use.

I asked for advice on here regarding hair colouring & I was scoffed at by the hairdresser's ....

Sorry OP my post isn't really helpful but I'm just showing an example that it can be done even with no hairdressing experience 👏🏻

Would you bleach your own hair ?
lottieloop · 01/05/2020 14:16

OP I would probably say that if you are asking how to do your own highlights here I probably wouldn't do it Blush as bleach can go very wrong! And then you will be sorry you did it Blush

cosmo30 · 01/05/2020 14:24

I've had major bleach disasters over the years, and other times it's gone well! But my hair now won't grow past my shoulders as I've damaged it so much when younger which I really regret. I wouldn't dare do it now, and I've got baaaad roots, id rather wait for the hairdressers to reopen.
I think your hair looks great btw! Maybe sit in the sunshine when it comes back again Smile

leolion81 · 01/05/2020 14:33

Don't do it! I bought a bleach kit, how hard can it be I thought. I ended up with yellow roots, I had no toner so left purple shampoo on which left it yellow and purple. I'm now back to brunette Grin

AGoodPodcastAndANiceCupOfTea · 01/05/2020 14:46

Find Brad Mondo on fb and watch some of his videos to see just how badly bleaching at home can go!

kittensinspace · 01/05/2020 14:53

You could do a home highlighting kit pretty easily. They look bonkers, but the ones that come with the caps you can pull the hair through work great (just get a husband to help do the back). That's how I disguised my roots.

Glitterandunicorns · 01/05/2020 14:58

@agoodpodcastandanicecupoftea I've just discovered Brad Mondo and I'm obsessed with his videos!

@OP- I have a pastel blue pixie cut with the worst roots you've ever seen, so I feel your pain! In saying that, I can't recommend bleaching your own roots. Especially with lovely long hair.
